Students are engaging in enrichment activities during after school clubs!
Bucknell families,
This week was Staff Appreciation Week! The PTA showered our staff with a balloon arc, created a Bulldog Hall of Fame with staff's pictures, and left sweet treats in our mailboxes all week long! Staff then ended the week with an ice cream bar! We've enjoyed the royal treatment and we're so grateful for such a supportive PTA!
This week was also the first week of After School Clubs! More than 70% of our students stayed after school to join a club of their choice. Students got a healthy snack immediately after school and then their club sponsors lead them to various classrooms to engage in enrichment activities such as robotics, art, dance, and even flag football! Thank you to our staff who are volunteering their expertise and time to ensure that clubs are successful!
Lastly, our Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments also started this week. We have completed Reading testing for grades 3 - 6 and will begin Math testing next week. We are so proud of how students are engaging in the assessment to ensure their best work. Please continue to encourage your child to get a good night's rest and to do their best!
Sincerely,
Rashida Green, Principal
Tory Swanson, Assistant Principal

This is a great opportunity to build relationships with students at Bucknell Elementary, while also seeing your child during the school day. In addition, you will be supporting our cafeteria host and head custodian. You will ensure that students stay in their designated seats while at lunch and that they’re being safe.

Your Input: Next Year's Student Placement
It's hard to believe that the end of the year is almost here and that we are already planning for the 22-23 school year. Each year our teachers work together to create classrooms built on the idea that students learn form each others' strengths. This mindset is a driving force as we build heterogenous classrooms that support each child's learning needs.
Again this year, we ask for your input about the learning environment your child will learn best in next year. Please consider providing your input by clicking this link by Monday, May 9th, so that the information can be processed before class building.
Please note that we do not take direct teacher requests. Instead, we ask that you describe the attributes that will support your child best.
Reminder: Stay Home When Sick

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) continues to monitor cases and report COVID-19 outbreaks, as outlined by the Virginia Department of Health. Currently, Fairfax County's Community Level remains low as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our layered prevention strategies are being implemented based on our COVID-19 Community Level, as recommended by the CDC.
However, FCPS has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks and parents/legal guardians are reminded of the daily health screening requirement to check their students for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. Parents and guardians are advised to keep their students home if sick and get them tested to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
VaxUp
We continue to encourage everyone to get vaccinated or boosted as soon as they are eligible. COVID-19 vaccination keeps children safely in school and childcare settings, and also while participating in sports, playdates, extracurricular activities, and other group activities. Strong community vaccination rates help keep our schools safe for in-person learning. To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine, or to find a vaccine provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website.
Masking
As a reminder, students may return to school after five days of isolation if they are fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication) and symptoms are improving. As recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) individuals should continue to wear a well-fitting mask around others at home and in public for five additional days (day six through day 10) after the end of the five day isolation period. If individuals are unable to wear a mask when around others, they should continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home. While not required, wearing a mask while indoors is still considered an important way to protect yourself and others. Families are encouraged to discuss mask wearing as an additional layered prevention strategy.
Additional recommendations to prevent COVID-19 are available online.
COVID Vaccination Status
You may wish to voluntarily share your child’s COVID-19 vaccination information. However, we do not require your child’s vaccination information and no school employee will ask for your child’s vaccination status. The only exception is student-athletes, who are required to share their vaccination status to participate in their sport or activity.
If you would like to provide us with your child’s vaccination status, please bring your child’s COVID-19 vaccination card or a photocopy of the card to Ms. Bowles, our student registrar in the main office.

Absences and late arrivals should be reported to the office as classes start promptly at 8:55 a.m.
Bucknell ES front doors open at 8:45 and closes at 8:55AM. A child who arrives to school after 8:55 a.m. is considered tardy. If you know ahead of time that your child is going to be late or absent for the entire day, please call the school attendance line (703-660-2929) before 8:55 a.m. If the school does not receive a call from the family, the absence/tardy will automatically be considered unexcused.
Please call before 3:10 p.m. if you plan to pick up your child early from school. It is imperative that the front office staff has enough time to get the students from their classroom before dismissal begins. It is also helpful if you email your child's teacher so they are aware and able to get the student ready for an early dismissal.
