Franklin MS Weekly Update - May 13

Franklin Families and Students,

We were fortunate to host several special guests at our school yesterday to celebrate the success of the Franklin Middle School Culinary Challenge team. These students-chefs were joined by Mrs. Stella Pekarsky, our FCPS School Board Chair and Sully District Representative, Ms. Rebecca Baenig, the Region 5 Assistant Superintendent, the leadership team from Real Food for Kids, and members of the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services team. We would like to share our gratitude to all of them for their support of our students!

They were here to celebrate Ellie Whiteman, Hannah Lee, Anvita Gandi and Janya Pate and their teachers Mrs. Jeffry and Mrs. Spencer. This awesome team created a dish so tasty and nutritious that it has been chosen to be added to Fairfax County Public Schools lunch menus. The students developed their dish when they entered it in the Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge, a competition for students across the D.C. area earlier this spring.

The Culinary Challenge team calls their entrée the Vegejita Wrapadilla. It is a quesadilla stuffed with green and red bell peppers, tomatoes, and onions. They serve it with a black bean/corn/tomato salad, alongside guacamole and a slice of watermelon sprinkled with chili powder and lime zest. You can learn more  about this their success in this statement from Fairfax County Public Schools. Also be sure to check out the spotlight our students received from WJLA. Congrats to our students!

As we head in to the home stretch of the school year, don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of our team if there is anything we can do to support your student.

Best wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Proud Principal

Spring SOL Testing Calendar

The spring SOL testing calendar can be found below. Details about testing days and possible changes to the bell schedule will be communicated regularly to students ahead of the testing window. It is important that students are in school on-time on these testing days. Please avoid scheduling appointments during this time.

Tuesday, May 17 - Reading 7 SOL

Wednesday, May 18 - Reading 8 SOL

A few items to note related to testing:

  • If a student is absent on their testing day, makeup tests can occur throughout the testing window.
  • Local alternative assessments have been approved by the state of Virginia in Grade 7 History, Grade 8 Writing and Grade 8 Civics and Economics. Teachers will be using an alternative assessment in those classes in lieu of an SOL test. Those assessments occur within the classroom setting throughout the second semester.

Parent Permission to Retest Form

The Virginia Board of Education allows elementary and middle school students who fail Standards of Learning (SOL) tests by a narrow margin to retake the test before the end of the school year. Retesting is available when a student fails their first attempt with a score of 375-399 (where 400 is passing).

Parent permission is required for any retests in grades 3-8. If you believe that your student would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills on the SOL test, please complete the Google form below. A decision not to allow retesting will not impact your student’s course grade or academic record.

Please complete this Google Form as soon as possible to provide consent for your child to retest, if needed. If you have any questions regarding testing, please contact Franklin’s school test coordinator, Brandon Clarke.

Expunging High School Credits

High school credit courses taken in grades 7 and 8 become part of the student’s high school transcript and are included in the calculation of the high school Grade Point Average (GPA). VA State and FCPS regulations permit parents/guardians to make a request to have that course expunged from the student’s record.

Please contact your child's school counselor and submit the completed Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School Form.

COVID-19 Updates from FCPS

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) continues to monitor cases and report COVID-19 outbreaks, as outlined by the Virginia Department of Health. Currently, Fairfax County's Community Level remains low as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our layered prevention strategies are being implemented based on our COVID-19 Community Level, as recommended by the CDC.

However, FCPS has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks and parents/legal guardians are reminded of the daily health screening requirement to check their students for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. Parents and guardians are advised to keep their students home if sick and get them tested to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Additional recommendations to prevent COVID-19 are available online.
