Mount Vernon District Updates

Meet The Incoming Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid

Dear FCPS Families, Community and Employees,

I want to ensure you are aware of upcoming opportunities to meet our incoming superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid.

On April 16, the Fairfax County School Board voted 9-3 to appoint Michelle Reid, Ed.D. as the next superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools. Dr. Michelle Reid, our incoming superintendent, will be visiting FCPS this week. We are inviting our parents/caregivers, students, and employees to join Dr. Reid on Tuesday, May 3, at 7-8:30 p.m., for an in-person event at Annandale High School

Please register to attend, as seating capacity will be limited. Language interpretation will be available.

Dr. Reid will also connect with families and employees at a virtual town hall on Tuesday, May 17, from 7-8 p.m., via Zoom. Registration for that event will open soon.

There will be additional engagement opportunities throughout the county, after Dr. Reid officially begins her role as superintendent. In the interim, we hope to see you tonight, Tuesday, May 3. Please visit the FCPS website to register.

Please Remember to Thank Our Teachers!

There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think fondly of a teacher that touched my life growing up.  These memories include lessons taught in the classroom, kind words expressed to me or a classmate and the mentoring they provided, helping navigate the college admissions process.  This week, May 2-6, marks Teacher Appreciation Week! I wish all of the teachers of Fairfax County, a wonderful Teacher Appreciation week for your dedication and continuous genuine support with our students.

Please take the opportunity to thank an educator that has touched you or your student’s life this week.

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)

Regulation 2601, The Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R), is currently under annual review. Proposed changes for the 2022-2023 SR&R are described in the staff presentation that was discussed at the Board’s work session on April 26th.  Please review the draft and let me know if you have any concerns.  Action by the Board is scheduled for May 12th.

Local Special Education Annual Plan

Updated Isolation Procedures

FCPS changed its isolation procedures for students who have tested positive for COVID-19. Beginning May 1, 2022, students may return to in-person instruction and activities, including athletics, after at least five (5) days of isolation when meeting ALL of the following criteria:

If students are unable to wear a mask when around others, they are to continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home.

Children who are in isolation will continue to have access to StreamIn/CheckIn during this time.

The new procedure aligns with the timeline recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD).
