Dear KJMS Families,

What a busy week! In honor of Autism Awareness, one of our students asked if we could all wear red to show our support. See the picture above for some of the staff that wanted to show their support!

This week, we also had our first round of SOL testing with math tests. Our students did amazing work, so much so that we had to extend the test session to allow more time for diligent workers to finish! In a school of more the 1000 students, only FOUR students needed to borrow laptops. That is largely due to friendly reminders at school and at home to be prepared. We thank you for sending them to school ready to test! Next week, 8th graders will take the Science SOL on Wednesday, May 4. To make sure testing locations are secure, please do not withdraw students early on test days. For planning, the 7th and 8th grade Reading SOLs will be on Thursday, May 12. In addition, we have planned make-up test days. If your student doesn’t feel well, please keep them at home; they can make up the test at a later date.

We were very proud of how hard students worked and how ready they were to test. We asked all students to walk to their test locations early, and we were impressed with how quickly they arrived. The teachers noted how this set a relaxed tone for testing. We plan to continue to ask students to go directly to class every morning for the remainder of the year. Rather than walking around the building until 7:30, we will ask all students to walk directly to class from buses and the main lobby. We plan to set up breakfast stations around the building for grab and go breakfast. We think this will help students focus and be ready for instruction.

7th graders! We hope you are all ready for the MeWEE Science field trips next week. Field trips will be held even if it is raining. They will only be canceled if there is severe weather. Please check the weather and send your student in the appropriate clothing.

In closing, next week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. At KJMS, we like to take this week to honor all staff. If you would like to support our appreciation week next week, please feel free to drop off gift cards to your favorite store or restaurant, a small gift you think one of them would enjoy from our daily drawings, or a baked good. Our teachers know your partnership is the reason that working at KJMS is a great place to be!

Have a wonderful weekend!!

Additionally, students who fail any of their SOL tests by a narrow margin will be given the opportunity to retest with parent permission.  In order to facilitate SOL retakes we need to know ahead of time if you give your child permission to retest in the event that they score between 375-399.

Please fill out this Retest Permission Form and send it to school by May 13, 2022.  Please fill out a separate form for each student you have at Katherine Johnson MS.  A decision not to allow retesting will not impact your child’s course grade or academic record.

Please contact the school's Testing Coordinator, Griselda Mendoza, at gmendoza@fcps.edu with any questions or concerns.

En Pocas Palabras graphic

Making the move from elementary school to middle school can be both an exciting and unsettling time for a parent and student. In this week’s podcast, hear ways to ease the transition by:

  • Understanding the developmental changes in your child.
  • Getting to know middle school culture.
  • Encouraging independence, but remaining available.
  • Offering emotional support to your child.
  • Reiterating your family values and expectations.
  • Staying involved in your child’s school.

This podcast’s infomercial is about summer camps. It’s not too early to start thinking about summer fun. The FCPS Tech Adventure Camp and the Career and Technical Education Camp are taking registrations for summer 2022.
