Families Needed to Host French High School Students from July 6 to 29!

French and American Flags

Give the experience of an American summer to a French teen by becoming a host with Compass USA!. Host families are urgently needed. Fifteen French high school students dream of coming to Washington, D.C. and hope to discover the American way of life, integrate into the community, meet new friends and improve their English. They will arrive at Dulles International Airport on July 6 for this three-week program.

As a host family, all you need is a spare bed, to provide three meals a day, and a willingness to welcome a student into the normal rhythm and activities of your home. Compass USA will provide sightseeing trips on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the French students and any interested host siblings. If your family has planned a vacation for July, your student can travel with you.

Visit https://www.compass-usa.net for more information about the summer homestay program and hosting. If you are interested in hosting one of these students, please contact WTW parent, Kathleen DeCarlo, at kdecarlo@verizon.net or 703-388-6525.

Current 10th Grade Parents & Guardians - ACTION REQUIRED IN NAVIANCE

Each year, your child develops an Academic and Career Plan that supports their  growth. This plan helps your child plan for their future.

Your child will work with teachers and school counselors to discover their personal strengths and interests. They will also create goals to help them achieve success, plan  for courses that meet high school graduation requirements, and prepare for life after  high school. The development of this plan starts in middle school. Students update it during high school as their goals evolve.

This plan connects to the Fairfax County Public Schools’ Strategic Plan. It supports the  growth of Portrait of a Graduate attributes and is required by the Virginia Department of  Education. Each student’s parent or guardian must review this plan at the end of 8th  grade and again at the end of 10th grade. Then you can coach them to make decisions  about college and careers that match their personal strengths, interests, and goals.  There are many pathways to success!

You or your child can log into Naviance Student at www.fcps.edu/Naviance, then review the following information together:

  • Results of the strengths and career surveys
  • Personal, academic, and/or career goals
  • Resume
  • Draft course plans for high school

Once in your child’s account, click the “About Me” tab and scroll down to “Portfolio.”  Once you click on the Portfolio, you can view all the work that your child has completed.

Once you have reviewed your child’s plan, complete the verification form at  https://forms.gle/jifN6F3DE9kiNUuX7 . The completion of this form will serve as your signature. Please complete this form by Thursday, June 30, 2022.

For more information about your child’s plans, visit www.FCPS.edu and search  “Academic and Career Plan.” We encourage you to continue to use Naviance Student  with your child to explore college and career options.

If you have questions, please contact your student’s school counselor.

Underclass Students - Will You Be Returning to Woodson Next Year?

If you will not be attending Woodson HS this fall, please let Woodson Student Services know now. Please click here and fill out this form. This form was also mailed home with course requests for next year.

If your student intends to attend Woodson next year, there is no need to complete or return the form.

Student Services will make sure all transcripts and records are forwarded to your child’s new school so his/her file is complete.  If you have any questions, please contact Woodson registrar Casey Delaney at 703-503-4622 or cdelaney@fcps.edu.

Congratulations to Boys Tennis!  Occoquan Region Champions!

Sports Highlights

Baseball

Woodson opened play in the Occoquan Region Tournament with an 11-1 victory over the visiting Edison Eagles. Senior pitcher Connor Krahulec led the Cavaliers with a complete game, allowing only three hits and one unearned run over five innings. He helped his own cause with a double and an RBI single.

Woodson took the lead in the 2nd inning and never looked back. Consecutive singles from Jay Sorkin, Andrew Perks, and Krahulec powered the Cavs to a 4-0 lead. Woodson completed the rout with six runs in the 5th, which saw a litany of errors by the visitors.

As its reward for the opening round win, Woodson squared off against the National District Champion Hayfield. The Hawks entered the game at 19-2, fresh off a 12 inning 4-3 victory over Fairfax. Hayfield’s top two pitchers were unavailable after being used in the marathon game. Woodson sent Ben Smallwood to the mound, hoping he could keep their season alive.

The game started with two scoreless innings. Woodson drew first blood in the 3rd.  Smallwood opened the inning with a double to center. Courtesy runner Owen Clarke stole 3rd and scored on an RBI grounder by Colin Jones.  Hayfield struck back in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 2-1 lead off two hits and some aggressive base running, which induced a throwing error by the Cavs infield.

Woodson rallied in the 4th. Andrew Perks reached on an error. Dillon Brody singled through the middle. Smallwood loaded the bases with a bloop single to left. Ethan Conklin drew a four pitch walk to score Perks. Jones then fought off several tough pitches and put Woodson back in front with an RBI walk. The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the 4th when Senior Ryan Banya singled, stole 2B, moved to 3B on an infield hit, then scored on another throwing error. The score held at 3-3 through a quiet 5th inning.

The Cavs broke through in the top of the 6th, when Brody singled, then scored on Smallwood’s second double of the game. Conklin hit an RBI single to center, followed by another walk from JonesConklin was caught stealing 3B, but Jones scored on a double by Colton Lennon to push the lead to 6-3.

Hayfield clawed back one run in the bottom of the inning when Banya hit an RBI double, but Smallwood pitched out of trouble and Woodson took a 6-4 lead to the last inning. Woodson threatened, putting two on with two outs, but couldn’t extend its lead.  Smallwood got two quick outs, but a single brought the tying run to the plate with two outs.  At his maximum pitch count, Smallwood got the last out with a fly ball to center fielder Brody.  Woodson advances to face West Springfield tonight at 7pm.

Softball Team

Softball

A pair of Regional playoff victories last week catapulted the Woodson Softball team into the Regional Semifinals this Wednesday night at 6:30pm at Robinson.

The Cavaliers started the week with an opening round home victory over Justice HS, 11-0. That was followed by a road win against the National District number 1 seed Edison HS, 8-5.

Against Justice, the bats came alive quickly, plating 6 runs in the first inning.  Junior Sarah Banker led off with a single to right field. That was followed by consecutive RBI doubles from Sophomore Sydney Huffman and Junior Elizabeth Schneider, making the score 2-0 after 3 batters.  A couple of batters later, outfield RBI singles from Senior Veronica Udowitz and Freshman Penny Elliott pushed the score to 4-0.  Senior Jaeden Petrella’s single to center field brought in 2 more, closing out the inning with 6 runs.

Later in the game, hits by Banker, Senior Zoe Johnson and Sophomore Ceci Temple also drove in a run each.

Three Woodson pitchers powered the Cavaliers in the shutout, Sophomore Claire Warden, Udowitz, and Temple.

Against Edison, Woodson broke a scoreless game in the top of the 3rd when Senior Jaeden Petrella stole home after earning a walk and Sophomore Sydney Huffman reached base on an Edison error. Junior Elizabeth Schneider followed with a double to right field, bringing in Huffman. Clean-up batter Sophomore Sedona Adams’ line drive to center brought in another run, making the score 3-0. Two innings later, Senior Zoe Johnson hit a 2-run homer to left center, making the score 7-1.  After Edison scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 5rth inning, making the score 7-5, speedy Huffman’s bunt single turned into a run, after a 3-base throwing error by the Edison pitcher found the ball sailing into the right field corner, making the score 8-5.

Winning pitcher Sophomore Claire Warden closed the door, not allowing any runs in the final 2 innings, preserving Woodson’s lead. Warden also struck out 3 batters in the complete game performance.

Watch the mail for these reports by the end of the indicated month:

Other scores come from the school or testing organization. These include Advanced Placement (AP) scores accessed through students’ College Board accounts.
