Message from Ms. Kearns

Hello Lake Braddock families,

This week has been a great first week serving as the Acting Principal. We celebrated our very own Jacquie Naughton as she receiving the National Life Changer Award.  We are so grateful to Jacquie for her service to our community and the positive impact she has had on so many lives.

Next week, we look forward to celebrating Stress Less week as we prepare for AP and SOL testing that begins in May. Help us support our students and encourage them to take a deep breath as they prepare for their upcoming exams.

In the new role that Teri Hampton and I have, we want to continue to partner with you to end this year on a strong note for our students and the Lake Braddock community.  Please reach out to us with any concerns, questions or suggestions.

Go Bruins Nation!

Counselor Jacquie Naughton Selected as a National Life Changer Award

Congrats to School Counselor Jacquie Naughton for receiving the LifeChanger of the Year award. This award celebrates individuals who are making a significant difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership. This link is the story featuring Jacquie's award: http://app.lifechangeroftheyear.com/nomination_detail.cfm?NominationID=7526.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month. On Wednesday April 27th is international Denim Day. Denim day is a campaign response to the Italian Supreme Court's overruling of a rape conviction in 1999. Although the perpetrator had been found guilty, the Supreme Court argued that because jeans are difficult to remove, the perpetrator couldn't have done so without the help of the victim. Therefore, implying consent.

Denim Day asks community members, elected officials, businesses, and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.

So please wear Demin and teal on Wednesday April 27th to show your solidarity with survivors of sexual assault, abuse, harassment, and rape.

For more information about Demin Day and sexual assault awareness month, please come see Ms. Ghafoori the high school social worker in high school student services.

Safe Routes to School Updates

Bike and Roll to School Day is coming up on May 4th!  Time to get your bike gear together and tuned up!  Also, if your student will be riding to school for the first time in a while, we recommend that you ride the route before Bike and Roll to School Day, to see how long it takes and to plan the safest route.  Safety incentives will be given to the first 200 student participants to arrive at the bike racks at school.

Parent or student volunteers are requested to greet participants at the bike racks when they arrive. Parents can also sign up to ride along with groups of students from neighborhood meeting points to the school.

SRTS Survey

This week, both students and parents are invited to take surveys about how they commute to school each day.  The anonymous info you share is an important part of making everyone’s commute to school safer, especially for pedestrians and bikers in our parking lot and in the school zone surrounding Lake Braddock.  With your responses, we will be able to apply for funding to improve the safety concerns and barriers you tell us about.

Click here for the School Commute Survey for Parents and Guardians. The survey asks questions about how students get to school and concerns that may be preventing students from arriving at school or home safely.  It should take only 5-10 minutes to complete.  To enable as many families to respond as possible, it will remain open for 30 days.  The results will be shared with the school community.

FCPS and LB Students Take Top Honors at Virginia FBLA State Leadership Conference

A special congratulations to our Lake Braddock winners: Michelle Wang, Jenna Chanchu, Anwesha Chowdhury, Paul Kim, Tyler Huang, Jeevan Kaur, Ariana Marticio, and Camryn Owens.

Sports Physical-Request for Help!

We are looking for medical practitioners (MDs, DOs, LNPs, and PAs) that are interested in volunteering for our annual Sports Physical Night event! We need professionals willing and able to sign off on a student’s readiness to participate in athletics. If you’ve never seen how this event works, it has a production line-like setup. Students first complete a multi-station screening process which includes anthropometric measurements, blood pressure/pulse and vision (these stations are typically supervised by ATs, RNs, EMTs and PTs). Once the initial screening stations are complete, the student proceeds to the exam station where an MD, DO, LNP or PA will review their medical history as well as the results of the previously completed stations before conducting any medical/musculoskeletal evaluations deemed necessary to sign off on the student’s medical eligibility status.

This event serves as our main source of fundraising to replenish sports medicine supplies for the year and offer our athletes the best possible care. If you are an MD, DO, LNP, or PA, please consider donating your time and expertise to support a key component of Lake Braddock’s Athletic Training Program. We understand that health and safety are still a concern, so if there are any suggestions/stipulations you may have to make this work, don’t hesitate to share. We are willing to accommodate as best we can! If you know a practitioner who could help us out, please pass along this message and the signup link below!!

CLICK HERE to volunteer for the Lake Braddock/South County/West Springfield Physical Night event on June 9th, 2022!

AP Testing Schedule and Search for Parent Volunteers

AP Testing will begin the first week of May!  The dates and reporting times for each exam can be found on our website.  Once the exam rooms are confirmed for the TBD locations, they will be updated on the LB website and Schoology.

ANY Parents/Guardians - We take any and ALL parents/guardians!!   You DO NOT need to be a parent/guardian of a student taking AP exams to help us out!  We would love your help in assisting with proctoring the AP exams!  BONUS:  Teacher Appreciation is coming soon!  If you really want to show your appreciation for all their hard work, please sign up for a few slots so that teachers can be relieved of their proctoring assignments!

Please sign up here.

No experience is necessary however, there are few things to remember:

  • You may not proctor an AP exam if YOUR student is taking that exam.
  • You may not bring a cell phone/electronics into the testing room.
  • Wear comfortable, quiet shoes.  You’ll surely get your steps in!

Requesting a Late AP Exam due to May 2 Eid Observance

After careful consideration, FCPS leadership decided to continue with the established AP exam schedule for May 2, 2022. Students registered for AP exams on May 2nd (Chemistry, Spanish Literature, Japanese Language, US Government) will need to request late testing if they are unable to attend due to the Eid religious observance. May 3rd exams that were previously rescheduled for May 17th will remain on May 17th. Students who are unable to attend May 2nd AP exams (Chemistry, Spanish Literature, Japanese Language, or US Government) due to the Eid religious observance need to contact Lynn Carrera ( LNCarrera@fcps.edu ) or Gary Ranallo (GWRanallo@fcps.edu ) no later than April 22nd to request late testing. Late testing follows the College Board Late Testing Schedule.

Important Reminders

Principal Selection Process

The Region 4 Office will begin the process to select the next principal of Lake Braddock Secondary School.  An important first step in this procedure is to inform faculty, staff, parents, and community members about the principal selection process. Therefore, all faculty, staff, parents, and community members are invited to attend an important meeting on Monday, April 25, 2022 at 6:00 p.m.  This meeting will be held virtually using Zoom.  A Zoom link will be sent the Sunday afternoon before (via eNotify) and we request that you sign in with your first and last name to help us better monitor and facilitate attendance.

As we will outline at the April 25th meeting, there are multiple levels of interviews that will take place in order to select a candidate that is the best fit and match to lead Lake Braddock Secondary School into the future.  A panel interview will be held virtually on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.  The advisory interview panel will be comprised of three staff, four parent representatives and one student representative from the Lake Braddock Secondary School community.  If you are interested in serving as a panelist, please submit your information by close of business on May 10, 2022 using the Google form linked here. The Region 4 Leadership Team will review all submissions and select staff and community members to serve as panelists or alternates for these interviews.  Individuals selected to serve in this capacity will be contacted by the FCPS Department of Human Resources which will be overseeing this process.

Another critical component to the process is your written input. We invite you to offer your individual, written input via email regarding the skills, experience, and leadership characteristics needed for Lake Braddock Secondary School. You might also address any challenges or issues that a new principal will need to address. Input is confidential and should be sent to apmcgeehan@fcps.edu.  Below you will see suggestions for input you would submit it to the Department of Human Resources by Tuesday, May 10, 2022.

SOL Testing in May

Information regarding SOL testing at Lake Braddock can be found on our LBSS SOL Schedule and General Information page. This includes a link to the testing calendar, cell phone and electronic device policy, as well as the parent notification letters that were sent prior to Spring Break. Students must use their FCPS laptops for SOL testing; these tests cannot be taken on a personal device as per VDOE regulations. Teachers will be communicating to their students their exact room assignment as we get closer to the test dates and students will also receive an email to their school Gmail account from Ms. Bury, LBSS Assessment Coach, with their specific test date and room assignments, approximately a week before testing. It is important that students check their email for these testing notifications because, while most testing will occur on Tuesdays and Wednesday during May, some students with accommodations may test at a different time than their classmates. Please note that the bell and period schedule will change on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for testing and that information will be forthcoming soon.

SOL Expedited Retake Permission Form (Middle School only)

The Virginia Board of Education allows elementary and middle school students who fail Standards of Learning (SOL) tests by a narrow margin to retake the test before the end of the school year. Retesting is available when a student fails their first attempt with a score of 375-399 (where 400 is passing). Parent permission is required for any retests in grades 3-8. If you believe that your middle school student would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills on the SOL test, please complete this Google permission form. A decision not to allow retesting will not impact your student’s course grade or academic record.

How to Stay In Touch

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:

Attendance Lines

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Procedures for Picking Up a Student Early

  • Prior to 8:00 a.m., the student must present a note from the parent to their subschool office. Notes must include time of dismissal, reason for leaving, and a contact number. Parents of middle school students must also include the name of the person picking the student up. Please note that this person must be listed as an emergency contact. At the time of early check-out, middle school parents must come in Entrance 1 and meet their student at the security desk. Anyone picking up a middle school student must bring a photo ID with them. High school parents may pick up students outside Entrance 1.
  • Notes are strongly preferred for early check-out, but if a parent is unable to send a note with the student, the parent should call the subschool office as early as possible. All calls will be confirmed by callback to a phone number on the emergency care card. Regrettably, if the parent did not send a note with the student, the parent will be required to park, come into the school to furnish a note, and pick up the student. Without advance notice provided by a note, there may be a wait until our staff is able to locate the student, particularly if the student is at lunch or in a physical education class. We further regret that without advance notice, we are unable to accommodate requests for early dismissal after 2:15 pm.
  • In either case, students must check out at the subschool office when leaving school and check in with the security desk upon return. Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action (if returning to school, students are also subject to search). Students must contact all teachers of any class to be missed.

Read our full Attendance procedures at our website.

Late Bus Information

Late bus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Buses will pick up students in the front of the building with a departure time of approximately 4:45 pm.  Please check  StudentVue and ParentVue for your student's late bus number and stop. If you have any questions, please contact your student's appropriate subschool.
