Message from Ms. Kearns

Dear Lake Braddock Families,

We had a BUSY week filled with AP and SOL testing, sports playoffs, National Junior Honor Society inductions, and preparing for the Class of 2022 Prom. A huge congratulation goes out to our Performing Art Department for their Anastasia production. The play was amazing, and we are appreciative for all who came out to support our students on the stage and on the fields this week. We are extremely lucky to have such talented students and a supportive community.

With 5 weeks left of school, we ask that you work with your students to pace themselves and to take time to plan and cherish the moments. The hustle and bustle to finish the year can cause undue stress, pressure, and frustration. We ask that you remember to give yourself and others grace as we close out this calendar year.  Summer is quickly approaching and much needed rest and family time is needed for all.

As we round out the year, please reach out to us if we can answer any questions or provide your family support.

Go Bruin Nation!

Lindsey Kearns

The cast and crew of Lake Braddock's Theatre's performance of Anastasia returned to the stage for a beautiful encore of the song “Stay I Pray You” in recognition of the war in Ukraine.   They distributed sunflowers to the audience members as well.

Safe Routes to School Update

Congrats and thanks to the teachers, administrators and students who participated in National Bike and Roll to School Day last week!  Below is a photo of Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Braddock District Supervisor Walkinshaw talking with Principal Kearns and two volunteers who led groups of student cyclists to Lake Braddock.  National Bike to Work Day is Wednesday May 20–another opportunity for teachers, students and parents to bike to Lake Braddock!

The Safe Routes to School committee has asked Fairfax County Police Department’s Traffic Division to conduct an assessment of our crossing guard schedule and school zone, so that bus flow is improved to ensure students get to school on time.  Current policy only allows each school’s crossing guard to be present 30 minutes before the bell time, but it does not provide larger schools more time.

Want to make getting to school safer for everyone?  Please take our parent commuting survey!   https://forms.gle/whj5rCMsVDNnhYRY8

Looking for ideas to help reduce the cost, time or stress of your commute to work or school?  Commuter Connections is a website and app developed by the Metro DC Council of Governments to help residents find commuting options and support to fit their needs:https://www.commuterconnections.org/

Did you know that all FCPS high school and middle school students can sign up for a Free Student Bus SmarTrip card at their schools?  See here for more info and the needed permission form. https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector/student-pass

COVID Information

Spring Health and Safety

FCPS has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks and we understand families and staff have concerns and questions. Our commitment is to provide students with the education and support to help them succeed while maintaining a safe environment for in-person learning.

Our layered prevention strategies have served us well throughout this school year, and are fully supported by the U.S. Department of Education and Northern Virginia Health Departments.

Vaccinations are available for school-age children five and up and are proven to reduce the severity of illness. Everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated or boosted.

Currently, masks are optional for all students, staff, and visitors. We encourage families and staff to consider wearing a mask when reports of COVID cases are high or if they or a family member is at high risk. CDC advises individuals to wear a mask when there is a lot of COVID in your community. See a full list of masking recommendations on the CDC website.

If Fairfax County transitions to high community level, FCPS will require all students, staff, and visitors to wear a face covering when indoors (except while actively eating/drinking) on school property (to include the buildings, school buses and other school provided vehicles).

In alignment with the Code of Virginia, the parent/legal guardian of any child enrolled in

an FCPS school may elect for such child to not wear a face covering while on school

property (to include FCPS buildings). No reason or documentation will be necessary to elect for your child to not wear a mask.

One of the most important things we can all do is check for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. Parents and guardians are advised to keep their students home if sick and get them tested to stop further spread from occurring. Employees are also advised to stay home and get tested when feeling sick.

The most up to date information is available on the Health and Safety Guidance Document webpage. If you have questions or concerns unique to your child’s situation, please contact your school.

Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our schools safe and healthy so all our students have the opportunity for engaging in-person learning.

Additional recommendations to prevent COVID-19 are available online.

For the most up-to-date information, please see the FCPS website for Health and Safety Guidance Document and COVID-19 Testing.

SOL Testing and Bell Schedule

SOL and AP testing will occur throughout the building this May. We are adjusting the SOL testing block on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through May 18 to end at 10:30 due to technical issues we are having with student computers. Second chance breakfast will not be offered on the days when the bell schedule has been modified for testing. An updated calendar and bell schedule can be found on the LBSS SOL Testing website, under the first drop down menu. Please make sure your students are completing the FCPS laptop updates as instructed during Advisory periods. Please try to avoid scheduling your students for appointments during their testing times as there is not much availability for make-up testing.

Students need to bring their FCPS laptops, fully charged to SOL testing. VDOE does not allow for students to take SOL tests on personal devices. As per the testing electronic device policy, students are not permitted to have cell phones, smart watches, and any Bluetooth or internet connected devices (such as earbuds) on them during testing. If they are found to have such devices, it is considered cheating and they will receive a score of zero on the SOL test and not be permitted to test again this spring.

Sports Physical Night-Request for Help!

We are looking for medical practitioners (MDs, DOs, LNPs, and PAs) that are interested in volunteering for our annual Sports Physical Night event! We need professionals willing and able to sign off on a student’s readiness to participate in athletics. If you’ve never seen how this event works, it has a production line-like setup. Students first complete a multi-station screening process which includes anthropometric measurements, blood pressure/pulse and vision (these stations are typically supervised by ATs, RNs, EMTs and PTs). Once the initial screening stations are complete, the student proceeds to the exam station where an MD, DO, LNP or PA will review their medical history as well as the results of the previously completed stations before conducting any medical/musculoskeletal evaluations deemed necessary to sign off on the student’s medical eligibility status.

This event serves as our main source of fundraising to replenish sports medicine supplies for the year and offer our athletes the best possible care. If you are an MD, DO, LNP, or PA, please consider donating your time and expertise to support a key component of Lake Braddock’s Athletic Training Program. We understand that health and safety are still a concern, so if there are any suggestions/stipulations you may have to make this work, don’t hesitate to share. We are willing to accommodate as best we can! If you know a practitioner who could help us out, please pass along this message and the signup link below!!

CLICK HERE to volunteer for the Lake Braddock/South County/West Springfield Physical Night event on June 9th, 2022!

How to Stay In Touch

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:

Attendance Lines

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Procedures for Picking Up a Student Early

  • Prior to 8:00 a.m., the student must present a note from the parent to their subschool office. Notes must include time of dismissal, reason for leaving, and a contact number. Parents of middle school students must also include the name of the person picking the student up. Please note that this person must be listed as an emergency contact. At the time of early check-out, middle school parents must come in Entrance 1 and meet their student at the security desk. Anyone picking up a middle school student must bring a photo ID with them. High school parents may pick up students outside Entrance 1.
  • Notes are strongly preferred for early check-out, but if a parent is unable to send a note with the student, the parent should call the subschool office as early as possible. All calls will be confirmed by callback to a phone number on the emergency care card. Regrettably, if the parent did not send a note with the student, the parent will be required to park, come into the school to furnish a note, and pick up the student. Without advance notice provided by a note, there may be a wait until our staff is able to locate the student, particularly if the student is at lunch or in a physical education class. We further regret that without advance notice, we are unable to accommodate requests for early dismissal after 2:15 pm.
  • In either case, students must check out at the subschool office when leaving school and check in with the security desk upon return. Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action (if returning to school, students are also subject to search). Students must contact all teachers of any class to be missed.

Read our full Attendance procedures at our website.

Late Bus Information

Late bus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Buses will pick up students in the front of the building with a departure time of approximately 4:45 pm.  Please check  StudentVue and ParentVue for your student's late bus number and stop. If you have any questions, please contact your student's appropriate subschool.
