Wear Orange on Friday, June 3rd!
The first Friday in June is recognized as National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Also known as Wear Orange Day, it was first organized by students to memorialize the 2013 death of their friend and gun violence victim, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton. After her death, they asked us to stand up, speak out, and Wear Orange to raise awareness.
Wednesday Mornings • 10 a.m. • Frying Pan Farm Park Visitor Center
Saturday mornings • 10 a.m. • Mason District Park, Burke Lake Park, EC Lawrence Park Amphitheater & Wakefield Park (behind the Rec Center)
Arts in the Parks is a FREE family fun alternative to Saturday & Wednesday morning cartoons & video games. It serves to entertain children, teach them the importance of protecting our natural resources, introduce them to live entertainment in an informal kid friendly atmosphere, and forge a connection between kids and parks.
For most children, Arts in the Parks is their first exposure to live entertainment, and for practically all of the young watchers, it's their first chance to join professionals on stage. So they remember and forever associate the delightful experiences with parks. For Fairfax County's younger set, ARTS IN THE PARKS has become THE THING TO DO!
Arts in the Parks is held at Burke Lake, Mason District, E.C. Lawrence, Frying Pan Farm Parks, and Wakefield Park Saturday and Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month. A stroke is a potentially life-threatening issue!
Unfortunately, strokes do happen. It is important that you and your loved ones know and recognize the warning signs of a stroke as every second counts! Please take a moment to review the below video from our friends at the American Heart Association.
In addition to the F.A.S.T. signs highlighted in below video, other symptoms may appear, separately, in combination or with F.A.S.T. signs. They are:
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech.
- Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg. Especially on one side of the body.
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
If you think you or a loved one are experiencing a stroke, call 9-1-1 as soon as possible! Your Fairfax County paramedics and firefighters will be there to assist you promptly.
Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns!
