Dear KJMS Community,
Spring has sprung with the warmer weather. We hope you are able to get out this weekend and enjoy our first full days in the 90s! Soon enough, we will be back into swimming pools and competitive swim seasons.
Last Friday, we had our first and only dance of this school year. It was great seeing the students as they were dressed for the theme and some just dressed for success! By and large, our students exhibited our SOAR traits in all of their interactions with one another. As the year winds down, we still have a few fun events planned for our students. Please continue to speak with your student about following our SOAR expectations and completing all work and year-end testing to the best of their ability. We look forward to ending the year as strongly as we began it!

SOAR TRAITS |
In closing, as our year ends with all of our fine and performing arts final celebrations, we want to thank you all for the support and dedication to these programs. See a special note below from Mr. Burts, Band Director, that echoes the sentiment of the entire KJMS faculty and staff!
Stay cool,
Tammy Silipigni, Principal

Congratulations to all of our band students for their wonderful performance on our May 18 Spring Concert! You have all grown tremendously as musicians, and your hard work was evident to all in attendance; hopefully to yourselves, as well. Coming out of 18 months of separation, this year together has been a GIFT. Thank you! |
FCPS' Family Return to School Survey Is Coming Soon
Now that FCPS has transitioned back to a more typical school experience, the school division is interested in hearing from parents/caregivers about how the school year has gone for their students. You will have an opportunity to provide your feedback on our Family Return to School Survey which will open Tuesday, May 31, and close Friday, June 10.
The survey is being administered by the FCPS Office of Research and Strategic Improvement, which provides objective research and data-based information back to the school division’s leadership. The survey is part of the office’s continuing evaluation of the pandemic’s impact on our school division. We encourage all FCPS parents/caregivers to respond to the survey and share their experiences whether positive or negative. The information you and other families provide will be used, along with other data, to inform FCPS leadership about the return to five days a week of in-person instruction, and support FCPS’ efforts to make improvements that support schools, students, and staff. It will also be included in ESSER III reporting.
SAVE THE DATE
It is time for the KJMS Awards Program, which will be on Tuesday, June 7th. In the coming weeks, all the parents of students who will be recognized will receive emails from staff or phone calls inviting them to attend. This event will also be live streamed in case you cannot come in person or if you want to share the event with family and friends. We will email each family their student’s Team Award Link closer to June 7, 2022. Here is the schedule for the day for planning purposes.
Tuesday, June 7th
7:45-9:00 AM
- 7th grade Gym: HOKIES
- 8th grade Gym: SPARTANS
- Cafeteria: CAVALIERS
- Auditorium: PANTHERS
- Library: ESOL by Invitation
9:15-10:30 AM
- 7th grade Gym: PATRIOTS
- 8th grade Gym: CAPTAINS

After the Awards Programs, we will move into 8th Grade Celebration Day for the afternoon with field events, activities, and food for all 8th grade students. This will be a free event to celebrate their accomplishments of attending middle school–during a pandemic, no less! Our 7th graders will spend time in their TA classrooms doing other activities such as watching “Hidden Figures,” the Disney movie about our namesake, Katherine Johnson, and her team as they helped get our first astronauts to the moon.
SOL Testing Information
Students at Katherine Johnson Middle School will be participating in the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests during the last quarter of the school year. Please read the FCPS SOL website about the SOLs and the specific tests your students will be taking.
The specific testing dates for our school are:
- SOL Re-takes - May 24-26 (regular bell schedule)
Other KJMS Spring Testing Schedule
- Math Inventory - May 23 (New Date)
- Reading Inventory - June 1 & 2 (New Dates)
Student Laptop Collection
Students who received an FCPS laptop and charger this year will need to return it to school beginning Wednesday, June 8th. All laptops and chargers must be returned so that they can be updated for next school year. However, IF your student is attending summer programming and needs to keep their device, we need parents to complete this form to let us know.
Laptops and chargers will be collected outside of the cafeteria on Wednesday, June 8th and Thursday, June 9th during all lunches.
Any questions, please contact Kelsea Owens (kfowens@fcps.edu).
FCPS Summer Learning
A reminder that FCPS Online Campus Summer Courses are open for registration and available to eligible middle school students who meet prerequisites and technical requirements. Students may take one online course for first time or repeat credit. Middle school students may not take a mathematics course during the summer as their first high school level mathematics course. Courses are rigorous; therefore, students should consult their counselor prior to registering. Program information is available at Summer Learning.
Want to make a difference in the life of a child? Fairfax County Public Schools is looking for enthusiastic, engaged, and dedicated substitute teachers.
Substitutes help our students thrive when their teacher must be out of the classroom and are essential members of every school’s team. More information about the application process and requirements is available online.

- Encouraging independence, but remaining available.
- Offering emotional support to your child.
- Reiterating your family values and expectations.
- Staying involved in your child’s school.
This podcast’s infomercial is about summer camps. It’s not too early to start thinking about summer fun. The FCPS Tech Adventure Camp and the Career and Technical Education Camp are taking registrations for summer 2022.
