Mental Health Green Day

Tomorrow- Wear Green Day of Action

Mental wellness is key to student success and the pandemic has added to mental health challenges facing children of all ages. We are joining the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and pediatricians across the Commonwealth in calling attention to this issue by participating in “Wear Green Day of Action” for mental health on tomorrow, May 20. Join us in “Wear Green Day of Action” tomorrow to call attention to this important issue. For resources to support the students in your life, visit our website.

May is Mental Health Acceptance Month. “The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a serious toll on the mental health of children in Virginia as young people continue to face physical isolation, ongoing uncertainty, fear, and grief,” says the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (VA-AAP). “Even before the pandemic, mental health challenges facing children were of great concern, and COVID-19 has only exacerbated them.”

Between March and October 2020, the percentage of emergency department visits for children with mental health emergencies rose by 24% for children ages 5-11 and 31% for children ages 12-17. There was also a more than 50% increase in suspected suicide attempt emergency department visits among girls ages 12-17 in early 2021 as compared to the same period in 2019. Read more in this news release from the VA-AAP.

The Difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day

Memorial Day and Veterans Day are often confused for one another and can be easily misunderstood. Both are patriotic holidays that honor the military community, however, these two federal holidays couldn’t be more different. As we near Memorial Day, let’s take a moment to take a closer look at the difference and why we celebrate Memorial Day.

Memorial Day, which is celebrated on the last Monday in May, honors service members who have died in military service to the nation. Originally known as “Decoration Day,” when citizens were encouraged to create memorials on soldiers' graves with flags and flowers, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968 which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May.

Conversely, Veterans Day, a federal holiday which falls on November 11, is designated as a day to honor those who have served in the U.S. military.

Today, Memorial Day is often associated with the start of summer. On May 30, 2022, take a moment to pay tribute to the fallen while still enjoying time with family and friends and the outdoors. Here are a few ideas to commemorate Memorial Day:

  • Participate in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m.
  • Visit a military cemetery or memorial
  • Display the U.S. flag at your home
  • Watch the National Memorial Day Concert on May 29, 2022

Update on Electric Bus Grant Award

FCPS electric school bus

One of the FCPS electric school buses on the road driven by Nick Rocha

As we continue to seek opportunities to expand the electric school bus fleet, FCPS recently accepted the grant award from The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and  Clean School Bus Program for funding to replace ten (10) diesel school buses with ten (10) electric school buses.  This latest grant award will bring our total number of electric school buses to 28.
