Reminder: Pick Up Medication by End of School Year

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school June 10, 2022. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services

Safe Student Drop-off

This message is to address trends with morning student drop-off and pick-up. With safety being our priority, please remember to adhere to these RCMS community expectations which allow for a safe and efficient drop-off and pick-up.

  • Please ONLY use the Kiss N Ride loop when dropping off students in the morning. No students should be dropped off in the RCMS parking lot, on McLearen Rd., or on EDS Dr. All locations other than Kiss N Ride place students in unsafe conditions.
  • Additionally, students who participate in after school programs should also be picked-up in the Kiss N Ride loop and not at another school location or location off-campus.

We appreciate your attention to these important procedures.

Sincerely,

The RCMS Administrative Team

Expunging High School Credits

High school credit courses taken in grades 7 and 8 become part of the student’s high school transcript and are included in the calculation of the high school Grade Point Average (GPA). VA State and FCPS regulations permit parents/guardians to make a request to have that course expunged from the student’s record.

Please contact your child's school counselor and submit the completed Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School Form.

Intentions for Next Year

If your child will NOT be attending Rachel Carson Middle or his/her base high school next year, please complete the Intention Form linked below and return it to ajtawil@fcps.edu to let us know where your child will be enrolled. Afterschool activities

Thursday, May 26th is the last day for After School Activities and late buses.

Chess Tournament Charity Event to help the Ukraine

The Rachel Carson Middle School (RCMS) hosted a charity chess event on May 14th, 2022, that was organized by Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) students and young competitive chess players (ages 11-14) in the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia) area to help the children of Ukraine. K. Slate and A. Haldankar from RCMS were the main student leaders. The event was a success beyond what anyone expected!! The event helped raise $5,467 and had 78 registered players, smashing the original goal of $2,000 and 50 players. All proceeds were donated to UNICEF to help the children of Ukraine.
For the young organizers, the process was an incredible journey where they combined their passion for the game of chess and their passion for bringing about positive change by taking action to help those in need. The event showed them that there is no age limit to what one can do and that great things are done by combining a series of small things together. Organizing a charity requires planning, gathering support from the community, getting sponsors onboard, using digital technology and social media to get the word out, which taught the students the power of teamwork.

You can read more about their experience in the attached blog. Ukraine charity chess tournament results in massive success - Chess.com

On Reporting Absences

Early Dismissals- Please read the following carefully

If your student will be picked up early for an appointment:
Please send them to
the front office in the morning with a note stating the time of the dismissal. Students will be given a pass to leave class and meet parents in the office. Parents should come to entrance #1, to the main office, with a photo ID to pick up their student for early dismissals.

Absences or late arrivals

If a student will be absent or arriving late to school, parents or guardians should always report the details of the absence to the RCMS Attendance Office. Teachers do not have access to mark a student excused for an absence, which is why it is imperative that parents contact the attendance office (instead of, or in addition to, the teacher) when their child is absent so we can mark them correctly.

To report an absence, parents have these options:

  1. Use the link to our online attendance form (preferred) from the main page of the RCMS website:
  2. Send an email with full details to: CarsonMiddle.Attendance@fcps.edu, or
  3. Call the attendance line at 703-925-3636 being sure to include the spelling of your student’s last name and reason for the absence.

For more information on the attendance policies, please visit the RCMS Attendance page.

FCPS Cares Program

The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees.
