Celebrating National Arab American Heritage Month

McNair Upper ES and FCPS are proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the remarkable history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans.  This month in McNair’s Weekly Family Announcement, we will include an interesting fact about National Arab American Heritage Month and some important achievements and contributions of Arab Americans.

Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. An estimated 3.7 million Americans have Arab roots, according to the Arab American Institute, with ancestries traced to 22 countries in the Middle East and North Africa, including Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Palestine, Morocco, Iraq, Jordan, Yemen, Bahrain, Tunisia, Algeria, Sudan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and others.

Paula Abdul was born in 1962 in San Fernando, California.  Her father is of Syrian Jewish heritage and was born in Aleppo, Syria.  Abdul is a singer, songwriter, dancer, choreographer, actress, and television personality.  She began her career as a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Lakers.   Later, she released several successful records and was a judge on American Idol, Live to Dance, the X Factor and So You Think You Can Dance.

Paul Anka was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1941.  His father came to the U.S from Syria and his mother was an immigrant from Lebanon.  Anka is a singer-songwriter and actor and has released over 20 albums.  He has written many songs including the theme for the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.  Anka has also acted in movies and television shows.

Friendly Reminder: Class Placement Family Input

As administration begins collaborating with classroom teachers to form next year's grade level classes, I encourage interested parents/guardians to send me an email (Mrs. Goddin at MMGoddin@fcps.edu) where you share the type of learning environment your child does their best work. This letter is also a great opportunity for parents/guardians to describe their child's learning style; as well as highlight any specific areas of strength or opportunities for growth that you feel best describes your child.

I kindly ask that you do not request specific teachers; rather keep the focus of your letter to the type of learning environment and learning style that will support your child's academic and socio-emotional success.

Please ensure that I receive your input no later than Friday, April 29th for it to be considered.
