From The Principal

Family,

I hope that this message finds each of you enjoying a restful Memorial Day weekend.  I want to again thank you for sharing and trusting your students with us.  This week has been another pretty good week of celebrations and achievements across the school.  It is so much fun to have the opportunity to see our students in their element.

We began the week picking up where we left off the previous week being able to celebrate our Fine Arts students with the viewing of the Art Show.  If you didn't get a chance to come out and see the outstanding work our students put together, you truly missed out on a treat.  We have some real talent walking our halls.  We all should be proud of these sometimes hidden gems.

On Monday, I was able to enjoy some time with our Leadership students as our Senior students were recognized and celebrated during the Senior  Sendoff Ceremony.  It was nice to hear our student body president, Zion Nuby share sincere words of encouragement with his peers and then to hear from each of the Seniors as they shared their destinations and areas of academic focus for next year.  I was both touched and inspired by their words as well as the ceremony itself.

We were able to recognize a number of our students who will be taking their athletic talents to the next level.  We gathered in the gym on Wednesday for the Senior College Signing Ceremony.  Over 25 athletes will be representing South County as freshmen on their field of choice and I know they will excel at their respective schools just as they have with us!

Throughout the week we were treated to performances by our Orchestra and Choral students.  Both of these evenings were amazing.  What's even better is that we have the opportunity to enjoy the majority of them again next year.  We are rich with talent and these students are only going to become better at their crafts.  If you were able to get out to either or both of these concerts, you walked away filled with joy because these performers performed their hearts out on that stage!

And we rounded out the week with celebrations of our underclassmen students at the Underclassmen Academic Awards Ceremony.  We were treated to an memorable speech by Kyra Charters who shared with us the experiences of the last few years from the student perspective.  Ms. Charters not only spoke about the challenges, but also the grit and determination our students have displayed throughout the pandemic.  We then went on to award medals to over 40 students for the noteworthy achievements they have made over the course of the year.

Finally, we can add our student athlete achievements in the post season.  Our track team won regionals, our softball and women's soccer teams continue to advance as well.  And our crew team capped off the best season in South County Crew history with four boats finishing in the top 20 in the country.  (Read more here.)

As we close the year out, we are experiencing an uptick in behavior that is less than desirable.  We have had the classic Senior Pranks that we come to expect.  We worked through those and have moved on.  But we are seeing things like extended hallway wandering, increases in students finding themselves outside of the building unauthorized, ordering of food and having it delivered to school, the propping of doors to allow students who leave campus access back into the building.  As an administrative and security team, we are spending a lot of time chasing down these types of issues that ultimately create voids in our ability to keep our building as safe and secure as it should be.  In light of the recent violent tragedies, we all should have a heightened sense of awareness and need for a secure campus.  I am asking for continued conversations with your children around these types of issues so that we can finish the year without incident.  I know that it may sound a bit over the top being that everyone knows how antsy we all can get at the end of the year.  However, I want you to know that our staff and some of our students are truly feeling the pressure of a long year, and adding a lack of a secure building can put people over the edge.  So please help me out with this.  I would truly appreciate the conversations taking place.

As always, I am thankful for having been able to serve you and your children in this capacity.  I have been fortunate to work with a community that is as supportive as you have been.  You are an unmatched group of Family and I know I won't be able to find you anywhere else.  Enjoy the remainder of this holiday weekend and I will chat with you all next week!  #OneStallion
