Franklin Sherman Flash - May 9

Dear Franklin Sherman Families,

We hope all of our moms out there had a great Mother's Day!

This past week, our first grade authors demonstrated what it means to be subject matter experts with their nonfiction writing at Safari Day.  I was so impressed with their books which included many nonfiction text features.  Our young authors are amazing.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) continues to monitor cases and report COVID-19 outbreaks, as outlined by the Virginia Department of Health. Currently, Fairfax County's Community Level remains low as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our layered prevention strategies are being implemented based on our COVID-19 Community Level, as recommended by the CDC.

However, FCPS has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks and parents/legal guardians are reminded of the daily health screening requirement to check their students for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. Parents and guardians are advised to keep their students home if sick and get them tested to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

We look forward to seeing your family at the PTA Spring Fling and Raffle on Friday.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,

Kathleen Quigley

Principal

Help us get an accurate estimate  student enrollment for next school year.  Enrollment can be difficult to predict and having an estimate that is as accurate as possible is important for many reasons including student teacher ratio and budget allocation.  Tell us about the enrollment intention of your child today by filling out this form and emailing it to our Registrar, Ann Rajabi.

All families should submit this form including those who will remain enrolled at Franklin Sherman and families with 6th Grade students who will be moving on to middle school.

Latest COVID-19 Update

COVID

VaxUp

We continue to encourage everyone to get vaccinated or boosted as soon as they are eligible. COVID-19 vaccination keeps children safely in school and childcare settings, and also while participating in sports, playdates, extracurricular activities, and other group activities. Strong community vaccination rates help keep our schools safe for in-person learning. To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine, or to find a vaccine provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website.

Masking

As a reminder, students may return to school after five days of isolation if they are fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication) and symptoms are improving. As recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) individuals should continue to wear a well-fitting mask around others at home and in public for five additional days (day six through day 10) after the end of the five day isolation period. If individuals are unable to wear a mask when around others, they should continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home. While not required, wearing a mask while indoors is still considered an important way to protect yourself and others. Families are encouraged to discuss mask wearing as an additional layered prevention strategy.

Additional recommendations to prevent COVID-19 are available online.

McLean Community Center Opens After School Program to Rising 7th Graders

mcc logo

From MCC.

What we are doing is extending our After School Program to the rising 7th graders, free of charge, from May 16 - June 10 (last day of school year).  Our After School Program usually runs from 2:30-6pm, M-F, for 7th & up.

We will be extending our ASP to 7pm during this time period as an opportunity for rising 7th graders to experience what it would be like if they decided to enroll next year.  Our ASP has clubs, that range from cooking to gaming to fitness, etc.  These clubs are included within the ASP so there is no extra registration necessary.

Parents will need to fill out a Participation Contract & Registration Form, which can be obtained by coming into the Teen Center or contacting us via email.

Rocco's Dining for Dollars Fundraiser

Tuesday, May 10 @ 4-9 p.m.

Help us raise money for FSES while getting a night off from cooking. Order dinner (online, via phone or in person) from Rocco's and they will donate 20% of FSES sales to the PTA. Every order makes a difference and it's such a simple way to raise money for the school. You must mention FSES in order for us to receive credit.

Spring Fling & Raffle

Friday, May 13 @ 6-8 p.m.

Bring your own chairs, dinner and lawn games, and join us on school grounds for some DJ music and fun. We'll have an ice cream truck where you can purchase after-dinner treats. We'll also have a raffle to win a Hangout Hideaway Clubhouse (~$1,000 value; pick up and assembly required). Raffle tickets will be 1 for $5 or 5 for $20. It's a free event and all are welcome.

Supplies Needed for Spring "Green" Art Project

Ms. Adams has requested a few items to help complete the bottle cap art project. Please contact Adrienne Dreyfuss if you can donate one of these items:

  • Wood screws (1 inch - zinc plated if possible) - need lots of them
  • An electric screwdriver/drill to borrow

Colored and black plastic caps (no white or clear) can continue to be dropped off in the lobby or to Ms. Adams.

Fall Volunteers for Girls on the Run Needed

We'd really love to offer Girls on the Run at FSES as an after-school activity this fall but need one liaison and two coaches to do so (the liaison can also be a coach). Girls on the Run is a 10-week program for 3rd-6th grade girls. Lessons emphasize the important connection between physical and emotional health. The girls meet twice a week for 60-90 minutes, and the program culminates with the completion of a service project and a celebratory 5K. Coaches will undergo a background check and need to attend a new coach training and lesson demo. The liaison provides logistical support for the program. Please contact Adrienne Dreyfuss for more information.

Meet Dr. Reid

On Tuesday, May 17 at 7 p.m., incoming superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will join staff, families, and students for a multilingual virtual town hall. Watch your email and upcoming issues of FCPS This Week for more details, including how to register. Dr. Reid will be hosting additional engagement sessions throughout the county after her official start date on July 1.

Dr. Reid held an in-person town hall May 3 that can be viewed on the FCPS YouTube Channel.

Virtual Book Fair

The Virtual Book Fair will remain open till the end of the school year.  Purchases benefit our FSES library.  Be sure to check out our teacher wish lists. What better way to thank your child's classroom teacher than with a book or two from her/his wishlist. You may also purchase books or make a money donation to Homestretch, serving parents and children experiencing homelessness at this time in our community.
