NOTIFICATION OF SOL TESTING

State assessments measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills reflected in state standards. The format for state assessments vary by grade level and content area. Please visit fcps.edu/node/42716 to learn more about these SOL tests and LAAs.

Students at Irving Middle School will be taking the SOL tests between May 5 and May 27 with first attempts scheduled on May 5, 9, and 13 as detailed below. Please notify our School Test Coordinator, Leigh Arscott (lbarscott@fcps.edu), if you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in missing an SOL test day. If you have questions about state assessments, contact your student’s teacher or Leigh Arscott.

  • On Thursday, May 5, eighth graders will take the Science SOL. Our schedule for the day will be Periods: 3, 1, 5, then 7.
  • On Monday, May 9, ALL students will take the Reading SOL in the morning. We will have testing at the start of the day and then follow with periods 7, 5, then 1.

On Friday, May 13, ALL students will take the Math SOL in the morning. As this is often the longest test, we will likely need to extend 5th period for lunches and shorten 7th period slightly at the end of the day.

Substance Abuse Webinars on April 26 & 28

Due to the rise in opioid overdoses in the Fairfax Health District (which is consistent with national and state trends), Fairfax County Public Schools has partnered with Fairfax County Government to provide educational webinars on youth substance use trends and supports. The free webinars are scheduled for April 26 and April 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Each of the three webinars will provide the same information.

The topics to be covered include:

  • Most commonly used substances.

  • In-depth opioid information.

  • Reasons why youth use substances.

  • Ways parents can support their children.

  • Available FCPS and Fairfax County Resources.

  • Ways students, parents, and community members can connect with support providers.

Registration for the webinars is available online.

Student Laptop Chargers

It is important that all students charge laptops each night, as we do not have the ability to charge them in classrooms at the beginning of each day. For students who need to purchase a replacement charger, the cost is $23. Chargers can be purchased two ways:

  1. Go to MySchoolBucks and pay for one online and then pick it up from the Tech Office the next day.
  2. Send a check made out to Irving MS with your student to school. They will take it to the Tech Office in the morning and pick up a replacement charger   at the same time.

Irving Stays After

After School Program Parent Survey

Below is a link for a quick survey about the Middle School After-School Program. The survey should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete. The survey is an important component of the after-school program evaluation and is critical for future funding. The more responses we receive, the more valuable and reliable the data. The responses not only allow us to assess the impact of the after-school program but they help drive program improvement and program quality. This Survey has been approved by the FCPS Internal Survey Review Committee.  Seal Approval Number 22224.

Over 90% of our students participated in the after-school program this school year, with over 21,000 occurrences of students staying after-school.  Thank you for your continued support of the Middle School After-School Program!
