Message from Dr. Smith

Hello Bruin Families,

Thank you for the love, support, and encouragement that you have shown towards me over the past 3 years.  It has been my honor and privilege to work and learn alongside you as a school and a community.  Yesterday marked my last day at Lake Braddock, and I will always cherish the relationship that we have developed, the work we have done, and the progress that we have made.

I will be still residing in our community, so I am excited to continue to watch as our school grows and soars to new heights.  Lake Braddock has a shared vision that will guide our path, and we have incredible educators who will help to lead the way forward.  Lindsey Kearns is an exceptional leader, and I know that she will continue to provide the leadership, instructional focus, and passion for student learning that has made our school what it is today, a model school across FCPS, our state, and our nation.

Thank you again for everything, and I will always remain united with you as a Bruin!

Go Bruins!

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

Administrative Updates

During Ms. Kearns' time as Acting Principal, the following changes have occurred in our Administrative Team.

Ms. Teri Hampton, Subschool 3 Assistant Principal, will serve as Acting Associate Principal. Lake Braddock has been her home since 2001 as she has held several positions: HS Social Studies teacher, class sponsor, School Improvement Plan committee member, Assessment Coach, and currently a HS subschool assistant principal.

While Ms. Hampton is serving in this other role, Ms. Jacquie Naughton, HS Counselor, will once again serve as Acting Assistant Principal for Subschool 3.

jacquie

While Ms. Hampton is serving in this other role, Ms. Jacquie Naughton, HS Counselor, will once again serve as Acting Assistant Principal for Subschool 3. Ms. Naughton has been a Lake Braddock Bruin for the last 8 years in our High School Student Services department.  Before joining the Bruin community, Jacquie was a special education teacher and an alternative school counselor. Most recently, Jacquie was the Summer School Principal at Lake Braddock and loved being able to lead such an amazing team of Lake Braddock teachers and support staff as they helped our Bruins find success. She is most passionate about working with teachers, support staff and families to help students see their potential for success, even when the students themselves might not yet realize their potential. She is looking forward to returning to the role as the Acting Assistant Principal of Subschool 3.

ward

Congratulations to Subschool 4 Assistant Principal Ali Reeves as she will be going on maternity leave.

While she is on leave, Ms. Lorie Ward, MS English 8 Teacher, will serve as Acting Assistant Principal for Subschool 4. This is Lorie’s 14th year teaching at Lake Braddock, beginning as a career changer who became passionate about the field of education while volunteering in schools for her three children during their younger years. From there, she pursued her Alternative Route to Licensure at the UVA School of Continuing and Professional Studies, and she had the opportunity to work as an AVID Tutor at three FCPS schools before beginning her teaching position at Lake Braddock. Currently, she is the English 8 CT Leader, and she has also been enjoying the chance to help the MS After School Program with some After School Administrative Support in recent months. Lorie earned her Bachelor of Arts in English, with a Double Major in Spanish from Virginia Tech, her Juris Doctorate in Law from the University of Richmond School of Law, and her Master’s in Education Leadership from George Mason University. While she continues to enjoy making a difference in the classroom for her students, she is looking forward to the opportunity to learn and grow as a leader with her Lake Braddock colleagues.

Principal Selection Process

The Region 4 Office will begin the process to select the next principal of Lake Braddock Secondary School.  An important first step in this procedure is to inform faculty, staff, parents, and community members about the principal selection process. Therefore, all faculty, staff, parents, and community members are invited to attend an important meeting on Monday, April 25, 2022 at 6:00 p.m.  This meeting will be held virtually using Zoom.  A Zoom link will be sent the Sunday afternoon before (via eNotify) and we request that you sign in with your first and last name to help us better monitor and facilitate attendance.

As we will outline at the April 25th meeting, there are multiple levels of interviews that will take place in order to select a candidate that is the best fit and match to lead Lake Braddock Secondary School into the future.  A panel interview will be held virtually on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.  The advisory interview panel will be comprised of three staff, four parent representatives and one student representative from the Lake Braddock Secondary School community.  If you are interested in serving as a panelist, please submit your information by close of business on May 10, 2022 using the Google form linked here. The Region 4 Leadership Team will review all submissions and select staff and community members to serve as panelists or alternates for these interviews.  Individuals selected to serve in this capacity will be contacted by the FCPS Department of Human Resources which will be overseeing this process.

Another critical component to the process is your written input. We invite you to offer your individual, written input via email regarding the skills, experience, and leadership characteristics needed for Lake Braddock Secondary School. You might also address any challenges or issues that a new principal will need to address. Input is confidential and should be sent to apmcgeehan@fcps.edu.  Below you will see suggestions for input you would submit it to the Department of Human Resources by Tuesday, May 10, 2022.

e-Hallpass Information

Lake Braddock Secondary School is committed to providing our students with a safe and secure learning environment. This school year has presented us with new challenges and we have seen a need to reexamine some of our practices. Lake Braddock is conducting a small pilot of a new application called e-Hallpass with a group of our students and teachers with a plan to consider it for implementation school-wide in 2022-2023.

e-Hallpass is an online platform that allows Lake Braddock staff to issue hallway passes to students while also monitoring the activity in the school’s hallways. Students are able to access e-Hallpass through their school-issued device using any web browser. Students may request a pass to leave the classroom or an appointment with a staff member (counselor, administrator, clinic team, etc.).  Staff are able to automatically approve the passes quickly with limited impact on the instruction of the classroom. Student devices will be left in the classroom with their teacher for round trip passes or carried with the student to an appointment.

e-Hallpass allows staff to monitor hallway traffic, set limits for the number of students at specific locations, and limit hallway passes. A timer tracks how long a student is out of the classroom and can be monitored by our security team. Staff can receive alerts for students who have not checked in to their final destination or have exceeded the time limit of a pass, improving school safety and security while minimizing the disruption to learning in our classrooms.

April 20 is Purple Up! Day

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience.

To show our support, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 20 for military children

Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.

SOL Testing in May

Information regarding SOL testing at Lake Braddock can be found on our LBSS SOL Schedule and General Information page. This includes a link to the testing calendar, cell phone and electronic device policy, as well as the parent notification letters that were sent prior to Spring Break. Students must use their FCPS laptops for SOL testing; these tests cannot be taken on a personal device as per VDOE regulations. Teachers will be communicating to their students their exact room assignment as we get closer to the test dates and students will also receive an email to their school Gmail account from Ms. Bury, LBSS Assessment Coach, with their specific test date and room assignments, approximately a week before testing. It is important that students check their email for these testing notifications because, while most testing will occur on Tuesdays and Wednesday during May, some students with accommodations may test at a different time than their classmates. Please note that the bell and period schedule will change on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for testing and that information will be forthcoming soon.

SOL Expedited Retake Permission Form (Middle School only)

The Virginia Board of Education allows elementary and middle school students who fail Standards of Learning (SOL) tests by a narrow margin to retake the test before the end of the school year. Retesting is available when a student fails their first attempt with a score of 375-399 (where 400 is passing). Parent permission is required for any retests in grades 3-8. If you believe that your middle school student would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills on the SOL test, please complete this Google permission form. A decision not to allow retesting will not impact your student’s course grade or academic record.

Safe Routes to School Update

There is a lot going on this spring with Safe Routes to School at Lake Braddock!  The weather is beautiful, so more people are walking and biking!  Please be safe, and slow down when driving near our wonderful school.

Next week, both students and parents will be asked to complete google surveys (aka travel tallies) about how they get to school and what barriers might be preventing students from safely walking, biking or taking the bus to school.  This info will be used to help justify projects and studies to make the roads around our school safer and more welcoming to students and staff as they travel to school.

Thanks to all of the volunteers, administrators and county experts who have helped set up our program this year, and get funding to improve bike racks, crosswalks, speed bumps and wheelchair access in our parking lot.  We continue to look for voices and members to help reach our goal of safe, active routes to school for everyone at Lake Braddock.  Please contact LBSS.SRTS@gmail.com for info on meeting times or events.

COVID Updates and Information

For the most up-to-date information, please see the FCPS website for Return to School and COVID-19 Testing.

covid

FCPS COVID-19 Testing Ends April 22

To limit the spread of COVID-19 and to keep schools open safely, Fairfax County Public Schools has been providing a COVID-19 screening and diagnostic testing program to students and staff as part of its layered prevention strategies

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the community level for Fairfax County is currently classified as low; this classification has continued for the past month. In addition, Fairfax Health District COVID-19 Vaccination Status indicates that more than 70% of all Fairfax Health Districts residents have been fully vaccinated (defined by receiving two of a two-dose vaccine or one of a single-dose vaccine) and more than 80% have received one dose. Vaccination rates by age group indicate that more than 50% of students ages 5-11 and more than 90% of students ages 12-17 have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. COVID-19 vaccinations are free and available at various locations in our community.

Based on these metrics and CDC guidance, FCPS will discontinue the following prevention strategies on April 22:

If students have symptoms and need to get tested, the following options are available:

  • COVID-19 Testing is available at various sites throughout Fairfax County and the state.
  • At-Home Test Kits—Students leaving the school CARE Room with symptoms of illness are provided an at-home test kit.
  • Test-To-Stay Program—In partnership with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), FCPS is providing access to the Test-To-Stay program for students who have been identified as a close contact when an outbreak has been declared. This program is available to any student who meets eligibility criteria and whose parent/legal guardian has provided consent for their participation.

While we are encouraged by the continued decline in COVID-19 cases in our community, we are also committed to keeping our schools safe for all to learn and work in person. Please continue to do your part to maintain a healthy learning environment by using layered prevention strategies including hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, monitoring for illness, and staying home when sick.

  • You may not bring a cell phone/electronics into the testing room.
  • Wear comfortable, quiet shoes. You’ll surely get your steps in!

Requesting a Late AP Exam due to May 2 Eid Observance

How to Stay In Touch

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:

Attendance Lines

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Procedures for Picking Up a Student Early

  • Prior to 8:00 a.m., the student must present a note from the parent to their subschool office. Notes must include time of dismissal, reason for leaving, and a contact number. Parents of middle school students must also include the name of the person picking the student up. Please note that this person must be listed as an emergency contact. At the time of early check-out, middle school parents must come in Entrance 1 and meet their student at the security desk. Anyone picking up a middle school student must bring a photo ID with them. High school parents may pick up students outside Entrance 1.
  • Notes are strongly preferred for early check-out, but if a parent is unable to send a note with the student, the parent should call the subschool office as early as possible. All calls will be confirmed by callback to a phone number on the emergency care card. Regrettably, if the parent did not send a note with the student, the parent will be required to park, come into the school to furnish a note, and pick up the student. Without advance notice provided by a note, there may be a wait until our staff is able to locate the student, particularly if the student is at lunch or in a physical education class. We further regret that without advance notice, we are unable to accommodate requests for early dismissal after 2:15 pm.
  • In either case, students must check out at the subschool office when leaving school and check in with the security desk upon return. Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action (if returning to school, students are also subject to search). Students must contact all teachers of any class to be missed.

Read our full Attendance procedures at our website.

Late Bus Information

Late bus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Buses will pick up students in the front of the building with a departure time of approximately 4:45 pm.  Please check  StudentVue and ParentVue for your student's late bus number and stop.
