GBE Happenings 06.01.2022

Dear GBE Families,

June has arrived! With warmer temperatures and pools open, summer break is right around the corner. I want to recognize the amazing work of our testing team during the month of May. Administering the SOLs is an enormous feat and our staff rose to the occasion! Thank you to Mrs. Eley for all her hard work organizing all the details on top of her day-to-day responsibilities as our assistant principal!

We began our end of the school year events last Thursday with our Sixth Grade Chorus Concert! Our sixth graders did a great job performing in the gym! Thank you to all the families in attendance. Grade level celebrations, music performances, and sixth grade promotion make for such wonderful experiences for our students. We look forward to our Strings performance tonight and our Band performance on Thursday evening!

I will send an E-notify message to all sixth grade families next Wednesday on June 8th with additional details for our sixth grade promotion ceremony on June 9th. Please reach out to your homeroom teacher with any questions you may have. Each sixth grade family is allotted two seats for the in-person ceremony. Families requesting more than two seats need to send me an email at djpietzman@fcps.edu for approval. Thank you for your understanding as we manage the crowd size during this event. We are excited to recognize the achievements of our sixth graders!

We are at the end of another very challenging and exhausting school year. In addition to the ongoing updates to our Health and Safety protocols all school year, the recent gun violence has shaken our community and country. Our staff has the incredible responsibility of caring for your amazing children. We will continue to support our students as they process their emotions and we partner with each of you through this challenging time. Our collective care supported each of our 900 Roadrunners through last week and we will continue our dedication to your child’s well-being moving forward.

On Monday, we honored the members of the armed forces who have lost their lives serving in the military. Memorial Day provides time to remember and express our gratitude to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. We also extend our gratitude to the families and friends who have lost loved ones serving to protect the freedoms in our country.

We were thrilled to welcome back former GBE students graduating from Fairfax High School and Chantilly High School for their Grad Walks through our building. They received a warm welcome back from our students!  As our sixth graders transition to middle school, my hope is that they will return to GBE for their senior walk! I wish our sixth graders the best next school year. For those families moving over the summer, please know how much we loved meeting and supporting your family during your time at GBE.

Thank you for another wonderful school year. We look towards a bright future ahead in the upcoming school year! I can’t wait to see all of our returning Roadrunners and meet our new Roadrunners this fall! Have a wonderful summer break and thanks for being the best!
