Message from Ms. Kearns

Dear Lake Braddock Families,

This week was deemed Teacher Appreciation Week and we had the pleasure of celebrating the hard work and dedication of our teachers and staff members. Our teachers are committed to developing young minds and ensuring our students have opportunities to feel connected to another, can adapt and be resilient  when facing unforeseen challenges and have a desire to be an engaged learner and active member of our community.  We are so proud of the work from our teachers and the support they provide to our students every day.  We concluded the week of celebrations by honoring our cafeteria workers as being “Superheroes”.  It takes a village of committed and enthusiastic individuals to run a school and we are proud to work alongside such a great community of caring professionals.

We had a great first week of testing and look forward to another successful week of our end of year assessments. Please remind your students to update their laptop this weekend so they are charged and ready to go.

We hope everyone has a wonderful and dry weekend and an early Happy Mother’s day to all the moms in the Lake Braddock community.

Go Bruins Nation!

Lindsey Kearns

UPDATE-SOL Testing and Bell Schedule

SOL and AP testing will occur throughout the building this May. We are adjusting the SOL testing block on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through May 18 to end at 10:30 due to technical issues we are having with student computers. Second chance breakfast will not be offered on the days when the bell schedule has been modified for testing. An updated calendar and bell schedule can be found on the LBSS SOL Testing website, under the first drop down menu. Please make sure your students are completing the FCPS laptop updates as instructed during Advisory periods. Please try to avoid scheduling your students for appointments during their testing times as there is not much availability for make-up testing.

Students need to bring their FCPS laptops, fully charged to SOL testing. VDOE does not allow for students to take SOL tests on personal devices. As per the testing electronic device policy, students are not permitted to have cell phones, smart watches, and any Bluetooth or internet connected devices (such as earbuds) on them during testing. If they are found to have such devices, it is considered cheating and they will receive a score of zero on the SOL test and not be permitted to test again this spring.

School Lunch Hero Day May 6!

Between preparing healthy meals for America’s students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, school nutrition professionals are true heroes.

On Friday, May 6, 2022, we will celebrate the 10th Annual School Lunch Hero Day! School Lunch Hero Day is a chance to showcase the difference school nutrition professionals make for every child who comes through the cafeteria. --School Nutrition Association.

Please see here for more information!

asian

Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Month

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month.   "A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).  The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants."  Please see this website for more information!

jewish

Celebrate Jewish American Month

"May is Jewish American Heritage Month.  The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Jewish Americans who helped form the fabric of American history, culture and society."  Please see this website for more information!

Updates from the Substance Abuse Specialist

Current Trends to be Aware of:

The opioid epidemic continues to impact the Northern Virginia region and the nation. Just last week, two youth fatally overdosed in Prince William County after taking what preliminarily appear to be fentanyl-laced Percocets (official causes of death are pending toxicology results). Please learn more and help share this information widely.

Opioids: Learn How to Help and Prevent Overdoses

https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/news/opioids-learn-how-get-help-and-prevent-overdoses

FREE Training through the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board: REVIVE! trains individuals on what to do and not do in an overdose situation, how to administer naloxone, and what to do afterwards. Each attendee also receives a free REVIVE! kit, which includes all the supplies needed to administer naloxone.

COVID Information

For the most up-to-date information, please see the FCPS website for Health and Safety Guidance Document and COVID-19 Testing.

FCPS COVID Updates

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) continues to monitor cases and report COVID-19 outbreaks, as outlined by the Virginia Department of Health. Currently, Fairfax County's Community Level remains low as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our layered prevention strategies are being implemented based on our COVID-19 Community Level, as recommended by the CDC.

However, FCPS has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks and parents/legal guardians are reminded of the daily health screening requirement to check their students for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. Parents and guardians are advised to keep their students home if sick and get them tested to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

VaxUp
We continue to encourage everyone to get vaccinated or boosted as soon as they are eligible. COVID-19 vaccination keeps children safely in school and childcare settings, and also while participating in sports, playdates, extracurricular activities, and other group activities. Strong community vaccination rates help keep our schools safe for in-person learning. To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine, or to find a vaccine provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website.

Masking
As a reminder, students may return to school after five days of isolation if they are fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication) and symptoms are improving. As recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) individuals should continue to wear a well-fitting mask around others at home and in public for five additional days (day six through day 10) after the end of the five day isolation period. If individuals are unable to wear a mask when around others, they should continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home. While not required, wearing a mask while indoors is still considered an important way to protect yourself and others. Families are encouraged to discuss mask wearing as an additional layered prevention strategy.

Additional recommendations to prevent COVID-19 are available online.

Sports Physical Night-Request for Help!

We are looking for medical practitioners (MDs, DOs, LNPs, and PAs) that are interested in volunteering for our annual Sports Physical Night event! We need professionals willing and able to sign off on a student’s readiness to participate in athletics. If you’ve never seen how this event works, it has a production line-like setup. Students first complete a multi-station screening process which includes anthropometric measurements, blood pressure/pulse and vision (these stations are typically supervised by ATs, RNs, EMTs and PTs). Once the initial screening stations are complete, the student proceeds to the exam station where an MD, DO, LNP or PA will review their medical history as well as the results of the previously completed stations before conducting any medical/musculoskeletal evaluations deemed necessary to sign off on the student’s medical eligibility status.

This event serves as our main source of fundraising to replenish sports medicine supplies for the year and offer our athletes the best possible care. If you are an MD, DO, LNP, or PA, please consider donating your time and expertise to support a key component of Lake Braddock’s Athletic Training Program. We understand that health and safety are still a concern, so if there are any suggestions/stipulations you may have to make this work, don’t hesitate to share. We are willing to accommodate as best we can! If you know a practitioner who could help us out, please pass along this message and the signup link below!!

How to Stay In Touch

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:

Attendance Lines

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Procedures for Picking Up a Student Early

  • Prior to 8:00 a.m., the student must present a note from the parent to their subschool office. Notes must include time of dismissal, reason for leaving, and a contact number. Parents of middle school students must also include the name of the person picking the student up. Please note that this person must be listed as an emergency contact. At the time of early check-out, middle school parents must come in Entrance 1 and meet their student at the security desk. Anyone picking up a middle school student must bring a photo ID with them. High school parents may pick up students outside Entrance 1.
  • Notes are strongly preferred for early check-out, but if a parent is unable to send a note with the student, the parent should call the subschool office as early as possible. All calls will be confirmed by callback to a phone number on the emergency care card. Regrettably, if the parent did not send a note with the student, the parent will be required to park, come into the school to furnish a note, and pick up the student. Without advance notice provided by a note, there may be a wait until our staff is able to locate the student, particularly if the student is at lunch or in a physical education class. We further regret that without advance notice, we are unable to accommodate requests for early dismissal after 2:15 pm.
  • In either case, students must check out at the subschool office when leaving school and check in with the security desk upon return. Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action (if returning to school, students are also subject to search). Students must contact all teachers of any class to be missed.

Read our full Attendance procedures at our website.

Late Bus Information

Late bus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Buses will pick up students in the front of the building with a departure time of approximately 4:45 pm.  Please check  StudentVue and ParentVue for your student's late bus number and stop. If you have any questions, please contact your student's appropriate subschool.
