May 2022 Newsletter

Dear Dranesville Families,

This is Teacher Appreciation Week.  Please give our teachers and school staff all of the accolades they deserve.  They have worked hard all year to make this year back in school productive for our students. Their efforts to help our kids transition emotionally and socially have helped everyone achieve academically.

A special thanks to all the schools for hosting my visits in classrooms, at special events, and award ceremonies.  See the fun photos below. I am always so happy to see the work our students are doing and hear from them and staff as to how I can best support them.

Our Dranesville High Schools have, for another year, made the lists of national and state high schools excelling in student achievement, challenging work and graduation rates. We should be proud of the work our students are doing and the work of our school based staff.  The support they receive from our central office and other district staff is also essential to meeting the criteria for these acknowledgements.

It is an exciting time as Dr. Michelle Reid begins her transition to work for FCPS as of July 1.  She graciously met with staff and held an in-person town hall meeting with families this week.  See the link below to watch this town hall.  She will hold a virtual town hall on May 17 and return for a short visit in June. We look forward to her full start in July.

We are finishing up our budget work over the next month, and next week will be voting on some changes to the Student Rights and Responsibilities document.  I hope you participated in the feedback meetings this week. You can watch these meetings here soon.  Some of the items being added address cell phone use and cyberbullying.

With the few weeks left of this school year, please enjoy the upcoming Proms and other activities.  Be safe and remember the importance of our COVID mitigation measures.

See you out at the schools.  Great Falls, Forestville and Colvin Run–I’ll see you on the golf course!

COVID

Fairfax County transitioned from low to medium COVID-19 Community Level

From the Fairfax County Emergency Information- For several weeks, cases and outbreaks of COVID-19 have increased in Fairfax County and across Northern Virginia. Several jurisdictions in the region have transitioned from low to medium COVID-19 Community Level, as defined by CDC, including Fairfax County and Falls Church City. Fairfax City remains at a low level. Outbreaks in schools, primarily the elementary grades, have increased rapidly. Last week, there were 74 classrooms that reported outbreaks of COVID-19 cases and this week there were 139. These figures include outbreaks that occurred in both public and private schools, as well as at childcare facilities. An outbreak is defined as a cluster of three or more cases of COVID-19 illness in a group within a 14-day period. Read more here.

Please keep your sick students home

Please make sure you health screen your child before sending them to school.  FCPS will not be offering the weekly COVID screening testing. If your child does not feel well or presents with any COVID-like symptoms, please keep them at home and seek medical advice.   For parent convenience, click here for the Daily Health Questionnaire. We appreciate your support in keeping our FCPS community healthy!

VaxUp

We continue to encourage everyone to get vaccinated or boosted as soon as they are eligible. COVID-19 vaccination keeps children safely in school and childcare settings, and also while participating in sports, playdates, extracurricular activities, and other group activities. Strong community vaccination rates help keep our schools safe for in-person learning. To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine or find a vaccine provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website.

Updated Isolation Procedures

FCPS will be changing current isolation procedures for students who have tested positive for COVID-19. Beginning May 1, 2022, students may return to in-person instruction and activities, including athletics, after at least five (5) days of isolation when meeting ALL of the following criteria:

If students are unable to wear a mask when around others, they are to continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home. Children who are in isolation will continue to have access to StreamIn/CheckIn during this time.

The new procedure aligns with the timeline recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD).

Masking

While not required, wearing a mask while indoors is still considered an important way to protect yourself and others. Families are encouraged to discuss mask wearing as an additional layered prevention strategy.

Additional recommendations to prevent COVID-19 are available online

From Supervisor Foust's newsletter- COVID-19 Update

Over the past two weeks cases of COVID-19 have risen by 62% in the Fairfax Health District.

The BA.2 variant is now causing most COVID-19 infections in the United States. While there is no evidence that BA.2 results in more severe disease compared to other variants, it is more transmissible as shown by the increase in cases and outbreaks in recent weeks. Additionally, the virus that causes COVID-19 continues to mutate with subvariant BA.2.12 identified first in New York state and now seen nationwide.
