💻Supporting your child in the Digital World🌐

google workspace

Dear Families,

As you know, our students all have access to a school Google account - called Google Workspace for Education. Google Workspace allows our students to communicate, collaborate, and store files related to school. This account also has certain safeguards in place that only allow certain features of Google. For example, they can not use Google Chat and they can only email and share documents with others in Fairfax County. You can learn more about Google Workspace for Education HERE.

We wanted to let you know that we are aware that some of our 5th grade students have created personal Google accounts and have been accessing them on their school computers. Using these personal accounts, there have been chats happening between students. We cannot identify all students who have been a part of these chats, as not all of their emails include their names. We have talked with students about why they should not be accessing personal Google accounts on their school devices and emphasized that the restrictions on their Google Workspace for Education account helps keep them safe. Luckily, FCPS has recently changed their browser restrictions and no longer allows for students to login to their personal Google accounts on their FCPS device. However, they could still access these accounts on personal devices.

We hope you take this opportunity to talk with your child about whether or not they have created a personal Google account and discuss the importance

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our School Based Technology Specialist, Leslie Leisey, at lfleisey@fcps.edu

Thank you!

Supporting Your Child

Now more than ever, it is extremely important for us to partner with families to help our children stay safe online.  If we can work together, we can help our children navigate the digital world safely as they learn to be more independent users of technology.

We wanted to make sure you were aware of a variety of resources that are available to you from the FCPS website

In addition, our School Based Technology Specialist will be at next week’s Principal Q&A on May 12 starting at 6:30 pm sharing some tips for supporting your child and their use of technology!
