Principals' Message

Dear Bonnie Brae School Community,

Our students continue to be engaged as we look forward to many exciting end of the year events and activities including the PTO spring carnival, 6th grade promotion and our fine arts concert. We look forward to seeing many of our families at these events!

As you may have noticed in our health updates, we have seen an increase in COVID-19 cases along with many other schools in FCPS. We included some reminders below regarding our layered mitigation strategies and links to the FCPS COVID-19 dashboard. If you have any questions regarding procedures or protocols, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office.

Sincerely,

Morgan Birge, Principal

Elaine Woo, Assistant Principal

Scott Hawk, Assistant Principal

Positivity Project

Positivity Project

This past week was our last official week for the Positivity Project. Our teachers and students have engaged with all 24 Character Strengths and have learned a lot throughout the way. Our community will continue to dig deeper into these character strengths as we close out the 2021-2022 school year. Thank you for supporting us with meaningful conversations at home.

Increase in COVID Cases in Fairfax County

We are aware that FCPS has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks and nervousness in our community as our County has transitioned out of the low community level into a medium COVID-19 community level. We want you to know that we are doing everything we can to keep our schools open and safe for all students to learn.

Our layered prevention strategies have generally served us well throughout this school year, and we have continued to work with the U.S. Department of Health and Northern Virginia Health Departments to do what we are able to to keep our students safe. We understand that some people are wondering why we have not returned to requiring universal masking.

The Code of Virginia mandates that schools cannot require universal masking without allowing the parent/legal guardian to elect for their child to not wear a face covering while on school property (to include FCPS buildings).

However, there are many things each of us can choose to do to help keep ourselves, our students, and our colleagues safe and healthy.

Get Vaccinated or Boosted - Vaccination is the best protection we have against severe illness. Everyone is encouraged to stay up to date with vaccinations and boosters. If you need more information about COVID-19 vaccinations or where to get the dose you need, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website.

Consider a Mask - Mask use is optional for everyone in FCPS schools. However, health experts agree that wearing a mask is an excellent practice for avoiding COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses. If you are immunocompromised or at high risk of severe illness, or live or have social contact with someone in this situation, speak with your healthcare provider about whether you need to wear a mask or take additional precautions.

Stay Home When Sick and Get Tested - This time of year sniffles and fatigue may be allergies, or they may be COVID-19. That is why it is always best practice to stay home if you are sick or having symptoms and get tested as soon as possible. Staying home when you are sick or having symptoms is the best thing you can do to help stop the spread of any virus, especially COVID-19.

Bonnie Brae Class Placement

Thank you for your continued partnership with staff at Bonnie Brae Elementary! We know that a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success. We carefully consider each child’s strengths and needs during the class creation process. We encourage family input to share information school staff should be aware of to aid the process of creating classes for the 2022 - 2023 school year. Keep in mind family input is one of multiple pieces of information used to create classes and classes are not finalized until late August. So that your submission can be considered prior to conversations with current staff, please submit your input here no later than Friday, May 13, 2022. Thank you!

BBES Lunch and Recess Volunteer Opportunity

We are seeking parent volunteers to support during our lunch hours and recess hours. Lunch starts at 10:45am and ends at 1:30pm. Our grade levels have recess scattered throughout the day at various times from 9:30am - 2:45pm. Volunteers in both settings have the opportunity to connect and engage with students on a daily basis and support the safety and supervision of students at Bonnie Brae. Even 30 minutes of support one day a week can be a help to our students.

If you are interested in supporting any day(s) of the week on a consistent basis during any portion of our lunch block, please contact Kathy Rials, kerials@fcps.edu

Thank you for considering this opportunity to support our students and to continue encouraging safety protocols.
