Halley ES Hornet Happenings - May 27, 2022

HORNET HAPPENNINGS

May 27, 2022

Happy Weekend 05.27.22

Dear Halley Families,

At about 11:45 am, we received an alert that our area was under a Tornado Warning. We moved into Tornado Protocols at that time.

After we received clearance that the warning was lifted, we returned to normal school operations.

We are very proud of our students and staff members for the excellent way in which they handled this situation. As always, the students' safety is our most important responsibility.  Please understand that during a Tornado Protocol, we are not able to safely manage visitors or access the doors to allow for entry.  We encourage all families to shelter and stay safe rather than come to the school.

Thank you for your support and assistance. Please do not hesitate to call the school at 703-551-5700 if you have any questions or concerns.

Have a wonderful extended holiday weekend!

Mrs. Peerman, Mrs. Johnson-Tyler, and Mrs. Zamora

Student Laptop Collection

All Halley ES student laptops must be collected prior to the end of the school year.

We are collecting laptops on June 6th for 6th graders and June 8th for K – 6.

Students will also need to bring back their power cord and the computer sleeve/case if they were issued one.  The cost of a lost power cord replacement is $23.  Please expect to reimburse the school through My School Bucks rather than buy your own replacement for safety reasons.  You can access that resource at this link:

  https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/getmain?requestAction=home.

Students attending FCPS Summer Programs also need to be sure their laptops are at school by June 1 so they can receive any necessary updates or replacements. They will be expected to return their laptops and power cords to Halley Elementary School when their program ends.

Email Jennifer Buchko JMBuchko@fcps.edu for any additional information or with questions.

Memorial Day 05.27.22

All FCPS schools and offices will be closed Monday, May 30th, in observance of Memorial Day.

6th Grade Promotion

Please join us in celebrating as we send our 6th graders off to middle school!

Each 6th grader has been issued 2 tickets for the ceremony, which will be distributed to each sixth grader on Monday, June 6th. To maintain social distancing during the event, families are limited to 2 guests per 6th grader. There will be no exceptions to this limit.  Tickets will be required for guest admittance.

6th Grade Promotion

After the grade level promotion ceremony, each classroom will present awards.

We are excited and look forward to this event!

Tutor.com - Online Tutoring Services Summer 2022 Access

FCPS students will continue to have unlimited access to 24/7, on-demand, online tutoring support services through Tutor.com during the summer of 2022.  Students are able to use Tutor.com during the summer to review and/or practice in subject areas of interest or need.

Students may also choose to access other tools/services such as practice quizzes in a variety of subject areas, as well as self-paced study courses for SAT/ACT preparation.

Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has new tools to help parents and guardians know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided by Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, at no cost to families. You may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited.

If you want more detailed information, sign up for the Internet Use Parent portal and log-in anytime to see more detail about your child’s browsing and “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours. Find out more and sign up for these services on our website.

FCPS School Board Approves SY 22-23 Calendar

2022-2023 FCPS School Year Calendar 05.27.22

The 2022-23 school year calendar was approved at the January 27 School Board Meeting. This calendar focuses on instruction, and student and operational needs. The calendar is aligned with neighboring school districts and adds additional key observance days.

Most importantly, this calendar was developed with significant input from the FCPS community. Thank you to everyone who participated in the process through surveys, webinars, and participation in the feedback committee. This effort reflects the best effort of everyone the school calendar touches.

To find out more about next year’s school calendar, visit the FCPS website.

FCPS' Family Return to School

Survey Is Coming Soon

Now that FCPS has transitioned back to a more typical school experience, the school division is interested in hearing from parents/caregivers about how the school year has gone for their students. You will have an opportunity to provide your feedback on our Family Return to School Survey which will open Tuesday, May 31, and close Friday, June 10.

The survey is being administered by the FCPS Office of Research and Strategic Improvement, which provides objective research and data-based information back to the school division’s leadership. The survey is part of the office’s continuing evaluation of the pandemic’s impact on our school division.

We encourage all FCPS parents/caregivers to respond to the survey and share their experiences whether positive or negative. The information you and other families provide will be used, along with other data, to inform FCPS leadership about the return to five days a week of in-person instruction, and support FCPS’ efforts to make improvements that support schools, students, and staff. It will also be included in ESSER III reporting.
