1.Connect With a Scientist

We have a unique opportunity to connect live with a scientist. Meredith is our featured scientist in the Beyond the Water Bottle: Minimizing Microplastics Pollution Design Thinking Challenge - designed in partnership with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS).  This event is open to all teachers, students and family members. Educators, parents and family members may register themselves and their children / students together.

Beyond the Water Bottle: Minimizing Microplastic Pollution in the Marine Environment

April 26, 7:00-8:00pm EST (click the link above to register)

Open to all Teachers, Students & Families!

Join us as we explore the growing problem of microplastic pollution in the marine environment with guest speaker Meredith Evans Seeley who will share her insights and research on this topic, what's being done about it and how we can play a role. Meredith will also share what inspired her to pursue this career pathway. The session will include Q & A.

2.Yearbook Order Deadline

Don’t forget to pre-order your Fairfax Villa yearbook for this year! Be sure to order your child’s copy by April 24 by going to ybpay.lifetouch.com. Use our yearbook ID code of 13698322.

3.SOLPass

We have renewed our subscription to SOLPass. This is a website where students can easily practice some of the skills for their upcoming SOLs. We have subscribed through the end of the next school year so students may also use this in the summer also to hone their skills in reading and math. Many of them enjoy the activities there. This website is NOT a substitute for instruction; rather, it is a supplement and a practice site for students.

To log in,

  • go to https://www.solpass.org/
  • Click on Log In and start typing our school’s name. It will pop up.
  • Our password is dragon. (Please do not share this with anyone outside of our school.)
  • Select the subject you want to review.
  • On the left, select the grade level.
  • Select the topic that you want to practice.

There are 6th grade subjects and practice in the middle school section.

Students do NOT use their FCPS ID or password to log on.

4.SOL Parent Notification and Retest Information

Dear Parents and Guardians:

State assessments measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills reflected in state standards. The format for state assessments vary by grade level and content area. These include:

Both SOL tests and LAAs provide information about student achievement, and student results are shared with families. Reporting methods and timing vary based on the assessment format for the grade level and content area, as noted in the table below.

4

The Virginia Board of Education allows elementary and middle school students who fail Standards of Learning (SOL) tests by a narrow margin to retake the test before the end of the school year. Retesting is available when a student fails their first attempt with a score of 375-399 (where 400 is passing). Parent permission is required for any retests in grades 3-8. If your child should fall into this range, you will receive a letter requesting your permission for us to remediate with needed skills and retest your child.

If, during our SOL testing window (see schedule below),  you should get a letter requesting your permission for  your student to retake an SOL, please return it the next day. This means that your child scored right below passing and, after remediation in needed areas, may take a retest.  A decision NOT to allow retesting will not impact your child’s course grade or academic record. If your child does retake an SOL, the higher grade will be the one that counts.

5.SOL Schedule

In order to help you plan for your family activities and appointments in May, we want to let all families know of the SOL testing dates for grades 3-6. Please plan any other activities and appointments around these dates so that your child is present for their tests. All tests will be given in the morning. If you know now that your child will be out during their SOL days, please let your child’s teacher know right away. Students who are absent on a test day will be given the test the day that they are back in school.

6.Playground Renovation Project

Fairfax Villa ES is pleased to announce that our preschool and K-6 playground renovations started on Monday, March 28th and will continue throughout the next few weeks.

Our students will continue to enjoy recess on the back fields as well as the two courtyard areas. The playground and blacktop will be closed to the school and its community until the project is complete.

A wheelchair accessible walkway will be created  so that all of our students can access the fields in a safe manner. We are thrilled for the opportunity for our students to enjoy their newly renovated playground before the end of the school year.

7.Spring AAP Newsletter

The Advanced Academics Program (AAP) Spring Newsletter is now posted on our school newsletter here. The newsletter includes information on Spring screening for school-based services for the 2022-2023 school year and an overview of the AAP levels of service. 8.Spring iReady Assessments

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted iReady as an academic universal screener for use with all elementary school students in grades 1 through 6. The iReady assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test.

The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on iReady results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. An example of an additional diagnostic assessment is the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). The iReady reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary grade students.

Our Spring  iReady dates are April 12 - June 9 for grades 3-6 and April 12 - May 20 for grades 1 and 2. Your child’s teacher will share with you the dates of their testing. Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found at the iReady Universal Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/us).

If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact your child’s teacher or the school’s test coordinators, Ms. Sobeski (sdsobeski@fcps.edu) and Ms. Schmidt (bdschmidt@fcps.edu).

11.Parent Input Form for 2022-23 Class Placement

With the end of the year quickly approaching, we are already looking ahead to next year. While we look at class placements for the coming year, we want you to be aware of the process. We place students in classrooms based on numerous criteria. Students are grouped so that classrooms are heterogeneous, having a balance of boys and girls, a balance of academic performance and ability, and groups that will allow for the greatest support from our resource teachers.

Classroom teachers will have input into the recommendations for next year, as will our counselors and specialists. Our staff has been told that we will not take requests for particular teachers because we base our placement on instructional criteria and individual student strengths and needs. It is unfair to give special consideration to some parents when it would be impossible to grant requests from all parents. Please be aware also that grade level assignments for staff sometimes change, due to late enrollments or other changes.  Staff assignments are determined at the end of the summer. Our staff has been directed not to give out information about placement prior to that time. Children and parents are disappointed when changes must be made due to staffing issues.

In addition, we also value parent input.  If you feel there is pertinent information to support your child’s success for the upcoming school year, you may submit your input by clicking on this Google Form link:https://forms.gle/JxkCXDfW1PStFg356. The parent input forms are due by May 13, 2022.  We value and consider your insight into your child’s learning needs. Taken together with teacher input, your feedback informs class placements.

12.Donations Needed: Copy Paper

Due to budgetary restraints, we are in need of donated copy paper to support our academic activities during the 4th quarter of the school year. We are already considering whether printing is necessary for each task and choosing to double-side print when possible. Conserving paper will help us mitigate the paper shortage, save money, and reduce FCPS’ environmental footprint.

Please consider donating packs of paper to Fairfax Villa ES. Remember, the IRS allows you to claim a deduction for the donations you make to qualified organizations, including public schools.  The type of paper that works best in our printers is:

  • Copy and/or Multipurpose 8.5 inch x 11 inch
  • Bright white

Thank you for your consideration in this donation request.

13.Academic Testing Results Information

Here is the FCPS schedule for the parent reports of the testing that students have had this year..

15.Shots Update for Rising 7th Grade Students

Dear Rising 7th Grade Families,

We are excited to welcome you and your students to Frost Middle School!

The Code of Virginia requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases prior to entrance into Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

Effective July 1, 2021 all students entering 7th grade will be required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), and Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY).

Seventh grade students cannot begin school in August without proper Tdap and Meningococcal documentation.

If you have not done so yet, please provide one of the following documents to either your elementary school or to Frost Middle School as soon as possible:

  1. An updated immunization record showing that the student has received the immunization(s).
  1. A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the vaccine(s) was given.
  1. A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
  2. A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online at:

http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/health_medical/certificate_religious_exemption.pdf

Immunizations are available from your student's healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department clinic locations and hours are available online at: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/novel-coronavirus/vaccine/partners or by calling 703-746-2411.

Completing required immunizations and submitting documentation before the end of this school year will mean a smooth and easy transition for your new middle school student.

Please contact Ms. Emily Cheng at echeng@fcps.edu if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Anthony Harris

Principal, Frost Middle School

16.Monday & Friday Fairfax Villa Clothing

To celebrate being back in person, students and staff will be wearing the same clothing to kickoff and end each week during the 2021-22 school year!

  • On Mondays, we will be wearing our Positivity shirts to highlight our character strengths and virtues that we will be learning throughout the school year.  The Boosterthon team  distributed these green shirts during the fun run. The shirts highlight our Villa  dragon and Positivity logos on the front of the shirts.
  • On Fridays, we will be showing off our favorite Fairfax Villa spirit wear.  If your son or daughter has outgrown their Fairfax Villa spirit wear clothing, our PTA has some new ones.

17.FCPS COVID-19 Dashboard for School Year 2021-2022

On a daily basis, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is sharing COVID-19 cases (self-reported to us by students and staff) with the Fairfax County Health Department. The information in the link below helps the health department begin contact tracing. More information about the data is available in the "About" tab on the site.

https://www.fcps.edu/return-school/fcps-confirmed-covid-19-case-reporting

Clicking on the 4th tab (FCPS Reported Daily Cases by Site), scrolling far over to the right, and  then choosing our school in the dropdown box on the right side will give you the data for our school.

18.Daily Health Screening Reminder

On a daily basis, please consider if any of the following are true for your child, and if so, please keep them home:

  • Feeling feverish and/or having chills –documented temperature of 100.4°F or higher?

  • Has there been any use of fever reducing medication within the last 24 hours?

  • A new cough that is not due to another health condition?

  • Nasal congestion or runny nose?

  • New shortness of breath or difficulty breathing that is not due to another health condition?

  • New chills that are not due to another health condition?

  • A new sore throat that is not due to another health condition?

  • New muscle aches that are not due to another health condition, or that may have been caused by a specific activity (such as physical exercise)?

  • Fatigue (more tired than usual)?

  • In the past 14 days, have you had close contact (within about 6 feet for 15 minutes or more) with someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19?

As a reminder, if your child comes to school with any of these symptoms, they will be isolated in the CARE room and you will be contacted to bring them home. They will need a healthcare provider’s note or proof of a negative COVID 19 test before they can return to school. A Return-to-School form is not needed if your child develops symptoms outside of school and you decide to keep them home.

Students who must remain absent for multiple days for COVID-related reasons will be provided asynchronous activities. Please communicate with us if your child tests positive for COVID and is isolating, or if your child is quarantining by order of the Fairfax County Health Department.
