April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience.

To show our support, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 20 for military children.

Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, and Space Force blue.

FanQuest Rescheduled for April 30th!

FanQuest has been rescheduled to Saturday, April 30th at Woodson HS.  Come out and watch Woodson’s Special Olympics Unified Basketball team play Robinson Secondary School!

Unified is a model of Special Olympics where student athletes with disabilities and their same-aged peers play alongside one another on one unified team. This differs from Special Olympics because that model only has athletes with disabilities. With the support from our Woodson Buddies and Partnership class, Woodson HS has a strong Unified team and we participate in Soccer, Basketball and Track and Field. FanQuest is the culminating event for both Special Olympics and Unified Basketball.

WTW CAVS SPORTS UPDATES

Activities Week of April 18th

Check out all of these opportunities to enjoy the spring weather and cheer on our teams! Follow @Woodsonathletic on Twitter for current athletic updates and schedules.

Girls Lacrosse

Before spring break, the Woodson girls’ varsity squad hosted Falls Church Jaguars at Woodson High School on Tuesday. The Woodson girls retained consistent ball control from the start of the game. They slowly built up a lead and handed the Jaguars a 12 – 1 loss.

On Friday, April 1st, both JV and varsity Lady Cavaliers visited Robinson High School to take on their crosstown rivals.  The Woodson JV squad lost 6 – 5 to the Rams. The Woodson varsity girls struggled to control the Rams two high scoring attackers, and to get their offense going against Robinson’s high pressure zone defense. Woodson lost to Robinson 9 – 7.

This past Wednesday, both Woodson JV and varsity girls headed to Fairfax High School to take on a much-improved Fairfax Lions team.  The JV Lady Cavaliers easily handled the Lions beating them 10 -1.  In the varsity game, the Fairfax Lions kept a close game with Woodson through the first half. In the second half, the Cavaliers defense/midfield clears and transition scoring attack proved to be too much for the Lions to handle.  The final score was Woodson 14, Fairfax 7.

Boys Tennis

Woodson Boys Tennis beat South County last week and remains undefeated with a 5-0 record. This week the team has two away matches: Tuesday at Lake Braddock and Thursday at Fairfax. Both matches start at 4:00.

Softball

On Thursday Woodson welcomed West Potomac for a District game and came away with a 5-4 victory.  Down 3-1 in the 3rd inning Sedona Adams hit a two run homer to left field to tie the game.  Woodson took the lead in the bottom of the 6th plating two runs highlighted by Sarah Banker's bunt single RBI.  Emma Fleming contributed 2 hits to the offense. Veronica Udowitz pitched the first 3 innings allowing 1 earned run and striking out 3.  Claire Warden pitched the final 4 innings and got the victory allowing only 2 hits and 1 run.

On Saturday Woodson Softball participated in a tournament at Langely High School.  In game 1 Woodson fought a back and forth game against South Lakes.  Woodson fell short 7-4.  Highlights include a 2 RBI single by Veronica Udowitz in the 3rd inning.  Sarah Banker also added 2 hits.   Woodson came up short in the nightcap falling to host Langely 13-2.

Since these classes are all online, students will need access to a computer and the Internet.

The application is open now and will close at 5 p.m. on April 29. All students will be required to upload a high school transcript and any qualifying test scores if they do not have a 3.0 grade point average. Courses begin May 31 and end August 8.

More information about JumpStart2NOVA, including course offerings, materials, and details on how to apply, is available online.

FCPS Ends Covid Testing

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the community level for Fairfax County is currently classified as low; this classification has continued for the past month. In addition, Fairfax Health District COVID-19 Vaccination Status indicates that more than 70% of all Fairfax Health Districts residents have been fully vaccinated (defined by receiving two of a two-dose vaccine or one of a single-dose vaccine) and more than 80% have received one dose. Based on FCPS metrics, FCPS will discontinue the following prevention strategies on April 22:

If students have symptoms and need to get tested, the following options are available:

  • COVID-19 Testing is available at various sites throughout Fairfax County and the state.

  • At-Home Test Kits—Students leaving the school CARE Room with symptoms of illness are provided an at-home test kit.

  • Test-To-Stay Program—In partnership with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), FCPS is providing access to the Test-To-Stay program for students who have been identified as a close contact when an outbreak has been declared. This program is available to any student who meets eligibility criteria and whose parent/legal guardian has provided consent for their participation.
