2022-23 School Year Calendar

Principal's Message

The past month since returning from Spring Break has flown by. Our students have been immersed in learning and showcasing their knowledge. Our 5th graders shared their global awareness research projects and explored  cultures in a hands on learning in the afternoon. Third grade held their annual GRECO day and students enjoyed an exploration of the ancient civilizations they have been studying this year. First grade held a plant eating party where they learned about healthy and delicious food choices. If you have been able to volunteer at one of these showcases for our teams, we thank you for your time and support of student learning. It has been wonderful to see our Chesterbrook traditions of learning return.

All of our third through sixth graders wrapped up the month with our state standardized testing while our primary students also finish end of the year assessments to show us all they have accomplished. Our student results are strong and we want to recognize the dedication of our teachers to provide high quality instruction, interventions and enrichments throughout the year. I could not be more proud of the focus and dedication of our students as they are wrapping up the year. SOL results will be available in Parent Vue and we will let you know when those are posted.

With three weeks left in our school year, we are not yet done with the fun and learning. I am looking forward to our end of the year concerts for our strings, band and choir students. Teachers are continuing to wrap up end of the year assessments as we capture their growth and plan for needs for the 22-23 school year. We also are planning for our team building days from May 31 - June 2nd where students will be working within their Houses at House Fest. See below if you would like to join us and volunteer. We would love to have you! We also look forward to welcoming our McLean High School Seniors that will be graduating. We will welcome our Chesterbrook Alumni back on May 31st at 1:30 to take a "Memory Walk" before they walk the stage at graduation on June 1st.

Lastly, I appreciate everyone weathering the latest round of covid cases we have encountered since the break. We have seen spikes in some areas and will alert you if we have a determined outbreak with your class or grade level. This past week we did report an outbreak in a grade level and informed close contacts of possible exposure. We will continue to try to stay on top of the cases and ask that parents continue diligence in keeping sick kids home. For parent convenience, click here for the Daily Health Questionnaire.
We are continuing to try to eat outdoors when the weather allows and practicing good hygiene. I cannot thank our lunch volunteers enough for the consistency and care they have provided our students all year. When we began this year, eating outdoors was a challenging task and this small crew of dedicated parents made it happen. I'm forever grateful to each of them.

As a Chesterbrook staff, we are excited to celebrate the hard work and efforts of our students as we close out the school year over the next three weeks. This year brought us back together and we all showed flexibility and care in supporting each other through the celebrations and difficult times. I'm grateful to this community for your understanding and support as we have continued to navigate. Wishing you all a wonderful week!

Warmly,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal

Word Master Challenge Top Award

Megan C, CES 6th grader, recently earned Individual Highest Honors in this year’s WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 125,000 students annually.  With three meets spanning the school year, Megan completed the overall competition with a cumulative score of 57 out of a possible 60 points.  Highest Honors are reserved for students who place among the top 10-15 students in their division.

The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.  Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.

The Word Masters team, which meets before school, was coached by Ms. Beggan this school year. We look forward to continuing this program next year and watching our kids continue to challenge themselves in this enrichment program.

McLean HS/Senior Memory Walk at Chesterbrook - May 31st 1:45 PM

We invite high school seniors who are past students of Chesterbrook Elementary to come to CES in their cap and gown for pictures and a graduation walk around our school on Tuesday, May 31st.  Seniors should gather at 1:30 p.m. in front of the school with the walk at 1:45PM.  We will capture this moment then and then have our current Chesterbrook students congratulate them as they walk the halls and reminisce about their time in Elementary! Congratulations to our 2022 high school graduates!

lost and found

Lost and Found Last Chance

Next week we will place lost and found items outside on June 1st through June 3rd of next week.  We have quite the collection of sweatshirts and coats as well as some water bottles. Items will be donated after June 3rd.

Family Return to School Survey

Now that FCPS has transitioned back to a more typical school experience, the school division is interested in hearing from parents/caregivers about how the school year has gone for their students. You will have an opportunity to provide your feedback on our Family Return to School Survey which will open Tuesday, May 31, and close Friday, June 10.

The survey is being administered by the FCPS Office of Research and Strategic Improvement, which provides objective research and data-based information back to the school division’s leadership. The survey is part of the office’s continuing evaluation of the pandemic’s impact on our school division. We encourage all FCPS parents/caregivers to respond to the survey and share their experiences whether positive or negative. The information you and other families provide will be used, along with other data, to inform FCPS leadership about the return to five days a week of in-person instruction, and support FCPS’ efforts to make improvements that support schools, students, and staff. It will also be included in ESSER III reporting.
