1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Hello Woodson Families:

As we close out May, I reflect on so many events in the world and within our own country. I hope this extended weekend brings quality time with your families. Hold your kids tight, listen and hear their hearts. If you have any concerns or need any assistance with your child, please reach out to their counselor.

As a reminder, each school in FCPS has a security presence for the safety of our community, students and staff.  At Woodson, this includes but is not limited to: locked interior and exterior doors, electronic door access, CCTV, visitor management system, practicing of lockdown, fire and tornado drills, county-wide emergency management planning, school security based in the school and throughout the county, division-wide and school specific crisis management plans updated annually, threat assessment procedures, confidential tip email/text, employee training in crisis management and communication, an SRO (Officer Smith), and sensitivity training for responders to match the needs of our students. Finally, last night the school board approved funding to add vestibules to all schools to allow entry to the school prior to gaining entry into the office while maintaining a welcoming, supportive and nurturing environment in our schools.

Tuesday we celebrate the Class of 2022!  This milestone is thirteen years in the making for our seniors! I invite anyone to come to EagleBank Arena at George Mason University. Graduation is on Tuesday, May 31st at 2PM and there are no tickets required. Grades 9-11, please make sure you review the schedule for May 31 as it is very different from any other day of the year.

If you are looking for something to do this weekend, Viva Vienna is going on just up the road. It is a fun, family friendly, outdoor event.

With only nine days of school year remaining, please check SIS to see where your child stands in classes. Be sure to get remaining work in and check with teachers if you have any questions.

Have a wonderful, safe, long weekend,

Dr. Floyd

10. Medication Pickup

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than dismissal time on Friday, June 10th. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded.

It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian, however, with parent or guardian written permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the health room.

If you would like to donate your child’s Epi pens or Inhaler please send an email to the Health Room stating you would like to donate to the Fairfax County Health Department at the end of the school year.  Please note that they can only take Epi pens that have 3 months or more remaining before expiration.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school.

If your child will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, your existing long-term medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s). Your cooperation will ensure that we can safely give your student his or her medication. If you have any questions, please contact your School Health Aide, Celeste Delahunty at 703-503-4610 , or your school Public Health Nurse, Amanda Yanchus, RN, BSN, at 703-503-4691 . Thank you for your cooperation and have a great summer.

If you would like to volunteer please feel free to complete the volunteer registration here. If you are willing and able to donate your time, it is greatly appreciated. If not, and you know of some others that would be able to assist us, please feel free to spread the word!

15. Woodson Sports Physical Night

It is that time of the year again! The W.T. Woodson Athletic Training Program’s Sports Physical Night event will be held this year on June 8 @ W.T. Woodson High School. As always, the goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the 2022-23 School Year. Each year, it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. The price will be $50 as it has been in previous years. Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s ONLY fundraiser for the year as we DO NOT receive any funding from the county. ALL proceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. Appointment times will be available at 5:30, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30pm.
Register for an appointment here!

If you cannot make it to our night on the 8th, but still want to support FCPS, feel free to sign up for another school's event! (Promise we won't be mad).

If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at chogge@fcps.edu .
