April is Month of the Military Child
Purple Up! Day is April 20
FCPS and West Springfield High School are proud to recognize all military-connected children this April during Month of the Military Child. Each year we join our country in celebrating the resiliency of military-connected children for their tremendous service and sacrifice at home in the U.S. and overseas.
This recognition is part of the legacy of former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger who established the commemoration in 1986. During the month, one day is selected as the day to “Purple Up! For Military Students.” Everyone is encouraged to wear purple in recognition of the strength and sacrifices of military-connected youth. Why purple? Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red, and Navy blue. This year, Purple Up! Day is April 20.
At West Springfield, we have several activities planned to recognize who our military-connected students are and what life is like for them, including the following:
-
Display Map: We’ve created a display for the Month of the Military Child that visually portrays the many different locations that WSHS students have lived and moved throughout their lives. The display case is near the Main Entrance (#1).
-
Donuts with Dependents: Military parents are invited to share a donut with your child on April 20th at 7:30am at West Springfield HS, Entrance 2. If you anticipate attending, please RSVP NLT Monday, COB.
-
Purple Up! Day: Wear purple in support of our military-connected students.
-
Spirit Week: Check out the FCPS-wide spirit week activities below.

The current PTSA leadership team has resurrected our WSHS PTSA and has been leading for the past year and a half. The current group is eager to hand the reigns of leadership to a new group of officers! It is important to have a regular change in leadership every few years.
If you are interested in serving in an officer position, or would just like to know more about it, please contact the Nominating Committee at nominating@wshsptsa.net.
The PTSA is scheduled to have elections at our May membership meeting (May 10).
The PTSA awards two types of scholarships:
- Scholarship for Success for students with an IEP who have overcome obstacles; and
- Spartan Scholarship for students who have made an impact on the school community.
Applications for those scholarships are due by 8pm on Monday, May 2nd.
Note that this year we are not requiring a letter of recommendation for either scholarship, but a transcript is required for the Spartan Scholarship to verify a G.P.A. of 2.5 or above.

Spartan Performing Arts
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. Featuring a trove of cherished songs, including "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "My Favorite Things," "Do Re Mi," "Sixteeen Going on Seventeen" and the title number, The Sound of Music won the hearts of audiences worldwide, earning five Tony Awards and five Oscars. The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp, follows an ebullient postulate who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision.
