Eagle Community,

This week marked the completion of our official SOL testing season. While we still have a few make-up and retests to administer, by and large, the vast majority of students have completed the testing. We want to share that our students have done amazingly well on the math and science tests (reading test scores are still coming in since we just tested yesterday!). In fact, our students made great progress in math as measured by their fall Virginia Growth Assessments. The science testing presented the challenge of being a test that covered 6th, 7th, and 8th grade material. With our students leaving 6th grade in the spring of 2020, and this past year being much different in 7th grade, we knew that our students had much information to learn to prepare for SOL testing. Prepare they did! Many students did very well on the SOL, and most of those who will take advantage of re-testing were only 1-2 questions shy of passing. We know that our success happens because of the hard work of students and staff partnered with the supports you offer at home. Thanks to all of you for helping our students return to learning in a strong and positive way.

SAVE THE DATE: It is time for the KJMS Awards Program, which will be on Tuesday, June 7th. In the coming weeks, all the parents of students who will be recognized will receive emails from staff or phone calls inviting them to attend. This event will also be live streamed in case you cannot come in person or if you want to share the event with family and friends. We will email each family their student’s Team Award Link closer to June 7, 2022. Here is the schedule for the day for planning purposes.

Tuesday, June 7th

7:45-9:00 AM

  • 7th grade Gym: HOKIES
  • 8th grade Gym: SPARTANS
  • Cafeteria: CAVALIERS
  • Auditorium: PANTHERS
  • Library: ESOL by Invitation

9:15-10:30 AM

  • 7th grade Gym: PATRIOTS
  • 8th grade Gym: CAPTAINS
  • Cafeteria: HIGHLANDERS
  • Auditorium: NIGHTHAWKS

After the Awards Programs, we will move into 8th Grade Celebration Day for the afternoon with field events, activities, and food for all 8th grade students. This will be a free event to celebrate their accomplishments of attending middle school–during a pandemic, no less! Our 7th graders will spend time in their TA classrooms doing other activities such as watching “Hidden Figures,” the Disney movie about our namesake, Katherine Johnson, and her team as they helped get our first astronauts to the moon.

In closing, we would like to thank our departing PTA Executive Board for all of the work this year to support our KJMS students and staff. Missy Gallihugh (President), Gina Lummus (Treasurer), and Monika Kluczyk (Secretary) have invested much personal time and energy alongside a core group of other parent volunteers to ensure our PTA had a successful year. We want to congratulate our new 2022-2023 officers:

  • President: Jaime Yarussi,
  • Secretary: Claudia DeFries,
  • Treasurer: Claudia Young.

Sincerely,

Tammy Silipigni

Multilingual Parent Podcasts: Making the Transition to Middle School

En Pocas Palabras graphic

Making the move from elementary school to middle school can be both an exciting and unsettling time for a parent and student. In this week’s podcast, hear ways to ease the transition by:

  • Understanding the developmental changes in your child.
  • Getting to know middle school culture.
  • Encouraging independence, but remaining available.
  • Offering emotional support to your child.
  • Reiterating your family values and expectations.
  • Staying involved in your child’s school.

This podcast’s infomercial is about summer camps. It’s not too early to start thinking about summer fun. The FCPS Tech Adventure Camp and the Career and Technical Education Camp are taking registrations for summer 2022.
