A Message From Principal Lemmon

Dear Families,

Earlier this week, administration was made aware of several students who were firing BB guns at each other at a bus stop. These students then brought the BB guns into school in their backpacks. We interviewed the students, searched their backpacks, and found four BB guns in their possession. No one was hurt by the BB guns and we do not believe any other students were involved.

Appropriate disciplinary action has been taken as a result of this incident. Any violations that jeopardize the safety of students at Bailey’s Upper ES will result in consequences as outlined in our Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Please know that the safety of our students is our number one priority and we ask you to be our partners in keeping our schools a safe place to learn.

This is the second time this year that a student has brought a BB gun to school. Please talk to your students about the serious nature of these incidents. Help them to understand that BB guns are NOT toys. BB guns can cause serious injuries, especially to young children.

Please also remind your students that they should speak to you, or a trusted adult anytime they see others acting in an unsafe way. We are here to help them and they should never be afraid to speak out.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please reach out to me.

Regards,

Marie Lemmon

Principal

Opportunities to Engage with Dr. Reid

Over the next few months, there will be multiple opportunities for staff, families, and students to learn more about Dr. Reid. Please share the following information with your staff and families.

Our incoming superintendent, Dr. Michelle Reid, is visiting FCPS next week to learn more about our schools and community. During her visit, there will be a special, in-person event for staff, families, and students on Tuesday, May 3, starting at 7 p.m. More details, including how to register and submit questions, will be shared with you directly via email in the coming days.

On Tuesday, May 17, Dr. Reid will join staff, families, and students for a multilingual virtual town hall, starting at 7 p.m. We will share details about this event in newsletters and directly via email.

Outdoor Dining Returns

Next week outdoor dining returns to Bailey's Upper. We introduced our outdoor dining area for lunch in the fall and it was a great success!  Each class is assigned one day a week to eat at this location. As a reminder due to the widely fluctuating temperatures, be sure to ask your child what day they are assigned so that they can dress accordingly.  If there is inclement weather, students will eat at their normal location in the café.

Updated Isolation Procedures for Students Effective May 1st

Since the start of the pandemic, Fairfax County Public Schools has regularly reviewed and adjusted our health and safety guidance in alignment with recommendations from local, state and national health experts.

As a result, FCPS will be changing current isolation procedures for students who have tested positive for COVID-19. Beginning May 1, 2022, your child may return to in-person instruction and activities, including athletics, when your child has met the following criteria:

  • Student has completed at least five days of isolation; AND
  • Student is fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication; AND
  • Student’s symptoms have improved or resolved
  • Student wears a well-fitting mask for 5 additional days (day six through day 10) after the end of the 5-day isolation period, in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance

If students are unable to wear a mask when around others, they are to continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home.

Children who are in isolation will continue to have access to our StreamIn/CheckIn during this time.

The new procedure aligns with the timeline recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD). It also follows improving vaccination rates in the Fairfax Health District, as well as a continued community level of low in Fairfax County.

We continue to balance the need for students to have a high-quality in-person learning experience with student and staff safety. By adhering to our layered prevention strategies and increasing vaccination rates, we are all doing our part to keep schools safe.

Reader's Corner

Students

All library books are due May 27th

Please help your students keep track of their library books so they will be able to return them

If your student sometimes loses or misplaces their library books, please encourage them to keep their books in a safe place, such as in their backpacks, or even leave them at school so they are able to return them when due. We want all of our students to be able to continue to borrow and enjoy all of our books.

Thank you for your help!
