A Message to Our Families
Spartan Community,
I want to take a moment to acknowledge the recent acts of violence committed across our nation in Buffalo, NY, in Uvalde, TX, and closer to home in the City of Alexandria. We are all struggling to find the right words, partly because we all want to imagine a world where tragedies like this won't happen; but mostly because these senseless acts have a common thread – they all involved children. I share in your grief, fear, and frustration. These events impact us all in personal ways.
One thing we all have in common is our condemnation of these senseless acts of violence. Another thing we have in common is our commitment to keeping our schools, and the students and employees safe. At West Springfield High School, we remain vigilant in maintaining a safe space for our students to learn and grow. In today's environment, we are reminded of the importance of safety and security measures in our schools. In that regard, we continue to practice day-to-day safety and security measures. We continue to remind students about the importance of reporting to their teachers and administrators when they hear of planned violence or disrupting activities that have the potential to impact other students and our school. We continue to respond swiftly to any concern or possible event.
Lastly, we also know that our students need care, support, and understanding as they learn about acts of gun violence. We have that support in place and encourage everyone to use them. This helpful resource provided by The National Association of Psychologists can be used to help guide your discussion with your children. Our Student Services Department is also available if you find your child in need of additional support.
As with other challenges we have faced, we will work through this together. We stand together, as the Spartan community and in solidarity with the families of those who have lost loved ones over these past two weeks.

MEMORIAL DAY Weekend: Honoring our Fallen
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May. Since the late 1950s, on the Thursday before Memorial Day, the 1,200 soldiers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry place small American flags at each of the more than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery. They then patrol 24 hours a day during the weekend to ensure that each flag remains standing.
Red poppy flowers are also often placed on crosses near the graves of fallen war heroes. The tradition of the poppy comes from the poem, 'In Flanders Field', written in May 1915 by John McCrae after the Second Battle of Ypres. The poppy, which bloomed in battlefields during the first world war in Belgium and France, has become a symbol of remembrance and is a key element of the Remembrance Day observations in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Since 2001, the 'National Moment of Remembrance Act' has defined 3pm local time on Memorial Day as the National Moment of Remembrance. A number of organizations throughout the country observe this moment, including Amtrak, whose trains blast their whistles, Major League Baseball and NASCAR.
Each year, the President requests that all governors of the United States direct the flag to be flown at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day on all buildings, grounds and naval vessels. U.S. citizens are also asked to display the flag at half-staff from their homes before noon.
More than 645,000 have lost their lives in service to our country since World War I. Today, more than 100 years since the end of the war, we have a profound opportunity to remember their ultimate sacrifice with a moment of silence, a reverent act or a thoughtful gesture of thanks. We encourage you to pay tribute to our nation's fallen this weekend.

Parking Enforcement
Student, staff and visitor parking policies will be enforced until the last day of school. Drivers must have a parking pass displayed in their car windshield unless parked in a visitors spot. We appreciate everyone's compliance.

About the Survey
The Virginia Young Adult Survey (YAS) is a statewide survey that will collect data at a local level. Obtaining local data is vital to understanding behavioral health trends and needs across Virginia’s communities. These data can support prevention planning to help meet local needs and target strategies more effectively.
The Young Adult Survey is completely anonymous and will be open for participation from February to June 30, 2022. We anticipate the 30-question survey will take you approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.
