CWES Weekly Happenings

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families,

Each year I marvel at our teachers and their capacity to care for our students and families. And then, during Teacher Appreciation Week especially, I marvel at our students and families and their capacity to care for our teachers.

Today marked the beginning of my favorite week of the year -- a week during which I love to shower CWES teachers with gratitude for all they do for our school. And every year I am thrilled when my shower of gratitude pales in comparison to the flood of love that comes their way from the students and families themselves.

Today's chalked messages, thank you notes and small tokens of affection from your children put smiles on teachers' faces and a skip in their steps. Thank you for encouraging your children to do what they do best -- reminding teachers of all the reasons they do what they do -- because they love to make a difference in the lives of your children.

Today I shared the Starfish Story with teachers, and thought you might enjoy it too.

Keep up the great work you're doing to appreciate these dedicated professionals! It's only Monday, after all!

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, Dr. L

Woodson HS Grad Walk, May 25

A beloved pre-pandemic tradition is making a welcome comeback this year. Woodson High School Seniors who attended Canterbury Woods in their elementary years are invited to process through the halls of CWES and be cheered on by staff and students alike!

On Wednesday, May 25, our staff and students will line the hallways to celebrate these accomplished young men and women as they complete their K-12 education!

Seniors should meet outside Door 1 in caps and gowns at 2:15 PM. Parents of graduating seniors are welcome to come take pictures of this special event.

Updated COVID Isolation Procedures Effective May 1

Since the start of the pandemic, Fairfax County Public Schools has regularly reviewed and adjusted our health and safety guidance in alignment with recommendations from local, state and national health experts.

As a result, FCPS has changed current isolation procedures for students who have tested positive for COVID-19. Beginning May 1, 2022, your child may return to in-person instruction and activities, including athletics, when your child has met the following criteria:

  • Student has completed at least five days of isolation; AND
  • Student is fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication; AND
  • Student’s symptoms have improved or resolved
  • Student wears a well-fitting mask for 5 additional days (day six through day 10) after the end of the 5-day isolation period, in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance

If students are unable to wear a mask when around others, they are to continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home.

Children who are in isolation will continue to have access to our StreamIn/CheckIn during this time.

The new procedure aligns with the timeline recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD). It also follows improving vaccination rates in the Fairfax Health District, as well as a continued community level of low in Fairfax County.

We continue to balance the need for students to have a high-quality in-person learning experience with student and staff safety. By adhering to our layered prevention strategies and increasing vaccination rates, we are all doing our part to keep schools safe
