Important Upcoming Events

  • April 28 - Math SOLs (All grade levels)
  • May 30 - Memorial Day Holiday

Dear KJMS Families,

Regardless of what you call the situation we continue to find ourselves in, we are grateful at Katherine Johnson to have your continued partnership as we support students working towards academic success, making behavior changes and caring for their overall wellness.

You may have seen in the news recently that Herndon High School decided to start practicing the same Away for the Day expectations we have at KJMS. This year has been a year of adjustment, adjusting to in person learning, adjusting to mask optional, and most importantly adjusting to the ever-changing needs of our students. We are thankful that your support of Away for the Day has made that one issue that is more manageable. In the spring we traditionally see changes in behavior as the weather gets warmer. In what we call the new normal we saw those changes before spring break. Every quarter administrators review the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) with our students. This week administrators visited all PE classes and focused on recommitment to our SOAR traits.

SOAR TRAITS

Socially Responsible

Open-Minded

Accountable

Respectful

Our main focus this quarter was respect and the power of words. Often when students are asked about the inappropriate language they are using, they tell staff members they were joking or “roasting”. We made it clear to students that racist, homophobic, or sexist language has no place in our school. Please be aware the vast majority of students are extremely respectful and rarely use unkind words. We recognize that the past few years have seen a sharp increase in the use of and access to social media, and other electronic platforms. We do wonder how our students may have been impacted and as a result what they find acceptable or appropriate.

Please take a moment to find out what your students experiences at KJMS have been this year. Make sure they understand the power of words, and encourage them to find healthy ways to connect with classmates and be funny. The staff at Katherine Johnson has felt a great deal of support and partnership with the KJMS community. We want to thank you for all that you have done that has allowed us to do the work we love.

Have a wonderful weekend.

The KJMS Admin. Team

SOL Testing Information

Students at Katherine Johnson Middle School will be participating in the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests during the last quarter of the school year.  Please read the FCPS SOL website about the SOLs and the specific tests your students will be taking.

The specific testing dates for our school are:

  • Math SOLs (All grade levels) - April 28
  • Science SOLs (8th grade) - May 4 (This is the revised date)
  • Reading SOLs (7th & 8th grades) - May 12
  • SOL Make-ups - May 16 -20
  • SOL Re-takes - May 23-27

Additionally, students who fail any of their SOL tests by a narrow margin will be given the opportunity to retest with parent permission.  In order to facilitate SOL retakes we need to know ahead of time if you give your child permission to retest in the event that they score between 375-399.

Please fill out this Retest Permission Form and send it to school by May 13, 2022.  Please fill out a separate form for each student you have at Katherine Johnson MS.  A decision not to allow retesting will not impact your child’s course grade or academic record.

Please contact the school's Testing Coordinator, Griselda Mendoza, at gmendoza@fcps.edu with any questions or concerns.

FCPS Summer Learning

A reminder that FCPS Online Campus Summer Courses are open for registration and available to eligible middle school students who meet prerequisites and technical requirements.  Students may take one online course for first time or repeat credit.  Middle school students may not take a mathematics course during the summer as their first high school level mathematics course.  Courses are rigorous; therefore, students should consult their counselor prior to registering.  Program information is available at Summer Learning

En Pocas Palabras graphic

Making the move from elementary school to middle school can be both an exciting and unsettling time for a parent and student. In this week’s podcast, hear ways to ease the transition by:

  • Understanding the developmental changes in your child.
  • Getting to know middle school culture.
  • Encouraging independence, but remaining available.
  • Offering emotional support to your child.
  • Reiterating your family values and expectations.
  • Staying involved in your child’s school.

This podcast’s infomercial is about summer camps. It’s not too early to start thinking about summer fun. The FCPS Tech Adventure Camp and the Career and Technical Education Camp are taking registrations for summer 2022.
