1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Good afternoon, Woodson Families!

It was a beautiful morning to close out Autism Awareness Month with a Pep Rally in the stadium. Student leaders engaged faculty and the four classes in a variety of games.  Ms. Duarte (formerly Dragan) and Ms. Barry won the tandem bike race, it was neck and neck but they pulled it out in the end!

Join us this weekend for a doubleheader of events tomorrow. Woodson’s annual 5K will kick off at 8am and then FanQuest will start with a tailgate at 5:30pm and the basketball game at 7pm versus Robinson.  Also this weekend is Move for Mental Health on Sunday, May 1st at 10:30am at Mason District Park.

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week! Please feel free to send a thank you message to your child’s teachers to make them smile and energize their days.

On Tuesday, May 3rd, we celebrate our seniors with sharing their post-graduation plans. Celebrate Your Plan Day formerly known as Balloon Day has been a Woodson tradition for many years. Seniors post paper balloons with their plans on the windows in the Auditorium Lobby where they will be on display until after graduation.

The PTSO is still looking for volunteers for the All Night Graduation Party – Cav Cruise. Please view this SignUpGenius to share your time and help our seniors celebrate their big day.

A big thank you to the 30 or so teachers who are piloting the eHall Pass program. We have a free trial to try this program and see if we want to purchase it for next year. We will ask for feedback in May.

The program allows students to sign out from class electronically to go to a specific location, restroom, office, counselor, etc. This ensures we know exactly who is where in the building and when they are there. Our goal is to enhance student safety and increase time in class. We have increased our presence in and around restrooms to also discourage inappropriate behaviors.  With over 2400 students in the school, we must do everything we can to enhance security as our students are your children and we take our responsibility for them seriously. Anything we can to do enhance security is worth looking at, hence the eHall Pass pilot. We will demonstrate the eHall Pass program at an upcoming PTSO or parent meeting - more information to come.

Looking forward to a beautiful morning tomorrow for the 5k!  Enjoy the weekend, Cavs!

Dr. Floyd

Broadcast Journalism

The Broadcast Journalism students visited the FCPS television production studio during the live filming of "Meet the Author." Students were allowed to operate the large crane camera and enjoyed touring master control.

3. FanQuest on April 30th!

Join us tomorrow, Saturday, April 30th for FanQuest, our Special Olympics Unified Basketball Tournament at Woodson High School. Come out and watch Woodson’s Unified team play Robinson Secondary School!

This year our event’s theme is “Highlighting Inclusion” and we are selling our highlighter colored t-shirts at our event for $10! We have pink, green, and blue.

Sequence of Events at FanQuest:

5:30- 7:00p: Tailgate. Food/Games/Moon Bounce/Fun! Our sponsors and students will have tables set up in the hallway promoting their work or clubs. Make sure you bring cash! Concessions will be open as well. Family friendly games will be in the AUX gym, and the moon bounce will be in the Dance Studio!

6:45: Teacher/Admin Basketball Obstacle Course in the Main gym. Root for your favorite Admin/teacher trio!

    7:00: Opening Ceremony

7:15 – 8:15p: Unified Basketball Game Woodson vs. Robinson -- Each Quarter will have a 1 minute “TV Time Out” to highlight FanQuest sponsors, have performances or have a prize giveaway.

    8:30p: Closing ceremony

A little information about our Unified team:

Unified is a model of Special Olympics where student athletes with disabilities and their same-aged peers play alongside one another on one unified team. This differs from Special Olympics because that model only has athletes with disabilities. With the support from our Woodson Buddies and Partnership class, Woodson HS has a strong Unified team and we participate in Soccer, Basketball and Track and Field. FanQuest is the culminating event for both Special Olympics and Unified Basketball.

Evening attendance notification will continue as normally scheduled. Elementary schools attendance notifications will continue as usual. Note that we are only suspending attendance notifications. Schools will still need to follow standard attendance procedures and record student attendance throughout the testing windows.

Additionally, all attendance notifications will be suspended for elementary, middle, and high on the last day of school.

9. SOL Season - Personal Electronic Devices are Prohibited

As SOL season is approaching, we want to remind families that electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) are prohibited inside the SOL testing environment.

Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.  In past instances, a student’s access to a personal device in the testing environment has been identified as attempted cheating, please don’t let this happen to you!

Let’s work together to create a positive and safe testing environment for everyone.

For the full testing schedule, please visit the Woodson Testing Calendar site.

17. Woodson Sports Physical Night

It is that time of the year again! The W.T. Woodson Athletic Training Program’s Sports Physical Night event will be held this year on June 8 @ W.T. Woodson High School. As always, the goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the 2022-23 School Year. Each year, it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. The price will be $50 as it has been in previous years. Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s ONLY fundraiser for the year as we DO NOT receive any funding from the county. ALL proceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. Appointment times will be available at 5:30, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30pm.
Register for an appointment here!

If you cannot make it to our night on the 8th, but still want to support FCPS, feel free to sign up for another school's event! (Promise we won't be mad).

Want to Volunteer??

If you would like to volunteer please feel free to complete the volunteer registration here. As of now, we are still looking for a few more physicians and HCP's to complete the actual physical exams (MD, DO, NP, PA) as well other HCP’s comfortable with taking vital signs. If you are willing and able to donate your time, it is greatly appreciated. If not, and you know of some others that would be able to assist us, please feel free to spread the word!

If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at chogge@fcps.edu .

19. How do I check out my student from school?

Please let the Attendance Office know if you need your student to leave school early.  You can notify Attendance 3 different ways:

  • Submit the online attendance form and have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch. This form must be submitted at least 30 minutes before check-out time.
  • Student brings a note to the Attendance Office before 9:45am. The student will be issued a pink pass to leave class at the appointed time. The note must include the following - student name, date and time of when student is leaving, and reason for early check-out, student ID, parent signature and contact number.
  • Call the attendance line, 703-503-4800 and select Option 3. After leaving a message, please have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.

At the time of dismissal, your son/daughter will bring the pink check-out pass back to the Attendance Office for verification before meeting you outside.

If returning to school that same day, students must check in at the Attendance office before going back to class, even if it is between classes.

If one of the options above is not followed, we cannot guarantee a speedy checkout, so please make sure you notify the attendance office prior to picking up your son/daughter to ensure you make your appointment or commitment on time.

Due to staff responsibilities at the end of the day, we are not able to honor unannounced early dismissals within 15 minutes of school dismissal.

For full details on Attendance Procedures, please visit the Attendance page on the Woodson website.
