MATHCOUNTS

MathCounts

A recognized nationwide school competition where students in grade 6-8 get the opportunity to compete in live contests against and alongside their peers. A rigorous selection process was conducted among the GBW MathClub enrolled students (5th & 6th graders), and a team of 12 Mathletes from 6th grade were selected to compete at the Fairfax Chapter.

We are happy to let you know that GBW Mathletes had a great performance at the 2022 Fairfax Chapter level competing with Middle Schoolers, and few of these Mathletes have performed incredibly well and will be moving on to participate in the State Level competition on March 31.

Outstanding achievements from this year’s MathCounts:

  • Nathan Park - Ranks in the top 25% in the Fairfax Chapter!

Mathletes from 6th grade advancing to the State round to compete individually:

  • Nathan Park
  • Prajeet Mishra
  • Siddharth Surapaneni

This GBW MathCounts team was coached by Amruta Rajeev & Supreet Mishra. 6th grade team was also coached by Suhas and Shreyas for other Math Competitions.

Few of these coaches are GBW Alumni & current TJHSST/Chantilly High School students and it is their way of giving back to the community by helping GBW.

Science Olympiad

Science

Science Olympiad is a school's team based competition for students from third grade through their senior year in high school. It offers students the opportunity to work in teams of 2 or 3 towards a STEM topic to demonstrate the knowledge and build device per the defined rules. This helps students to improve their understanding in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to work together in teams to learn new skills. Virginia Science Olympiad (VASO) is a non-profit organization engaging and challenging students in these disciplines through team-based competitive tournaments in Virginia.

GBW's team with 15 students (from 5th & 6th grades) competed in the Division B (Middle School Division) of Regional Science Olympiad, which was conducted on January 22nd (Written events) and February 12th (Building events). The GBW team was built in a very short time and the team's performance was remarkable as they were one place away from qualifying for the VASO State Championship. GBW was placed 13th overall of the 30 teams, the majority of them being the Middle school teams.
