This week we focused on love and joy. Our students' smiles say it all!
Bucknell families,
This has been a hard week in education as we grieve the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday. These events impact us all in very personal ways. One thing we all have in common is our condemnation of these senseless acts of violence.
At Bucknell this week, we made the choice to focus on love and the positive relationships that we have established with students since the beginning of the school year. Our staff modeled love in the ways that they embraced each student, nurtured each student, and taught each student. From read alouds in classrooms to clubs after school - our focus was on communicating to students that we see them, we value them, and we're honored to be in their lives.
In addition to love, we focused on joy! Our 1st grade students enjoyed authentic learning in our new garden and 3rd grade students engaged in similar learning during their field trip to Green Springs Garden! Our students can't stop smiling and that brings us joy.
As you go into the long weekend, take the time to hug your children a little tighter, make them giggle, and enjoy their smiles. There is no school on Monday, May 30th because of Memorial Day. We will see you on Tuesday, May 31st as we gear up for our last two weeks of school.
Sincerely,
Rashida Green, Principal
Tory Swanson, Assistant Principal

Do Your Part! Vax Up!

FCPS has seen an increase in COVID-19 cases recently as the county has transitioned to the medium community level. Schools continue to apply layered prevention strategies to maintain a healthy work and learning environment. However, each of us has a responsibility to do our part to help keep ourselves, our students, and our colleagues safe.
Easy ways to “Do Your Part” include: staying up to date on vaccinations and boosters, considering when and where to choose to mask up, practicing good hygiene, and monitoring symptoms daily.
A single booster dose is now authorized for children ages 5-11, at least five months after completing a primary series with the Pfizer vaccine. Learn more about scheduling a COVID-19 vaccine appointment or find a walk-in option on the Fairfax County Health Department’s website.
Do you have a child at home who will be five by September 30th? Please start your registration now. If you have any neighbors with little ones, please send this information to them as well. These are the 5 steps you need to take to register your child. If you have questions regarding kindergarten registration, please reach out to Ms. Bowles or call our main office at (703) 660-2900.
We have missed seeing you in our cafeteria with students during the school day! We would love to have volunteers come and join us during lunch. This is a great opportunity to build relationships with students at Bucknell Elementary, while also seeing your child during the school day. In addition, you will be supporting our cafeteria host and head custodian. You will ensure that students stay in their designated seats while at lunch and that they’re being safe.
If you’re interested in supporting Bucknell by being a volunteer in the cafeteria, please click the link below and sign up for a time slot!

Absences and late arrivals should be reported to the office as classes start promptly at 8:55 a.m.
Bucknell ES front doors open at 8:45 and closes at 8:55AM. A child who arrives to school after 8:55 a.m. is considered tardy. If you know ahead of time that your child is going to be late or absent for the entire day, please call the school attendance line (703-660-2929) before 8:55 a.m. If the school does not receive a call from the family, the absence/tardy will automatically be considered unexcused.
Please call before 3:10 p.m. if you plan to pick up your child early from school. It is imperative that the front office staff has enough time to get the students from their classroom before dismissal begins. It is also helpful if you email your child's teacher so they are aware and able to get the student ready for an early dismissal.
