CWES Weekly Happenings

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families,

The tragedy at Robb Elementary shook our community to its core last week. So close to the end of an exhausting school year, CWES staff was devastatingly reminded that student safety is our top priority -- that we are entrusted with the very lives of your babies every day you send them through our doors. Our staff showed up for our students -- helped them process their emotions and restore their sense of wellbeing -- despite their own heartbreak and fear. I couldn't be prouder of their professionalism and care for our students in the wake of this tragedy.

We know you entrust us with your children's health as well. We have had several outbreaks (defined as three or more cases in the same class), and, under the direction of the Fairfax County Health Department, we are now sending individual COVID test kits home to classes with outbreaks. Given the outbreaks, the Health Department has directed us to continue with outbreak communications and discontinue daily case notifications. Please know, however, that we continue to see new cases each day and we will maintain our mitigation strategies through the end of the school year. When grade levels share culminating events (such as Kindergarten Zoo Exhibits or Third Grade Cities), classes limit visits to 15 minutes each to avoid close contact.

Today is Memorial Day -- a day we honor the members of the armed forces who died while serving in the military. This solemn day and every day we express our gratitude to those families who have paid the ultimate price for our country.

Hug your babies tight this week. We will continue giving them our best as we embrace both the bitter and the sweet the end of the school year brings.

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, Dr. L

Woodson Instrument Petting Zoo, Wed. June 8 at 7PM

Woodson HS is hosting an instrument petting zoo on Wednesday, June 8 from 7-8 PM for all elementary feeder schools. If your child is currently in third through fifth grade, this is a great opportunity to try out various band and strings instruments they might want to study next year.

Keep in mind that strings instruction begins in fourth grade; band instruction begins in fifth grade. We hope you take advantage of this great opportunity!

Woodson Relay for Life

Come out and have fun while supporting an important cause! Come to Woodson's Relay for Life at the Pat Cunningham stadium at WT Woodson High School on Saturday, June 4th from 12 pm to 12 am (anyone may come or leave at any time!) Here is our event website on the American Cancer Society!

We plan to have live music, games, challenges, and of course, the luminaria ceremony to remember those we have lost to cancer. We think this is a great opportunity for students from our feeder schools and other members of the community to get involved with: to fundraise for a great cause, interact with students, experience Woodson's clubs, and just have fun!

SPECIAL OF THE MONTH: Library

What an amazing year we have had in the library! Thank you for supporting our book fair in April, our first in person one since the fall of 2019. It was wonderful to see the students so excited about books.

Book fair helps support the school and the library. In the spring of 2020 we purchased a variety of STEAM materials using book fair funds. This year we have been able to use those items while in the library to collaborate with classmates and create amazing things. Below are a few pictures of the students engaging with the STEAM items.

It is also the time of the year when all library books are due. I will be sending emails beginning next week to remind the students if they have library books out.

Thank you for a wonderful year!
