Safe Student Drop-off

This message is to address trends with morning student drop-off and pick-up. With safety being our priority, please remember to adhere to these RCMS community expectations which allow for a safe and efficient drop-off and pick-up.

  • Please ONLY use the Kiss N Ride loop when dropping off students in the morning. No students should be dropped off in the RCMS parking lot, on McLearen Rd., or on EDS Dr. All locations other than Kiss N Ride place students in unsafe conditions.
  • Additionally, students who participate in after school programs should also be picked-up in the Kiss N Ride loop and not at another school location or location off-campus.

We appreciate your attention to these important procedures.

Sincerely,

The RCMS Administrative Team

Attention 8th Grade Families:

The Virginia Department of Education has replaced specific Standards of Learning tests (SOLs), such as Civics & Economics, with Local Alternative Assessments (LAAs). For the LAA students will create a Public Service Announcement using their acquired knowledge, research and skills to show their understanding of topics in Civics. In order to support students’ performances, we are asking for families to support and encourage their child to approach this task with a commitment to doing their best on the LAA. Additionally, the LAA will count as a coursework grade for all students and, therefore, will not be eligible for a retake per the Civics Syllabus. For information about LAAs, please reference the FCPS Parent Letter on LAAs.

On Reporting Absences

If a student will be absent or arriving late to school, parents or guardians should always report the details of the absence to the RCMS Attendance Office. Teachers do not have access to mark a student excused for an absence, which is why it is imperative that parents contact the attendance office (instead of, or in addition to, the teacher) when their child is absent so we can mark them correctly.

To report an absence, parents have these options:

  1. Use the link to our online attendance form (preferred) from the main page of the RCMS website:
  2. Send an email with full details to: CarsonMiddle.Attendance@fcps.edu, or
  3. Call the attendance line at 703-925-3636 being sure to include the spelling of your student’s last name and reason for the absence.

If your student will be picked up early for an appointment:
Please send them to the front office in the morning with a note stating the time of the dismissal.
Students will be given a pass to leave class and meet parents in the office. Parents should come to entrance #1, to the main office, with a photo ID to pick up their student for early dismissals.

For more information on the attendance policies, please visit the RCMS Attendance page.

Oakton High School Health Physical Night

Sports Health Screening and Pre-participation Physical (PPE)

The Oakton High School Athletic Training Program is offering an opportunity for students to receive a sports health screening and pre-participation physical (PPE) on Tuesday May 17, 2022 from 5:30-8 pm.  Our team physicians and certified athletic trainers will be on hand to provide a thorough screening including a postural exam, flexibility evaluation, and information regarding what each of those assessments mean.  If, during the screening or physical the physicians find something that is questionable to them regarding your child’s health, they may request further evaluation by another physician. We are asking for a donation of $50 for the PPE.  To pre-register for a PPE, go to: https://forms.gle/dSNCjto7nUtkr4Uk7  and follow the links to Athletic Physicals (PPE).  The link is now active.  You can also find a link to the new Physical form at that site. Walk-ins are also welcome on that evening but we ask for a $60 donation at that time. You can pay for the PPE through my school bucks at the following link: https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/stores/catalog/getproduct?requestAction=ViewAll&clientKey=ZZI5ZQWBKS04NJ8&productGroupKey=ZZIOEEZJBP0RROF&view=&productKey=ZZ5QPAELMZYWA2U

If your son or daughter is thinking of playing a sport, he/she will need to have a VHSL pre-participation examination (PPE) completed on the official VHSL physical form.  This exam must be dated after May 1, 2022 in order for your son/daughter to be eligible to participate on any team, including pre-season conditioning.  The physical exam on page 3 must be completed and signed by a physician, a nurse practitioner or a physician’s assistant (MD, NP, PA, or DO).

South Lakes High School

Attention South Lakes Athletes! SLHS is hosting Sports Physical Night.

Spring Physicals will take place on Monday May 23rd at South Lakes High School. They will be valid for all summer conditioning/workouts and all of school year 2021-22. Student-Athletes can NOT participate in any team events for next year without a valid physical (documented on the VHSL Pre-Participation Examination form) after May 1st.

Physical examinations may always be done with your primary care physicians, but this is our annual fundraiser. It gives you the opportunity to have your physical done and it helps fund all the supplies (bandages, gloves, gauze, ice bags, rehab equipment, etc.) the Athletic Training Staff needs to take care of our student-athletes. We have doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals from the community come in to perform physicals right at the high school- they volunteer their time so that we can raise the money we need to sustain our program.

Since the Athletic Training Program does not receive funds from the county to pay for these necessary supplies, we rely on this event to give us the money we need to do so. To encourage participation, we make it easy!

  • Evening appointments so kids don't miss school and you don't miss work
  • An easily accessible location right at the high school
  • We also include musculoskeletal screenings that you probably will not see performed at a normal sports physical at your doctor’s office. We let you know any "problem" areas and offer a resource at the end to help target those areas to in turn prevent injuries down the road.
  • And last but not least, friendly faces to guide you through the process

For those new to high school athletics, State Licensed and Board Certified Athletic Trainers are employed by FCPS to help with the health and well-being of student-athletes. Our job includes prevention, recognition, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. We keep extensive records on the medical history and status of all players and participate in continuing education annually to keep our knowledge and skills up to date with the most recent research. We are here to keep sports safe and save you the headache of heading to the doctor for all the minor things! We can do it all- from minor boo-boo's to broken bones, illnesses, internal injuries and even concussions- not only will we take care of your student-athlete, but we'll also serve as the liaison between you, the student, his/her teachers, coaches and any other medical professionals that may be involved to ensure a healthy recovery and a safe return to play. And if we can't- because it's out of our scope of practice or it needs further medical attention- we'll lead you in the right direction to make it as pain and hassle free for you as we can!

We promise that everything (assuming a healthy physical from the doctor- if they refer you on for something specific, that’s for your child’s safety and needs to be addressed) on your physical paperwork will be complete and ready to go- leaving just the easy school/team paperwork to be done before the first practice.

So PLEASE come and support the cause! Physicals are $50 and by appointment only- there are no guarantees a walk-in will be seen.
