Virtual Meet Me at the Library, May 25

Mark your calendar! Our next Virtual Meet Me at the Library event will be Wednesday, May 25th at 5:30pm

Kings Park is proud to partner with WETA to bring back the amazing Meet Me at the Library program.  This program is a great opportunity for families to log in, listen to stories, play some games, and do an activity to promote literacy skills and explore some fun topics.   On May 25th, families are invited to log in to Zoom at 5:30 PM for an hour-long session focusing on Reading Skills with Super Why with some amazing Kings Park teachers and staff.  A Zoom link will be provided closer to the event.  Every student that participates will receive a free book from WETA (which will be delivered within a week of the evening session).   We hope to see you online May 25th at 5:30pm!

Kiss and Ride Safety Reminder

Kings Park ES has an established area called the Kiss & Ride, which is designed as a safe place for adults in private vehicles to load and unload children.  With the cooperation of all drivers, the Kiss and Ride is able to provide an efficient and safe transfer of children. To ensure safety for everyone, observe the following rules when loading and unloading children:

  • Teach children how to buckle and unbuckle seatbelts so they can do it themselves.
  • Cell phone use prohibited to ensure student safety.
  • Practice so that children can open and close the car door independently.
  • Seat children so they may enter/exit the vehicle easily.
  • Load and unload from the passenger side of the car only.
  • Designate a place in your vehicle where children’s belongings can be positioned for easy access when loading.
  • Say “good-byes” as you approach the unloading area.
  • Remain in the driver’s seat unless assisting your child with bulky items.
  • Vehicles equipped with child protection locks may require assistance for your child to exit the vehicle.
  • If assistance is needed, please roll down your window and ask the teacher on duty.
  • Pull forward as far as possible into the designated Kiss & Ride lane before loading or unloading.
  • Load and unload in the Kiss & Ride area only.
  • Children may not load/unload items from the trunk/rear compartment of the vehicle.
  • Parking in the parking lot and calling to children to cross between cars is not permitted.
  • Parking in the Kiss & Ride lane and leaving your car unattended is not permitted.
  • Follow the directions and the guidance of the teacher on duty.
  • Be kind and helpful to staff on duty.
  • Remember the speed limit on school grounds is 5 mph.
  • Allow additional time on rainy or snowy days.
  • Make sure you and your student know their teacher’s name.

Standards of Learning (SOL)

The 3rd Grade SOLs are here (see schedule below). It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time-period. It is also important that your child have a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing. All SOL testing will start promptly after arrival.

More Information about the SOLs can be found by following the link.  https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/sol-assessments

If you have questions about the SOLs please feel free to contact your children’s teacher or one of our Test Coordinators: Beth Beavers and Maura Donahue.

Updated Isolation Procedures for FCPS Students Effective May 1

Since the start of the pandemic, Fairfax County Public Schools has regularly reviewed and adjusted our health and safety guidance in alignment with recommendations from local, state and national health experts.

As a result, FCPS will be changing current isolation procedures for students who have tested positive for COVID-19. Beginning May 1, 2022, your child may return to in-person instruction and activities, including athletics, when your child has met the following criteria:

  • Student has completed at least five days of isolation; AND
  • Student is fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication; AND
  • Student’s symptoms have improved or resolved
  • Student wears a well-fitting mask for 5 additional days (day six through day 10) after the end of the 5-day isolation period, in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance

If students are unable to wear a mask when around others, they are to continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home.

Children who are in isolation will continue to have access to our StreamIn/CheckIn during this time.

The new procedure aligns with the timeline recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD). It also follows improving vaccination rates in the Fairfax Health District, as well as a continued community level of low in Fairfax County.

We continue to balance the need for students to have a high-quality in-person learning experience with student and staff safety. By adhering to our layered prevention strategies and increasing vaccination rates, we are all doing our part to keep schools safe.

FCPS Cares

FCPS CARES is an opportunity for staff, parents, students, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others. Every month, a nominated employee from each region and Central Offices will be recognized as an FCPS CARES of the Month recipient. We’ll share their names in Employee News, and they will also have access to a new FCPS CARES banner for their profile photo in Outlook. Watch this video to learn more about FCPS CARES. We also encourage you to acknowledge a staff member who has gone above and beyond!  We love our KPES staff members, let's tell them how we feel!
