Message from the Principal

Dr Grove

Dear Wolftrap Families,

BREAKING NEWS! Our own Kat Mehari was nominated by the community for a Cox Communication Education Hero award. She was one of 10 educators across Virginia, selected for going above and beyond to support her students. We surprised her in her room on Monday with a virtual call from Cox, an edible arrangement, a certificate and a $1000.00 grant for her classroom. Her students were ecstatic, cheering so loudly, that you may have heard them out in the community! Congratulations, Kat!!

GREEN TEAM! Classroom visits and activities are a vital and fantastic part of my job as principal. Last week, I visited with Wolftrap students that have been involved in Girl Scouts and have planted native plants in our beds on the side of the school. They look fantastic! Thank you to those students and their parent volunteers.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR: Any of you who have children that were in my class years ago, know that I often compare this time of year to a long car ride. Students care for each other, but they are growing impatient for summer and the end of the year. Unfortunately, we are seeing an increase in behavior concerns. Please take time with your students to remind them to be respectful of each other and adults in the building. Our commitment to the code of student rights and responsibilities extends to the last day of school, for every student. Thank you for your help with this important reminder.

SOL UPDATE: We are wrapping up our SOL testing, and the window has been extended to help us accommodate any students who have been absent. If you have questions about testing or make up tests, please contact Ms. O’Donovan, the Assistant Principal.

BAND AND STRINGS OPPORTUNITIES: Mr. McClure and Ms. Skeen continue to talk with students about their programs for the upcoming year. Please reach out if your student is interested in either program. Mr. McClure and Ms. Barker will be showcasing their programs on May 23rd, with a student and parent concert. These programs provide a wonderful opportunity for students to learn an instrument. I hope that many of you will take advantage of these opportunities.

As you know, COVID-19 cases have been increasing in Fairfax County and in schools. Here at Wolftrap, we have seen an increase in cases since late April and continue to encourage everyone to take the steps they feel necessary to stay safe and healthy. The cases have thankfully been declining, but we still need your help with this effort.

We have been transparent about how the pandemic is impacting Wolftrap and our students all year. We will continue to share daily COVID-19 notifications whenever there is a confirmed positive case in our school. This information is provided to make our school community aware of the current situation and be able to make informed decisions about how to protect themselves. Please continue to be vigilant at home by using the daily health screening questionnaire. Please let the office know if we can answer any questions.

I appreciate the patience, support, and understanding you have shown throughout this school year as we adjust our response to the pandemic. Together, we have kept our students participating in learning and activities. I look forward to celebrating the end of the school year with everyone.

When I send you a note again, it will be the last week of school! Traditionally, we also send a note out to families on the last day of school, to wrap up the year and with some good information to use over the summer. Until then, have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day.

Warmly,

Dr. Maggie Grove
Principal

Wofltrap PTA

It is hard to believe we only have a few more weeks of school left! PTA programs are still in swing, including the ongoing Sprouts School Supply sale and our upcoming Bike Train. There are also volunteer opportunities to help monitor lunch and help in the library. It is not too late to get involved!

The PTA Board took time in this issue of the Connection to thank another group of amazing volunteers who work so hard to make our PTA programs and events happen. So many people give their time and energy to our school and students, and we are so grateful to them! If you would like to become part of our volunteer parents next year, please reach out to any member of the Board.
