School-wide Student Conversation about Race and Dignity

Dear Families,

I informed you recently of an incident that occurred at our school that involved discriminatory and racialized speech directed at one of our students.  We have taken this incident very seriously and will continue to have both short term and long term actions. The steps that we have taken to date are as follows:

1.  Community notification

2.  Support for the victim(s)

3.  Serious disciplinary consequences for offenders and meetings with each family.

4.  Consultation with the Assistant Superintendent for Equity, the Region 4 Office, and the Equity Specialist

5.  Staff meeting communication and expectations for supervision, accountability, and reporting on specific behaviors

6.  Every student will be participating in a lesson and conversation on the topic of discriminatory harassment including learning more specific examples of the types of incidents that have occurred that are unacceptable. This lesson will also define ‘dignity’ as the inherent value and worth of every person, urge students towards honoring the dignity of every person in our community, and speak up when they see anyone’s dignity being violated.

Rising 9th Grade Summer Program

Centreville High School is excited to offer our wildCat Connections orientation program to rising 9th grade students this summer.  This is an optional program designed and taught by Centreville High School staff members and student leaders to provide students with an opportunity to explore the building, meet classmates, and participate in interactive team building activities to help with a successful transition to high school.

The program will be held at Centreville High School on August 4 and August 9.  The time of the program will be 9:00 AM - 2:45 PM each day.  Students can choose one day to attend based on your availability.  We will have lunch available in the cafeteria, or students may bring their lunch.

Students should sign up for either August 4 or August 9 as the programming is the same for both dates.

Registration:

  • Register by June 25th to allow for proper planning

Transportation:

  • We are planning for bus transportation to be available from local elementary pick-up sites, and we will provide more bus details at a later date.

We look forward to meeting your child this summer.  We are confident that your student’s experience in the wildCat Connections program will help lead to a positive and successful start to the freshman school year.

There will also be a 9th grade orientation during the week of August 15th where students will follow their class schedule and meet their teachers.  More details about this event and the final date will be provided later this spring.

If you have any questions regarding the program, please contact assistant principal, Sarah Lutes, stlutes@fcps.edu

8th Grade Parents: Signature required for Academic & Career Plan

Your child is continuing to develop an Academic and Career Plan (ACP) that supports their current work as well as helps them plan for the future.

Liberty counselors met with 8th grade students during the last week of April to assist them in reviewing the requirements for graduation and mapping out their required courses and electives through 12th grade.

The development of the ACP starts in middle school and is updated regularly through high school as each student’s academic, personal, and career goals evolve. Please have your child log into his or her Academic and Career Plan in Naviance and, with your child, review the draft course plan for high school.  If you have a Blackboard Parent View account, you can log into your account, and together you and your child can view his or her plan. Once in the Naviance Student account, click on “Courses” and then “My Course Plans”.

The Virginia Department of Education requires that the student’s parent or guardian review this plan. Once you have reviewed your child’s plan, use this Google form to complete the verification form. The completion of this form will serve as your signature.  This must be completed by Friday, May 27, 2022.

For more information about your child’s ACP, visit the FCPS website. We encourage you to continue to use Naviance Student with your child as you both explore college and career options. If you have further questions, please contact your child’s school counselor.
