Sports Highlights

Baseball

The Patriot District leading Lake Braddock Bruins came to Knupp Stadium looking to for revenge after losing the first meeting between the teams.  Woodson’s prospects looked dim with four starters out for the game, but the Cavs responded with one of their best games of the season.

Starter Ben Smallwood delivered a gritty performance, scattering 8 hits and allowing only one run in a complete game victory. His steady confidence on the mound buoyed the Cavalier defense, which came up with several big plays to keep the Bruins offense in check. Smallwood made several fine fielding plays, ending the first two innings with comebackers. After Braddock had tied the game at 1 in the 3rd, Catcher A.J. Viccora threw out a runner trying to steal second. That play saved a run when the next hitter doubled.

Lake Braddock’s starter Jake Drumm matched Smallwood’s brilliant performance with eight strikeouts over six strong innings. Woodson got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead off doubles from Jay Sorkin and Andrew Perks in the first inning. The Cavs mounted a two-out rally in the 4th when Brandon Shelhorse singled, followed by a double from ViccoraIan Santamauro legged out an infield single to score Shelhorse and take a 2-1 lead.

Clinging to that slim lead, the determined Cavaliers defense held fast over the final three frames. The Bruins’ leadoff hitter Quincy Via singled and stole second to open the 5th, but Smallwood saved a run when he snagged a sharp grounder, looked Via back to second base, then got the batter for the first out of the inning. Two ground balls ended that threat. The first two batters reached to open the 6th, but Smallwood notched two crucial strikeouts and induced a lazy fly ball to CF Wilson Stahl.

Smallwood fanned Via to open the final inning. The next batter hit a routine grounder, but reached on an error. Anxious fans held their breath when the next batter walked, bringing Braddock’s best hitter Evan Schick to the plate.  The runners advanced on a double steal, moving the go-ahead run into scoring position with only one out. Schick hit a sharp line drive to right, but Dillon Brody fielded it and made a fine throw to prevent the runners from advancing.  With Smallwood only a few pitches shy of his limit, Coach McColley intentionally walked the next batter. With the game on the line, Braddock’s batter delivered a sharp liner to right, but Andrew Perks saved the game with a diving catch to seal the win.

Girls Lacrosse

Woodson girls’ lacrosse had two big home game wins this week.  Tuesday night, the JV and varsity teams faced off against the Lake Braddock Bruins.  The Cavalier JV squad bested the Bruins 10 - 6, and the Cavalier varsity defeated the Bruins 21 – 8.  The entire team saw action in the game which was highlighted by several defenders tallying goals.

Last Friday the Lady Cavaliers took on the Alexandria City Titans.  The JV Lady Cavaliers beat the Titans 16 – 1.  The Varsity Lady Cavaliers won with a score of 20 – 3.

It was also Senior Night. Woodson girls lacrosse 2022 graduating seniors include:  Kendyl Ellenberger (James Madison University), Lauren Faulkner (Florida State), Mikaely Griffin (College of Charleston), Emerson Bradshaw (East Carolina), Holly Wehrlen (Virginia Tech), and Jayla Teller (Virginia Tech or Lee-McRae College).

Boys Tennis

Woodson Boys Tennis are undefeated at 13-0 after defeating South County and two wins against Alexandria City last week. The regular season concludes tonight with a home match against Fairfax at 4:30. It is also Senior Night for the following Class of 2022 players: Khoi Huynh, Collin Ollis, Ansh Pathapadu, Daniel Sitrin, and Vincent Truong

Singles and Doubles playoffs start this week for Vincent Truong and Ansh Pathapadu. The team will compete in the District Playoffs next week. Schedules are TBD.

It is also Senior Night for the following Class of 2022 players: Khoi Huynh, Collin Ollis, Ansh Pathapadu, Daniel Sitrin, Vincent Truong, and Nate Vu.

Softball

The Woodson Varsity Softball team enters the last week of the regular season having won 4 of their last 5 games. This past week, they beat Lake Braddock 9-6 and Alexandria City 8-4.

Against Lake Braddock, the Cavaliers were led by Juniors Elizabeth Schneider and Sarah Banker. Banker went 4 for 4 at the plate with a double and 3 singles. Schneider went 2-4 with a home run, a single and 5 RBI. Schneider’s 3-run homer to centerfield came in the bottom of the 6th inning with 2 outs and Woodson clinging to a 6-5 lead. Sophomore Sedona Adams also chipped in with a double and 2 RBI.

Sophomore Claire Warden pitched a complete game for the victory against Lake Braddock. Warden struck out 7 in her 145-pitch performance.

Against Alexandria City, Woodson honored their 4 Seniors playing their final home game of the regular season: Jaiden Petrella, Ashlee Savory and co-captains Zoe Johnson and Veronica Udowitz.

In the pitcher’s circle, Udowitz earned the victory, allowing 3 hits and 1 earned run in 4-innings of work. Sophomore Ceci Temple pitched a clean 7th inning in relief to preserve the victory. Defensively, Woodson was sound, turning 2 double plays led by shortstop Banker and first baseman Sophomore Emma Fleming.

Fleming led the offensive charge going 3-3 at the plate and driving in 4 runs. Adams had 2 singles and brought in 1 run.

Woodson closes out the regular season this week with road games at West Potomac and South County on Tuesday and Wednesday.
