Virginia Run Families,

The events at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas have been impactful for our nation. Our hearts and thoughts go out to those who are impacted, directly or indirectly. During these challenging times, I take comfort in knowing that we have the right staff in place to support our students and families.

Safety of our school is the highest priority. FCPS has focused a great deal of attention to emergency procedures, and is vigilant about protecting the safety of its students and employees. The school division has spent considerable time and effort in planning and practicing day to day safety and security measures, as well as addressing response to a major critical incident. Among these measures are:

  • Physical Security (Locked doors, intrusion alarms, electronic door access, CCTV)
  • Visitor Management System and Procedures (Deployed system wide)
  • Emergency planning coordination with police, fire, and emergency management offices
  • Comprehensive division-wide crisis management plan
  • Individual school crisis plans-updated annually
  • Lockdown, Fire, and Tornado Drills
  • Safety training and Table Top exercises at all schools
  • Critical incident terms awareness and training (Lockdown, Secure the Building, Shelter in Place, Stay Put Stay Tuned)
  • Threat assessment process
  • Confidential tip, text, and email programs
  • Uniformed school security patrols (24x7)
  • Employee training in crisis management and communication. (Lockdown, Evacuation, and “Run, Hide, Fight”)
  • Mandatory annual safety training for all students and staff
  • Systemwide emergency alert systems

Today, we know students may have questions and concerns. Our clinical support team and administrators are ready and available to provide support to students, staff, and families. We will not be introducing information that you might have intentionally sheltered them from. We will be ready to respond to questions and fears and reinforce ways that we keep safe at school.

At Virginia Run, we will continue to respond with relentless love for all. As educators, we will continue to teach our students and model with our actions. We will always be a safe place for students and staff to learn and grow.  As we teach our students to think critically, we will continue to teach them the importance of kindness, compassion, and empathy.

If you or your child need specific supports, please call the office to speak with a clinical team member (listed below) or an administrator.

Counselors - Jenna DeKeuster, Madina Masumi

Psychologist - Jini Kapur

Social Worker - Stephanie Whittaker

Virginia Run will always be a safe place for students and staff to learn and grow. Thank you for partnering with us to make Virginia Run the standard of excellence for learning and growing. We are stronger when we stay connected and work together.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Bumbrey, Principal

Family Liaison Update

Ms. Diana Archila, our family liaison, will be leaving VRES after working with us for several years. Ms. Archila has been promoted to Family Services Liaison with Loudon County Government.   This change is bittersweet. While we are happy for Ms. Archila, we will miss her greatly!  Ms. Archila’s last day at VRES is Friday, May 27, 2022.  Ms. Archila has graciously agreed to support us with emergency translations and communications until the end of the school year.  We have selected a new family liaison to support VRES in the 2022-2023 school year and will introduce her to the community once she has been cleared by FCPS Human Resources.

Best wishes, Ms. Archila!

Archila!
