McNair Elementary Mustang News

Thanks, McNair PTA!  Our little Mustangs had a great time at the Fun Run!

New Crosswalk on Fox Mill Road

Effective Monday, May 9, the crossing guard located at McNair Upper ES will move from the existing crosswalk located at Greg Roy to the new crosswalk located near the main entrance of the school.  Please see the map below for a visual.

A few notes to ensure the safety of our school community…

  • We ask that families use the crosswalk and not cross other parts of Fox Mill Road to get to and from school each day.
  • We kindly ask that families do not double park vehicles, make illegal U-turns, or stop and drop their child off in the middle of Fox Mill Road.
  • Until our school community becomes familiar with this new traffic pattern, we ask that you plan your mornings accordingly by allowing additional time to get to school so that your Mustang is on time.
  • As a friendly reminder, we open our doors at both schools at 8:35 AM. The bell rings at 8:45 AM to begin the instructional day.
  • The Kiss & Ride entrance and exit remain the same. As do the rules when using our Kiss & Ride.

Thank you for your part in make our Mustangs journey to and from school each day a safe one by following these simple traffic rules.

Stay Home When Sick

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) continues to monitor cases and report COVID-19 outbreaks, as outlined by the Virginia Department of Health. Currently, Fairfax County's Community Level remains low as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our layered prevention strategies are being implemented based on our COVID-19 Community Level, as recommended by the CDC.

However, FCPS has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks and parents/legal guardians are reminded of the daily health screening requirement to check their students for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. Parents and guardians are advised to keep their students home if sick and get them tested to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

VaxUp

We continue to encourage everyone to get vaccinated or boosted as soon as they are eligible. COVID-19 vaccination keeps children safely in school and childcare settings, and also while participating in sports, playdates, extracurricular activities, and other group activities. Strong community vaccination rates help keep our schools safe for in-person learning. To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine, or to find a vaccine provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website.

Masking

As a reminder, students may return to school after five days of isolation if they are fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication) and symptoms are improving. As recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) individuals should continue to wear a well-fitting mask around others at home and in public for five additional days (day six through day 10) after the end of the five day isolation period. If individuals are unable to wear a mask when around others, they should continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home. While not required, wearing a mask while indoors is still considered an important way to protect yourself and others. Families are encouraged to discuss mask wearing as an additional layered prevention strategy.

Additional recommendations to prevent COVID-19 are available online.

Class Grouping Input by Friday, May 13

Creating class assignments for next year requires careful consideration and the involvement of many staff members.  We know that a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success.  If you feel that you have information about your child that the school staff may not know, particularly regarding friendships or neighborhood factors, please submit it to the principal, Merrell Dade, at mvdade@fcps.edu in writing by Friday, May 13.  Our teachers use this information to create preliminary class groupings in May/June.

We also ask that you do not request specific teachers.  This does not take into account the many variables to be considered such as grade-level changes or reductions in staff.  It is far more valuable to share particular academic or behavioral concerns.  Be assured that, with or without a parent letter, each child’s strengths and needs are considered in this lengthy and complex process.
