Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week

Dear Eagle Families and Community,

What a great week to work at KJMS! We are so proud for the ways our KJMS PTA and families celebrated our staff this week.  Everyday, our staff received treats and prizes through our raffles and through your generosity. In fact, each of our staff won a prize! They also loved the increase of public recognition with your submission to FCPS Cares

Here is a recap of how each day was special:

Monday:  Raffle (courtesy of gifts donated from families and Starbucks), Ice Cream Treats - Hosted by our Admin Team

Tuesday: Taco Tuesday sponsored by KJMS PTA, and Gift bags sponsored by NHJS

Wednesday: "Let the 4th be With You" cupcakes - shaped as Star Wars light sabers hosted by our Admin; Coupons for free Nothing Bundt Cake Bundlets (Fair Lakes location) and Rita's Ice Treats (Fairfax City location)

Thursday: Duck Donuts (Fairfax Blvd) with coffee and juices - Sponsored by our PTA

Friday: Muffins by Fairfax Bakery (Fairfax Blvd)- Sponsored by the City of Fairfax Schools and the Admin

We appreciate the many donations from our community that helped to make this week very special for our AWESOME staff! Show your support by frequenting supporting establishments: Duck Donuts, Fairfax Bakery, Wegmans, Starbucks (Kamp Washington), Smiles (Fairfax Corner), Rita Italian Ice (Fairfax City), Nothing Bundt Cakes (Fair Lakes).

In honor of Mother's Day this weekend, we want to thank all of the KJMS mothers (and those who serve in this capacity) for the support and guidance you provide for our Eagles each and everyday. We know that middle school students may not articulate their gratitude, but know you are loved, valued and appreciated!

In closing, we are ending the week with smiles and yellow shirts in honor of Osteogenesis Imperfecta awareness. One of our very own Eagles championed this day (see picture below of her with me and her mother). We are proud of her for helping educate our students and staff on this rare disease and how it impacts people. Thank you to all who wore yellow on Friday!

COVID-19 Updates from FCPS

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) continues to monitor cases and report COVID-19 outbreaks, as outlined by the Virginia Department of Health. Currently, Fairfax County's Community Level remains low as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our layered prevention strategies are being implemented based on our COVID-19 Community Level, as recommended by the CDC.

However, FCPS has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks and parents/legal guardians are reminded of the daily health screening requirement to check their students for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. Parents and guardians are advised to keep their students home if sick and get them tested to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Additional recommendations to prevent COVID-19 are available online.

Additionally, students who fail any of their SOL tests by a narrow margin will be given the opportunity to retest with parent permission.  In order to facilitate SOL retakes we need to know ahead of time if you give your child permission to retest in the event that they score between 375-399.

Please fill out this Retest Permission Form and send it to school by May 13, 2022.  Please fill out a separate form for each student you have at Katherine Johnson MS.  A decision not to allow retesting will not impact your child’s course grade or academic record.

Vietnamese

Please contact the school's Testing Coordinator, Griselda Mendoza, at gmendoza@fcps.edu with any questions or concerns.

Student Laptop Collection

Students who received an FCPS laptop and charger this year will need to return it to school beginning Wednesday, June 8th. All laptops and chargers must be returned so that they can be updated for next school year. However, IF your student is attending summer programming and needs to keep their device, we need parents to complete this form to let us know.

Laptops and chargers will be collected outside of the cafeteria on Wednesday, June 8th and Thursday, June 9th during all lunches.

Any questions, please contact Kelsea Owens (kfowens@fcps.edu).

  • Staying involved in your child’s school.

This podcast’s infomercial is about summer camps. It’s not too early to start thinking about summer fun. The FCPS Tech Adventure Camp and the Career and Technical Education Camp are taking registrations for summer 2022.
