Franklin Sherman Flash - June 13

FIELD DAY

Dear Franklin Sherman Families,

Thank you for a great school year.  These last few weeks have been a wonderful return to our community celebrations and culminating activities.  While we continued to face a few challenges, we persevered and came together as a community.  We appreciate all of your support and flexibility.

We'll be taking a summer break with the Flash.  Throughout the summer, we will send some updates to keep you posted as needed.  For now, mark your calendars for August 18th for our Open House.  Times and details will follow later this summer.

Finally, each year at this time we are faced with saying goodbye to a few of our community and staff members.  The following staff will not be returning to FSES for various reasons next year.  We wish them well and appreciate their many contributions to our school.

  • Cindy Merritt, Reading Specialist
  • Lindsay Lewis, Kindergarten
  • Brianna Shawhan, Third
  • Pauline Tran, Art
  • Dawn Adams, STEAM
  • Nikki Bohnert, Counselor
  • Jessica Pisani, Special Education
  • Martha Baier, Special Education

I look forward to introducing you to our new staff members later this summer.

Enjoy your summer break!

Sincerely,

Kathleen Quigley

Principal

SY 2022-23 School Supply Lists and Supply Kit Purchasing Information Posted

school supplies graphic

Get a head start on the 2022-23 school year by purchasing your child’s school supplies today!  Supply lists are posted on the Franklin Sherman ES website.

Ordering a supply kit from the PTA through local vendor, Campus Survival Kits, offers a number of great benefits:

  • The kits assemble all of the personal and community supplies our teachers have requested for each grade.
  • Don’t need everything offered in the full kit? You can choose to create your own kit and add items a la carte!
  • When ordering you have the flexibility to add headphones and/or laptop case to the kit.
    • Headphones - all grades must provide, should be wired, on-ear, mic. included and straight plug in jack (not elbow style)
    • Cases - grades 4-6 must provide, should be 11x15", cases issued by FSES (or another FCPS school) can be reused if they are still in good condition,  3-6 grade students should have brought them home from school at End of Year 2021-22
  • Low prices!
  • Kits will be delivered directly to Franklin Sherman prior to the first day of school so that you don't have to send them in with your child.
  • Personal supplies come in a custom Franklin Sherman drawstring backpack.
  • Each purchase benefits the school: the more we order, we earn free refills on select items in January.

More information and a link to purchase available on the PTA Website.  Cross school supplies off your list today! Orders must be placed by the end of July to ensure they are delivered to the school in mid-August. Late orders, including orders for new students during the school year, may not arrive by the first day of school, and the ordering site will indicate when and where you can expect your kit to arrive.

The best way to combat summer slide is by continuing to read over the break. From June 10 to August 12, Fairfax County Public Library is running a Summer Reading Challenge. Register for OCEANS OF POSSIBILITIES online or in person at your local branch and become eligible to win their raffle prize. In addition there are a host of various events happening there throughout the summer to keep you engaged. You will also find book recommendations for your age group from your favorite authors or preferred genres. Do not delay check out these resources and make summer fun!

Also check out this fun Summer Activity Board from Mrs. Essimi our Franklin Sherman Librarian.  Mark off as many of the activities as you can, submit your work, and be entered in grade-level drawings.

School Health Services Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians and school staff members who interact with the school health rooms. This may include principals, school counselors, and main office staff members. The survey has been approved for distribution by the FCPS’ Internal Survey Advisory Committee.

Electronic versions of the survey forms may be accessed at:

School Health Services Survey – STAFF 2022: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KDDYRW3 approval #21230

School staff and community responses to this short survey are due Friday, June 10, 2022.

Bullying Prevention and Intervention Information Video Posted

FCPSlogo

The FCPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention public website has been updated to include a parent video.  The video educates parents on what bullying is, per the SR&R, and what they can expect when a bullying allegation is reported to a school administrator.  The Student Safety and Wellness Office is available to collaborate with school counselors to provide virtual or in-person parent presentations at the request of schools.  The video is available at the link below.

Do Your Part - VaxUP!

vax up

FCPS has seen an increase in COVID-19 cases recently as the county has transitioned to the medium community level. Schools continue to apply layered prevention strategies to maintain a healthy work and learning environment. However, each of us has a responsibility to do our part to help keep ourselves, our students, and our colleagues safe.

Easy ways to “Do Your Part” include: staying up to date on vaccinations and boosters, considering when and where to choose to mask up, practicing good hygiene, and monitoring symptoms daily.

A single booster dose is now authorized for children ages 5-11, at least five months after completing a primary series with the Pfizer vaccine. Learn more about scheduling a COVID-19 vaccine appointment or find a walk-in option on the Fairfax County Health Department’s website.

2022-23 Planning

Help us get an accurate estimate  student enrollment for next school year.  Enrollment can be difficult to predict and having an estimate that is as accurate as possible is important for many reasons including student teacher ratio and budget allocation.  Tell us about the enrollment intention of your child today by filling out this form and emailing it to our Registrar, Ann Rajabi.

All families should submit this form including those who will remain enrolled at Franklin Sherman and families with 6th Grade students who will be moving on to middle school.

Virtual Book Fair

The Virtual Book Fair will remain open till the end of the school year.  Purchases benefit our FSES library.  Be sure to check out our teacher wish lists. What better way to thank your child's classroom teacher than with a book or two from her/his wish list. You may also purchase books or make a money donation to Homestretch, serving parents and children experiencing homelessness at this time in our community.
