Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

It was an exciting week for our students and staff, with field trips to Jamestown, Marshall HS for a play, a trip to Riverbend Park, and another middle school visit for our rising 7th graders!  Next week is one of our most special weeks of the year: Teacher and Staff Appreciation. We are so fortunate to witness daily the dedication, passion, and efforts our staff pours into serving your children. We look forward to honoring them next week and also would like to thank the efforts of our PTA and the community for demonstrating your appreciation and support. Please take a moment with your child this weekend to talk about how your family might display your appreciation for their hard work this school year!

Next week will also be the beginning of SOL testing for our 3rd-6th grade students. Please reference the schedule below and make sure your child comes to school on time these days, with a good night’s sleep and a can do attitude.  We are proud of all they have learned this year and know these assessments are an opportunity to showcase that hard work this school year.

Today is the last day for our rising 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students to submit the Band/Strings enrollment form.  We need a response from EVERY family, even if your child did not select to participate in these music opportunities.  Additionally, we are quickly approaching the deadline for the Class Placement Input Form for next year, so please take some time to complete so we can make the best placement decisions for your child next year.

On a final note, the FCPS Transportation department is anticipating major bus delays all day on Monday, May 2nd.  If you have the ability to walk, carpool, or utilize KNR on this date, it will help make sure your child gets to school on time and is returned home in a timely manner.  If your child normally uses the bus, thank you for your consideration in using alternate transportation on this day.

Class Placement Input Form for 2022-23

If your child is returning to Stenwood next school year, we offer you the opportunity to share any comments you would like regarding class placements. If you know that your family will not be joining us for the 2022-23 school year, please reach out to Mrs. Hunt, snhunt@fcps.edu or 703-208-7600 to let us know.

Our staff will be working on tentative class groupings this spring, with classroom assignments finalized in late August. As we make these placements, we consider many factors including individual student information, teacher input, and social relationships. Every class will have a blend of children with diverse needs, personalities, and learning interests. Due to the many factors we must consider in creating classroom placements, including the reassignment of some teachers to a different grade level and the hiring of new teachers, requests for a specific teacher cannot be honored.

If you have information that you believe is pertinent to your child’s placement for next year, please complete the optional Class Placement Input Form by Wednesday, May 4th for it to be taken into consideration. There is no need to complete the form if you do not have any information you would like us to consider. Thank you.

Band/Strings Enrollment for All Rising 4th/5th/6th Graders- Due TODAY, Friday, 4/29!

Please take a few minutes to fill out your child’s choice for next school year – those with multiple children in 4th, 5th and 6th grade next year will need to fill out a separate form for each student.

The 2022-2023 Band/Strings Enrollment Form is now open! https://forms.gle/wBTkW62XHbR6pMGz7

Please complete the form by Friday, April 29th.

As a reminder, ALL students currently in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade are required to fill out the Band/Strings Enrollment Form. Your child’s weekly Specials schedule will include General Music, PE, and Art. In addition to all other Specials, students who choose to play an instrument will also have Band or Strings class once a week.  Our school will not be able to plan for your child’s Specials schedule until your selection is made.

Music store information, instrument rental information and supply lists will be sent home after all students have submitted their selection. If you have any questions about the Strings or Band Programs here at Stenwood, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Stay tuned for more,

This week, we are focusing on Leadership. You value each member of your group and inspire other people to do their best.

"Leadership is practiced not so much in words as in attitude and actions.”

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • What are some of the characteristics of a good leader?
  • Do you consider yourself a leader? If not, what are some characteristics that might make that more possible? If so, what are the characteristics of leadership you need to build on to make stronger?
  • How does it make you feel to think about yourself as a leader?
