Today's message includes the following:
Dear Cub Run Families,
April is full of celebrations, and we are fortunate to have so much to celebrate this month!
In the month of April, we honor three valued groups at Cub Run, across Fairfax County, and across our country:
- April is Arab American Heritage Month, when we honor the contributions, stories, and achievements of Arab Americans.
- April is Autism Acceptance Month, when we celebrate those with autism, promote acceptance, and build inclusive experiences.
- April is the Month of the Military Child, when we honor the sacrifices and contributions of children of parents and guardians who serve our country in the Armed Forces. As a former military child myself, I know firsthand the contributions of military families who support their loved ones who serve our country.
And finally, we wish Ramadan Mubarak to our Muslim families who are celebrating this month of Ramadan.
In honor of these valued branches of our Cub Run family tree, I invite you to share the following stories with your families.
Have a wonderful week!
Warmly,
Natalie Lorenzi
Principal

"Michael," says Karl, "there's a really big bear in the backyard." This is how three children meet Stillwater, a giant panda who moves into the neighborhood and tells amazing tales. To Addy he tells a story about the value of material goods. To Michael he pushes the boundaries of good and bad. And to Karl he demonstrates what it means to hold on to frustration.
With graceful art and simple stories that are filled with love and enlightenment, Jon Muth (and Stillwater the bear) present three ancient Zen tales that are sure to strike a chord in everyone they touch. Check out the other picture books in this series featuring Stillwater and his Zen tales here.

Inside there is family, laughter, and love. Outside there is only loneliness. As a young boy joyfully welcomes guests to the Passover Seder, a lonely little kitten watches through the window and imitates what it sees. And when it’s time to open the door to welcome Elijah, something magical happens that changes both their lives forever! Hear about author Lesléa Newman’s inspiration for this story here, and get a sneak peek of the book on illustrator Susan Gal’s website here. |

A lyrical, captivating retelling of the Palm Sunday and Easter story from National Book Award nominee Mitali Perkins. Set in Jerusalem during a turbulent week that came to be known as Holy, Little Wind and the trees of Jerusalem can’t wait for Real King to visit, but Little Wind is puzzled when the Quiet Man who comes isn't what he expected. His wise friend Bare Tree helps him learn that sometimes strength is found in sacrifice, and new life can spring up even when hope seems lost. |

Weekly COVID Testing Discontinued
To limit the spread of COVID-19 and to keep schools open safely, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has been providing a COVID-19 screening and diagnostic testing program to students and staff as part of its layered prevention strategies.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the community level for Fairfax County is currently classified as low; this classification has continued for the past month. In addition, Fairfax Health District COVID-19 Vaccination Status indicates that more than 70% of all Fairfax Health Districts residents have been fully vaccinated (defined by receiving two of a two-dose vaccine or one of a single-dose vaccine). More than 80% of residents have received one COVID-19 vaccine dose. Vaccination rates by age group indicates that more than 50% of students ages 5-11 and more than 90% of students ages 12-17 have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. COVID-19 Vaccinations are free and available at various locations in our community.
Based on these metrics and CDC guidance, FCPS will discontinue the following prevention strategies on April 22, 2022:
If students or employees have symptoms and need to get tested, the following options are available:
-
COVID-19 Testing is available at various sites throughout Fairfax County and the state.
-
At-Home Test Kits - Students leaving the school CARE Room with symptoms of illness are provided an at-home test kit.
-
Test-To-Stay Program - In partnership with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), FCPS is providing access to the Test-To-Stay program for students who have been identified as a close contact when an outbreak has been declared. This program is available to any student who meets eligibility criteria and whose parent/legal guardian has provided consent for their participation.
While we are encouraged by the continued decline in COVID-19 cases in our community, we are also committed to keeping our schools safe for all to learn and work in person. Please continue to do your part to maintain a healthy learning environment by using layered prevention strategies including hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, monitoring for illness, and staying home when sick. Employees should still report positive test results to their supervisor.
Thank you for your patience as we navigate through the late stages of the pandemic together.
Lost & Found Items
 |
|
With the spring season here, we have several winter coats, jackets and sweatshirts in our lost & found. The items will be on display Thursday and Friday of this week in the main lobby. Please encourage your child to claim any of their belongings. If you would like to look through the items, please come to the school between 4:00-4:30pm. |
Gearing Up for Next Year
It’s hard to believe, but we’re already planning for the 2022-2023 school year! Parents and guardians, we value and welcome your insight regarding your child’s learning needs. Please fill out this Google Form (one per child) to let us know if your child will still be enrolled with us next year. If your child will return to Cub Run for the 22-23 school year, this survey invites you to leave feedback for us to consider as we create the framework for next year's class placements.
We respectfully ask that you do not request a specific teacher.
Thank you!
Pokemon Cards & Toys
Several teachers have reported an increase in toys, particularly Pokemon cards appearing in the classroom, at lunch or outside at recess. These items can often become the source of conflict and/or a student becoming upset because the items get damaged, lost or “borrowed” by others. Please discuss with your child the importance of leaving these objects at home.
Did you know that not all plastic bottle caps get recycled?
Help Ms. Matchitt’s 3rd grade class create a cool art project out of plastic bottlecaps that would otherwise end up in the trash. When you’re done with a round bottlecap, put it in one of the collection boxes located in the cafeteria or near the steps in the lobby. Caps can be any color or size, as long as they are plastic and round. Thank you for your help!

2022 Cub Run SOL Dates
Students in grades 3-6 will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments this spring. Federal law requires schools to give tests in reading, mathematics, and science. SOL tests measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills detailed in state standards. These tests provide information about student achievement to the parent, school, division, and state. Scores will be available to families prior to next school year. Please see the schedule below

Spring iReady Screener
The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted iReady as an academic universal screener for use with all elementary school students in grades 1 through 6. The iReady assessment includes a reading assessment and a mathematics assessment. The purpose of this screener is to identify students who may have possible gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on iReady results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose any specific learning areas that may need support. An example of an additional diagnostic assessment is the Developmental Reading Assessment 2 (DRA2). The iReady reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary grade students.
The Spring iReady dates are April 12 - June 9 for grades 3-6 and April 12 - May 20 for grades 1 and 2. Your child’s teacher will share the exact dates of testing with you.
iReady Score Reports
A reminder that score report letters are centrally published in ParentVUE and can be found in the ParentVUE "Documents" tab. Additionally, historical test results are also available in the ParentVUE "Test History" tab. Please note: the Test History tab is currently only accessible via a web browser and not the mobile app.
