Our spring book fair is next week. This is a great opportunity to support our library while purchasing some great books for your child(ren). Please see the information below on ways to preview and purchase the books. Parents are welcome to visit the book fair on Wednesday, April 27, from 4:00 - 7:30 PM.
SOL testing begins the week of May 2. The SOL schedule for grades 3-6 is printed at the end of this newsletter. Please try to ensure your child does not have scheduled appointments or is away from school on their scheduled test dates.
We are trying to get more classes outside for lunch when the weather cooperates. We are hopeful to be able to have classes each outside for a week every 3 weeks.
April is the Month of the Military Child, a time to recognize and thank children from military families for their contributions and sacrifices. The nationwide commemoration was established in 1986 by former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger. We invite all military-connected students to send in drawings, poetry, and/or photographs that celebrate their life as a military-connected student. We will display all submissions on a bulletin board in the cafeteria. Please bring your submissions to the office. We extend our appreciation for the service of all children from military families and celebrate them by wearing purple today in an effort to say “Thank You.”
Have a good rest of the week,
The UMES Admin Team Ashleigh, Jennie, and Kathy #UMESBetterTogether
The Spring Book Fair is Coming!
Union Mill’s Scholastic Book Fair opens Monday, April 25th and runs until noon on Friday, April 29th. On Wednesday, April 27th the book fair will open from 4pm -7:30pm. For parents who cannot come to the book fair in person, they can support the school and order online at: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/unionmillelemsch.
Instead of Teacher Wish lists, parents can donate funds via Scholastic’s eWallet option and the designated teacher can spend the funds at the book fair. Any unused funds will be presented in the form of a gift certificate that the teacher can use at the online site or through their regular Scholastic book orders. Parents can also set up an eWallet online for their own child to use at the book fair.
Support our library by going online or attending the book fair in person to browse a great selection of books at great prices. All proceeds help us to purchase new books for the UMES Library. Thank you for your support!
5th and 6th Grade Families- Update Your Child’s Immunizations
If your child has received the Tdap or Meningococcal vaccine, please bring a copy of this record to our school office. Reminders for students in grades 5 and 6 will be in the Friday folder. Virginia Law requires that all students entering seventh grade receive a booster dose of the Tdap vaccine prior to the beginning of school. For questions regarding immunization documentation, please contact Leah Milla/Registrar at 703-322-8500.
Student Intentions for the Next School Year
The Student Intention Form for Next Year was sent home in last week's Friday folder. Thank you to those that have already completed and returned the form. Completing and returning this form promptly to the office will help ensure we have the correct number of teachers at all grade levels for next year and that we are sending your rising 7th grader to the correct school.
Online Tutoring
Students now have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost to families. Tutor.com is available 24/7, through online voice or text chat, and in your child’s preferred language. Student participation is optional and parents/guardians can opt their students out of accessing the service. You can learn more about Tutor.com on the Tutor.com Online Tutoring Services website.
Students will be able to access Tutor.com via a link in Schoology. Additional information about how to log in and access a tutor is provided to families via the following instructional videos: elementary video and secondary video. Questions not answered in the posted resources may be sent to onlinetutoring@fcps.edu.
This new service can help many Union Mill students complete assignments, better understand classroom lessons, and be successful.
