Weekly Message

We share in your grief, fear, and frustration about the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday. These events impact us all in personal ways. One thing we all have in common is our condemnation of these senseless acts of violence.

Another thing we have in common is our commitment to keeping our schools, and the students and employees within them, safe. FCPS and Oakton ES work to make critical safety upgrades to our buildings, plan and practice day-to-day safety and security measures, and respond swiftly to any concern or possible event.

Your child may have questions and concerns after learning about this tragic news. The National Association of School Psychologists has a helpful resource (in multiple languages) for families and educators to support them when talking with students about school violence. If you or your child need additional support, please reach out to our clinical team.

We stand together, as the Oakton community and in solidarity with the Robb Elementary School community.

6th Grade Basketball vs. Waples Mill

Thank you to our PTA, 6th grade parents, OHS students, and 6th grade staff for making this special event a reality!  6th grade students had fun playing, cheering, selling their goods, and enjoying great food.  It was a fantastic event for all!

kindness

These past few months have been busy! Students have been working hard with Mrs. Schnaue and Mrs. Theberge on the topics of Empathy and Friendship and what that looks, sounds and feels like. Some lessons included an escape room, others a movement lesson, and in 6th grade we focused on our last transition lesson as they head off to middle school. Ask your child why empathy is important in a friendship and what it takes to show empathy!

We will be ending the year focusing on kindness!  We are challenging the whole school to show kindness and complete a scavenger hunt by next Friday, June 3. The scavenger hunt forms will be passed out at school. Any student who completes the kindness scavenger hunt and turns it in to their school counselor by the 3rd will get a prize! We encourage families to do some of these together ❤

End of the Year Celebrations

As you are aware, OES, as well as many schools in the district, are experiencing high levels of COVID cases.  We are trying to balance our efforts to reduce of spread of cases with the need for our students to experience the joys of school events.

We feel it is important to continue with our planned end of year activities and are asking for your help to do all we can to keep everyone healthy.  Please continue to keep children home who are not feeling well.

This coming week, we will be holding our Chorus Concert on Wednesday, June 1 at 7:00PM and our Strings Concert on Thursday, June 2, at 7:00PM.  While we want all of our chorus and strings students to participate, we understand if parents would like to opt their child out of this performance due to the COVID increase. Student grades will not be affected by opting-out of a performance.

We are looking forward to celebrating these important milestones and thank you all for your careful considerations.

INCREASE IN COVID CASES

FCPS has seen an increase in COVID-19 cases recently, especially at the elementary level, as the county has transitioned to the medium community level. Schools continue to apply layered prevention strategies to maintain a healthy work and learning environment. However, each of us has a responsibility to do our part to help keep our students safe. As we enter the final weeks of the school year, we must stay vigilant so we can all enjoy the events and milestones ahead and be ready for a relaxing and healthy summer.

Easy ways to “Do Your Part” include: staying up to date on vaccinations and boosters, considering when and where to choose to mask up, practicing good hygiene, and monitoring symptoms daily.

It is increasingly important to stay home if you feel unwell and testing is a critical strategy to slow transmission. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for information about COVID testing and testing sites. At-home testing is also a good option. Every home in the U.S. is eligible to order a third round of free at-home COVID tests; visit COVID.gov for details.

Laptop Returns

Student laptop collection will begin Tuesday, May 31. In preparation, please make sure the school laptop and charger is clean. Remove any personal stickers and the residue they leave behind. Please turn in the FCPSON issued charger with your laptop. Wrap your power adapters neatly and plug them into your laptops.

If you are missing your FCPSON issued power adapter, replacements may be purchased via MySchoolBucks
