Fun and Learning in PreK and Kindergarten

Spring Beautification Day Around the Towne

This week was a great week around the Towne! We hope you had a lovely spring break and enjoyed the lovely spring weather. Now that the weather is warming up, LTES will host a Spring Clean Up and Beautification Day on April 23, 2022 from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

All families are welcome to join in the fun. Please bring gloves, shovels, wheelbarrows, water bottles, etc. to aid our efforts.

SOL Testing Information

Students in grades 3-6 will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests between May 5 - 20, 2022. Please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. Our testing dates are as follows:

  • May 5 | Gr 3-6 Reading
  • May 10 | Gr 3-6 Math
  • May 12 | Gr 5 Science

State assessments measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills reflected in state standards. Students in grades 3-6 are assessed on the Standards of Learning (SOL) standardized tests in reading, mathematics, and science. More information can be found on the SOL assessments webpage.

Additionally, Grades 3, 4, & 6 are assessed in Social Studies and Grade 5 is assessed in Writing via a local alternative assessment (LAA) which includes performance-based assessments (PBAs). These assessments are completed during classroom instruction throughout the school year. More information can be found on the LAA and PBA webpage.

Both SOL tests and LAAs provide information about student achievement, and student results are shared with families. SOL score reports are posted in the Student Information System (SIS) ParentVUE in the summer and LAA format performance are incorporated into quarterly progress reports. Please contact Ms. Moore or Ms. Vigil, our assistant principals, if you have additional questions.

Counselor Corner

Kelso's Choices

This month in our counseling lessons:

  • Students in grades K-2 are learning positive ways to deal with small conflict situations. To do this we are encouraging students to try two ideas or “Kelso’s Choices” when they have a small problem with a peer. The lessons feature a frog named Kelso who walks students through the nine conflict management choices for “small” problems and encourages them to go to a trusted adult if they come across a “big” problem.
  • Grades 3-6 continue to work through the Second Step curriculum to learn conflict resolution skills.

In addition, the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) screener will be administered again during the classroom counseling lessons in April-May. The screener is used to identify strengths and needs for students. It also provides information regarding students’ experiences and how staff can support their needs. More information about the Screener can be found here

Thank you for your continued support! Please reach out to a member of our counseling team if you have questions or want to learn more about Kelso's Choices, Second Step, or how to support your Lion at home.

Last Day For Optional Student COVID Testing @ LTES is April 21

To limit the spread of COVID-19 and to keep schools open safely, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has been providing a COVID-19 screening and diagnostic testing program to students and staff as part of its layered prevention strategies

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the community level for Fairfax County is currently classified as low; this classification has continued for the past month. In addition, Fairfax Health District COVID-19 Vaccination Status indicates that more than 70% of all Fairfax Health Districts residents have been fully vaccinated (defined by receiving two of a two-dose vaccine or one of a single-dose vaccine). More than 80% of residents have received one COVID-19 vaccine dose. Vaccination rates by age group indicates that more than 50% of students ages 5-11 and more than 90% of students ages 12-17 have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.  COVID-19 Vaccinations  are free and available at various locations in our community.

Based on these metrics and CDC guidance, FCPS will discontinue the following prevention strategies on April 22, 2022:

If students or employees have symptoms and need to get tested, the following options are available:

  • COVID-19 Testing is available at various sites throughout Fairfax County and the state.
  • At-Home Test Kits - Students leaving the school CARE Room with symptoms of illness are provided an at-home test kit.
  • Test-To-Stay Program - In partnership with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), FCPS is providing access to the Test-To-Stay program for students who have been identified as a close contact when an outbreak has been declared. This program is available to any student who meets eligibility criteria and whose parent/legal guardian has provided consent for their participation.

While we are encouraged by the continued decline in COVID-19 cases in our community, we are also committed to keeping our schools safe for all to learn and work in person. Please continue to do your part to maintain a healthy learning environment by using layered prevention strategies including hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, monitoring for illness, and staying home when sick.

Thank you for your patience as we navigate through the late stages of the pandemic together.
